A new Canadian carrier is getting ready to launch the iPhone 3G and 3GS. Virgin Mobile Canada announced that Apple’s smartphones are on their way and consumers will be able to get them in the following months. The carrier’s position is official and the short press release that you can find at the read link below shows that Virgin Mobile Canada is going to undoubtedly sell the iPhones in the near future. What the company fails to mention are prices and actual arrival dates so we’ll be waiting for a longer press release from Virgin Mobile Canada in the following months.

I am amazed at all the new uses for augmented reality, especially those that make their appearances on iPhone apps such as Layar. There is now another augreal app with the Car Finder. (By the way, augreal is just an abbreviation that I just made up for Augmented Reality. I’m hoping it will catch on.)

Car Finder relies on an iPhone 3GS camera and digital compass in order to “overlay the direction of your car and how far away it is”. So now you have a way of remembering where you park. It is available at the App Store for about $0.99.

Before you read on please make note that this is only a rumor and has not been confirmed in any way shape or form — BGR brings us news that AT&T and Apple are pondering whether or not to launch an 8GB iPhone 3GS for $99 that would be presumably replace the current $99 iPhone 3G.

Like I said, there isn’t very much evidence to back this up but if this goes down it would reportedly be a move to combat the DROID handsets popping up on Verizon.

Now, it’s not everyday you see parts from an unannounced device go on sale but China Ontrade has what they are calling the iPhone 4 Generation Midboard.

Normally you could be quick to brush off such a seemingly obvious rumor but according to Gizmodo, China Ontrade had parts that on sale that were then used in the iPhone 3GS.

So, could this possibly be real? We’ll have to wait and find out.

Zgrip iPhone Pro for steady iPhone 3GS shots

For those that like to shoot video with the iPhone 3GS, this professional video grip could be what you’re looking for. This video stabilizer could be a “steadycam” for the iPhone, as there is far too much side movement when shooting on an iPhone 3GS in trying to hold it steady. The Zgrip iPhone Pro Z-ZG-IP is available at the Zaguto store for $295.00.

  • Augmented reality is a wonderful thing, and Layar has figured out another use for it: tracking government bailout money. Yes, this new app for Android and iPhone 3GS allows a user to view recovery.gov contract dollars where they are actually being used. As you can see, there are a gratuitous amounts of blue circles around Washington D.C.. My my my, isn’t that just sad.

ARider uses iPhone 3GS for realtime maps

The ARider, created by Ubiquitous Entertainment, uses a head-mounted display, a bike helmet, and the iPhone 3GS to create a real-time map for bikers. Apparently, it takes advantage of the iPhone’s compass, and it can also be used for hands-free calls and connecting to Twitter using TwitBird Pro. It looks like it works well, but do you want to wear an iPhone on your helmet?

  • We did tell you a little while ago that both Bell and Telus are getting ready to launch the iPhone 3GS in Canada. Those of you that refused to get an iPhone from Rogers can choose one now from Bell or Telus.

And Bell decided to make things even more obvious by launching an iPhone 3GS-dedicated webpage. You can sign up to get more details about the iPhone 3GS launch by following the link below. In other words, Bell hasn’t specified any prices or release dates but it simply confirmed the fact that the iPhone 3GS is coming to its brand new HSPA network.

  • Orange UK has just announced their intentions to carry Apple’s fabled iPhone 3G and 3GS at some point later this year. It seems that O2’s iPhone exclusivity deal has reached its end and marks the second carrier in the UK to officially carry the handset.

From this announcement you can expect to see a price war of sorts as Orange UK and O2 battle it out to see who can give consumers the most wallet-friendly iPhone experience.

This is definitely not a joke and the number is real. An AT&T customer decided to break the world record for sending SMS messages and he has apparently done so successfully. Using an iPhone 3GS he managed to send 662,258 SMS messages in one month. You do the math, and if you end up with about 15 texts/minute (that’s without sleeping), then you should be about right. Don’t you get bored sending all those messages? Do you have time to do anything else during the day? Or maybe all these messages are one-word texts in which case it sounds a little easier to be accomplished. Or should we assume it’s all fake?

But the best part comes now! AT&T printed the bill and sent it over to the guy. That’s 12,301 printed pages in three boxes. I bet some AT&T employees were at least a bit annoyed with this particular bill!

  • Have you been hit hard by the recession but managed to hang onto your beloved iPhone? Well then you should check out Case-mate’s recently launched iPhone 3G/3GS recession case, pictured above.

As you can see, this case is nothing more than card board box fashioned to perfectly fit your iPhone with holes cut out for the silence, volume and hold buttons, in addition to the camera.

What’s even better is you can opt for a saying on the back of the case that will be written by Case-mate in Sharpie. Honestly though, priced at just $0.99, how can you go wrong?

If you didn’t know, the Qik iPhone 3GS application has been available for some time now and lets you view and upload videos taken with your phone to a number of different places. Another feature found in the software is the ability to stream content that your friends have uploaded. However, that feature was previously only available over WiFi.

Today, however, the app has been updated, unlocking the ability to stream video using nothing more than a 3G connection. We’ll have to see how AT&T takes to this one.

What you see above is a reportedly leaked document from Rogers that gives us a hint of what is to come of the iPhone 3G. As you can see, Rogers is apparantly gearing up to launch an 8GB iPhone 3GS that will most likely sell for a great dell less than the 16GB model, like as in a $99 price point.

But why would they do this? Well, buzz suggests that Apple will launch the 8GB iPhone 3GS to replace the dated iPhone 3G that currently sells for $99. We’ll keep you posted once an official announcement happens.

The Onion is at it again this time giving us a look at the iPhone 3GI a phone that can only be seen by “the most special Apple consumers”. This could lead one to believe the I in 3GI stands for invisible, or perhaps imaginary?

The iPhone 3GI will apparantly feature “significant hardware and software upgrades” and “superior processoing speeds”. This added to the fact that it’s as light as air and so thin that it’s almost not even there and you have yourself a worthy iPhone 3GS successor.

The iPhone 3GI will reportedly retail for the low low price of $599.

Yes people, this is a joke and yes, it’s making fun of Apple Fanboys.

The iPhone 3GS is now available in Italy and the carrier bringing it you is 3 Italy. The 16GB iPhone 3GS will cost you just €99 or around $140 while the 32GB version will cost you €199 or around $280 if purchased with a new contract. If you don’t want a new plan you get to choose between three different pre-paid plans and you can even get the phones off contract for €599 and €699.

If you want the old iPhone 3G, that’s available too and you’ll get it free of charge with any new plan.

I know a guy that would install Windows 95 on any computer he’d ever use. In his world, that’s the best OS available. Not that I have anything against Windows 95 but that OS should better rest in peace. And it shouldn’t be in any case installed on an iPhone!

The iPhone 3G above has been jail-broken and someone installed Windows 95 on it. Just to prove that you definitely shouldn’t run Win 95 on your iPhone you should know that boot time alone takes about 5 to 10 minutes. Imagine trying to make things run on such a phone. But don’t let me bore you to death with simple words when the video above has all the hot stuff.

Coming up next is running Windows XP on the iPhone 3GS. We’ll be waiting for this gruesome combo too!

    Diamond Rose Gold iPhone 3GS

The iPhone 3GS has been out for almost a month now and we already have the first gold version of it. The Diamond Rose Gold iPhone 3GS is a 18 carat solid rose gold phone designed entirely by hand. Four craftsman have been working on it in Liverpool, UK and I must say that another masterpiece has been created. Sure the average Joe will rather buy a house, instead of paying £21,995 for a phone, but this handset is marvelous. Besides the regular iPhone 3GS features, this baby comes with 150 added grams of solid rose gold and 53 pink diamonds. What’s not to like about it except for the price? Oh and just in case you do buy this iPhone 3GS, make sure you also invest some of your money in a MobileMe account. Just in case the phone gets lost or stolen!

Despite purplera1n’s release not too long ago, the iPhone Dev Team has gone ahead and released their own version of an iPhone 3GS jailbreak entitled redsn0w.

Redsn0w 0.8 is reportedly “a stable jailbreak (unlike purplera1n)” so users who were having problems with GeoHot’s jailbreak might want to check this one out.

You can head over to the iPhone Download Blog for a tutorial on how to use redsn0w. Remember, proceed at your own risk.

It seems a user by the name of vofffka got their hands on what they are calling a prototype version of an iPhone 3GS. How do they know it’s a prototype? Well, when they connect it to iTunes it says “iPhone can not be restored, because software for this iPhone is not available yet”.

Not only that but it also has E10633 engraved on the front. Before you go and place a bid, this phone doesn’t work and the eBay user has doubts it will ever work.

However, if you’re a nifty iPhone hacker maybe you can pull a few strings and get yourself a cheap iPhone 3GS?

Normally, an iPhone jailbreak doesn’t hit the scene until the Dev Team deems it appropriate. They even went so far as to delay the release of an iPhone 3GS jailbreak due to fear that Apple would discover and fix the hole they used. Well, it seems that an iPhone hacker by the name of GeoHot got sick of waiting for the Dev Team to release it and went ahead and released what he is calling ‘purplera1n’:

Normally I don’t make tools for the general public, and rather wait for the dev team to do it. But guys, whats up with waiting until 3.1? That isn’t how the game is played. We release, Apple fixes, we find new holes. It isn’t worth waiting because you might have the “last” hole in the iPhone. What last hole…this isn’t golf. I’ll find a new one next week.

GeoHot says that all you need to do is download the purplera1n file at www.purplera1n.com on a Windows (not 7) PC, run the file, connect your iPhone to iTunes, click “make it ra1n”, then “on bootup, run Freeze, the purplera1n installer app”.

Of course, this jailbreak is in its beta form so make sure you backup everything and do all of this at your own risk.
