  • In a move that will really allow them to expand possibilities and features for the iPhone and the iPod Touch, Apple is reportedly set to manufacture its own microchips, a strategy shift that the company hopes will create exclusive features for its gadgets and shield Apple’s work from rivals.

The iPhone now uses chips from a variety of suppliers including Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, Broadcom Corp, Marvell Technology Inc, CSR Plc and Infineon Technologies AG, analysts say. If Apple succeeds in coming up with its own chip, it could potentially dislodge at least one of these companies from the iPhone, while sending notice of its intent to take an even bigger role in the creation of its products.

Apple could use the internally developed chips to sharply reduce the power consumption of its hit iPhone and iPod touch devices, and possibly add graphics circuitry to help its hardware play realistic game software and high-definition videos.

  • Gateway has unveiled two new notebooks in the market, the UC and the MD Series. The 15.6-inch MD Series brings in the style and capabilities of Gateway’s already popular MC Series, while focusing more on digital media. The UC Series is the company’s first notebook with a 13.3-inch widescreen display, making for a pleasantly portable design.

“These notebooks are incredibly different in terms of style and form factor, yet they both include best-in-class technology at incredible values. The entertainment and multimedia capabilities of the MD Series and the all-around mobility of the UC Series make them perfect for today’s savvy customers who know what they’re looking for in a new notebook,” Sawall said.

    MD Series
The MD Series is more entertainment driven, including advanced video and audio options. It features High-Definition (HD) 16:9 aspect ratio and a 1366×768 display that allows for high-resolution and crisp, clear, video and image viewing. It also features a HDMI v1.3 media connection that lets you connect both your audio and video through the same connection—allowing for clearer image and sound.

This series is also budget-friendly, with a base price of $649.99 and various additional options for increased performance.

    UC Series
Gateway’s UC Series also has its perks. The notebook weighs in at just 5.3 lbs. yet still offers high performance and enough features to please most users out there.

The UC Series is a bit more expensive than the MD Series, with prices starting at $749.99.
