White Space is a term used in telecommunications used to describe frequencies that should be used for broadcasting although but not used anymore. So guess what happened after everyone was forced to switch to digital TV? A bunch of frequencies out there were turned into white space so we should see plenty of networks use the freed up bands in the near future.

The first white space network is currently running in an experimental stage in Claudville, Virginia. The town’s school and computer center were equipped by Dell, Microsoft and the TDF Foundation but we have no white space network performance reports yet. Hopefully everything goes well so other similar rural areas can upgrade their current Internet connections.

  • You’ve gotta love Finland. The country is probably the first one ready to guarantee 1Mbps broadband Internet connectivity to its citizens. That’s an impressive move coming from the Finnish government which should definitely be followed by others. Broadband access will become a human right at some point next year and in 2015 Finland is preparing to raise that number to 100Mbps. That means that Finland’s Internet infrastructure is definitely going to grow with the government supporting its development. So what do you say folks? Are you ready to move to Finland for a while?

  • What you see above is Rogers‘ recently unveiled Rocket Hub 3G modem marketed for use in the home. In other words, this is the perfect solution for Canadian’s living in the boonies who can’t find an ISP but still get a cellphone reception.

The Rocket Hub features 7.2Mbps HSPA in addition to supporting WiFi and ethernet out. Rogers will also give you the ability to make voice calls over UMTS, a nice touch.

This device will go on sale sometime later this month for a currently unknown price with plans starting right around $35 Canadian.

This was bound to happen sooner or later so we should be happy it happened a lot sooner than expected. Nokia has announced its first LTE Modem. The RD-3 is going to offer support for GSM/EDGE, WCDMA/HSPA and LTE bands so it will certainly be useful no matter what network you decide to use. We have no idea when and where this first Nokia LTE Internet modem will be available but it’s good to know Nokia is getting ready for the immediate future. Samsung, where’s your LTE modem?

  • Since we keep talking about tablets these days, let’s shift our attention to a new tablet-like device spotted at the FCC. This one is made by Nokia and it’s headed to the USA via T-Mobile. The FCC gave its thumb up on a Nokia RX-51 device which is not a phone. The documentation reveals AWS 3G support which is a clear indication that T-Mobile USA is the carrier that’s going to launch it. Nokia hasn’t launched the device just yet so we’ll have plenty of time for more speculation in the following weeks. What do you think this device is all about?

  • Are you happy with your broadband Internet provider? Would you switch to broadband over power lines if it was available? Well it looks like there’s an IEEE working group that has completed the main development of the standard and it has released the first draft of technical specs. That doesn’t mean you’re going to get broadband over power lines soon but it’s good to know we’re getting somewhere on this matter.

Jean-Philippe Faure, chair of IEEE P1901 Working Group said:

This is a major milestone. Main development is completed and finalization now starts through successive rounds of circulations for vote and comment.

When completed, the IEEE P1901 will offer you bandwidth speeds greater than 100Mb/s but like I said, we have no specific dates so far.

  • Mozilla is hard at work on Firefox 4.0 and have today taken the time to show us a mockup screen shot of the browser’s new interface.

Does the interface look familiar? It should as it bares an uncanny resemblance to that of Google’s Chrome. I’m not complaining as I’ve become quite the fan of Chrome’s interface but Mozilla seems a bit unsure.

Below is a list of positives and negatives of the new UI compiled by Mozilla:

    Positives:
    - Save Vertical Space
    - Efficiency/Remove Visual Complexity – Right now the tabs have to be connected to something. So we are adding an extra visual element for them to connect to.
    - Shorter Mouse Distance to Page Controls.
    Negatives:
    - Breaks Consistency/Familiarity – Moving things confuses existing users.
    - Title is MIA – With the space removed from the titlebar you only get the truncated version in the tab.
    - Longer Mouse Distance to Tabs – Takes longer to mouse to a tab.
    - Lost Space – Sandwiched in between the application icon and the window widgets you lose some space.

So, readers, what are you opinions on Firefox’s new look? Good? Bad? Leave it in the comments.

In-flight WiFi is more and more popular. Surfing the web while flying to your favorite destination is a great way to pass the time. And U.S. Airways has just decided to offer the services starting next year. The airliner has partnered up with Aircell to offer GoGo Inflight Internet service to its domestic A321 customers. GoGo Internet will be available sometime early next year and everyone willing to pay anywhere from $5.95 to $12.95 for it will be able to go online from their smartphone or laptop.

    CrunchPad Tablet to Arrive Soon?

You must have heard about Michael Arrington’s CrunchPad web tablet concept by now. Well then you should also know that the device is said to arrive really soon. According to various sources the CrunchPad is expected to be available “as soon as possible” and an official release should occur sometime in July or August.

The CrunchPad will cost around $300 but will you pay that much for just a web-oriented device? That’s right, the CrunchPad will only get you Internet access! There’s no internal hard drive and there’s no Windows support. It’s not a netbook tablet but an Internet tablet that boots straight to its WebKit browser. The device will offer you a 12-inch touchscreen, Flash support, an Atom processor and support for a physical keyboard.

The CrunchPad might just be the gadget we’ve been waiting for. Unfortunately it will be quite useless when there’s no Internet support, wouldn’t you say?

For those of you unaware of the Pirate Party, then let me present it to you. The Pirate Party is a real party in Sweden, founded in 2006, and it tries to offer a different view on copyright, patents, privacy online and in day to day life and transparency. Since 2006 it grew more and more and now it has scored a really impressive victory in the European Union parliament elections. The party gained 7.1% of the Swedish votes which translate into at least one seat in the future European parliament and possibly one more.

Pirate Party leader Rick Falkvinge had this to say about the outcome:

We’ve felt the wind blow in our sails. We’ve seen the polls prior to the election. But to stand here, today, and see the figures coming up on that screen… What do you want me to say? I’ll say anything

Together, we have today changed the landscape of European politics. No matter how this night ends, we have changed it. This feels wonderful. The citizens have understood it’s time to make a difference. The older politicians have taken apart young peoples’ lifestyle, bit by bit. We do not accept that the authorities’ mass-surveillance.

How will a couple of voices influence current worldwide political trends? How will that influence the European policy on downloads and privacy? We will just have to wait and see.

  • It looks like Comcast will not die without a fight. Although a little late, the company seems ready to match Cablevision’s 100Mbps ultra-fast Internet offer. The new product is supposed to be launched soon and it will be similar to Cablevision’s 101Mbps Ultra speed offer. Comcast customers should expect download speeds of up to 100Mbps and upload speeds of up to 40Mbps. How much will the new service cost? Considering that Comcast is currently charging $190 per month for 50Mbps downlink and 20Mbps uplink, should we expect it to doubld the price? Let’s not forget that Optimum Ultra will cost you only $99 so Comcast should also find a way to match the new price tags.

  • Virgin Media might hold the keys to the future of the Internet. The company is testing 200Mbps speeds which include full HD and 3D broadband content. What will the new modems look like and when should we expect them to be released? Unfortunately for the next six months this DOCSIS 3.0 project will be tested only around Ashford, Kent by around 100 “lead adopters”. Anyone close to that location? We won’t mind should you keep us posted on the whole 200Mbps testing.

Now here’s an idea: T-Mobile UK has recently announced the addition of a “Pay Once” option for those interested in buying the Blackberry Pearl 8110.

If you choose this deal, you’ll pay a one time fee of £180/$262 and get a brand new Blackberry Pearl 8110 complete with unlimited internet and email for a year. Sounds cool, right?

The only problem is that there aren’t any minutes bundled with the “Pay Once” deal so you’re forced to deal with a pay-as-you-go method of obtaining minutes. Oh well, can’t win ‘em all!

Australia’s Prime Minister Kevin Rudd made his “single biggest infrastructure decision” according to him, when he decided to allocate a total of A$43 billion for the creation of a nationwide high speed broadband network. When everything will be finished, about 90% of homes and businesses will get up to 100Mbps speeds via a fiber optic connection, while everyone else should cope with only 12 Mbps from a wireless/satellite connection.

49% of that impressive amount will come from the private sector, while the government will only invest A$4.7 billion initially with A$20 billion coming from a national infrastructure fund and the future sale of bonds. The project will be finished in 7 or 8 years so you might just have to wait a few years to have your Internet connection bumped up to better speeds.

How would you like to browse the internet on your Kindle 2 through a USB network? Well it seems there’s a way of doing that. Simply use some of the debugging commands available and follow the link below for a complete unofficial tutorial. Remember that it’s not an official tutorial and you will be doing all the modifications on your own risk. Those faint of hear should not try this at home. Especially since Amazon might not like all this playing around with its hardware and firmware.

T-Mobile has a young 3G network in the USA, that’s why it just about now that the company is getting ready to launch its first 3G USB modem ever. That’s the webConnect USB Laptop Stick which will arrive on March 25th. It will cost $59.99 per month for 3G, EDGE and HotSpot connectivity and it will have a 5GB data traffic limit. The USB modem will be available only to T-Mobile customers. But since T-Mobile’s 3G network is way too limited you might not want to buy it just yet, especially if you’re traveling a lot.
