  • Acer Aspire One AOD150 Laptop

Here is another flashy netbook option for people who want mobile solutions within their grasps. Offered by Acer, the Acer Aspire One AOD150 is not too flashy and not too dull. It has a good number of features, and it also has the best screen we have ever seen in a netbook, so it gets by on much more than just its good looks.

It’s a 10.2in netbook with a fully featured keyboard. The keys are smaller keys than the ones found on the ASUS Eee PC S101, which means that the Acer is not as wide as the Eee PC. This makes it uncomfortable to type on for long periods of time, but eventually you get used to it. Touch-typists will have no problem using the keyboard as it has a regular QWERTY layout and large shift keys on both the left and right sides.

The Acer Aspire One AOD150 differs a little in layout to the 8.9in Aspire One ZG5, but it’s not a complete overhaul of the original design; it still retains much of the original’s look and feel. The touchpad’s left- and right-click buttons are now located at the bottom of the touchpad, rather than either side of it; it has a teardrop-shaped hinge detail, rather than a circle; and it only has one SD slot, rather than two. In the original Linux-based Aspire One, the second SD slot was used to supplement the solid-state drive in the unit.

There is a 160GB, 4200rpm hard drive in the Acer Aspire One AOD150, which is a massive step up from the 8GB solid-state drive found in the original Aspire One. The configuration of the Acer Aspire One AOD150 also includes a 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU, 1GB of RAM and Intel GMA950 graphics.

The unit looks great and feels good. It doesn’t get overly warm, so it probably won’t be uncomfortable after long periods of use on your lap. The touchpad feels smooth and is accurate, but we wish there was a physical distinction between the two buttons.

  • MSI GT627 Entry Level Laptop

MSI is a great brand to consider if you are on the lookout for a great and affordable laptop oozing with power today. Though the keyboard and screens leave a lot of room for improvement, if you are looking for a power bundle laptop in the market today, this is something worth checking out.

    Features:

    • Intel Core 2 Duo processor (up to 15% overclocking)
    • Up to 4GB DDR3 RAM
    • 320GB SATA hard drive
    • NVIDIA 9800M GS graphics card
    • 15.4″ display at 1,680 x 1,050 resolution
    • Optional Blu-ray drive
    • 6-cell battery

Micro-Star International made its first big push into the U.S. market with its Wind U100 netbook. Now it’s targeting the entry-level gaming laptop market with the GT627. But while the hardware specs look good on paper and provide a good deal of power, a couple of design and build issues severely limit the system’s appeal.

Priced to move at $1150, the GT627 is housed in an understated black aluminum case. A bit of red trim around the edges adds color, but a chrome grille above the keyboard is the only overt sign that this is a gaming laptop. In fact, the GT627 could easily pass for a stylish business notebook.

  • Lenovo IdeaPad S10e Notebook

Lenovo announces a new kind of notebook in the Lenovo IdeaPad S10es. It is a 10 inch netbook that boasts of 250 x 183 x 28mm dimension and tips the scales at 1.1kg, placing it squarely amongst the rest of the 10in brigade.

The build quality and aesthetics evoke the more endearing traits of Lenovo’s legendary ThinkPad range, too. Its looks are, for instance, typically plain, but that’s no bad thing. The matte black lid sports a chunky silver Lenovo logo but otherwise there’s very little attempt at injecting any sense of style.

Cast your gaze around the rest of the chassis and it’s enlivened only by the traditional ThinkPad red and green 3.5mm audio sockets. Looks might not be everything but set the IdeaPad S10e next to the Samsung NC10 and, if a laptop could blush, the Lenovo’s cheeks would be ruby red.

    Features:

  • Intel Atom N270 processor
  • 1GB of memory
  • 160GB hard drive
  • Wireless connectivity of 802.11g and Bluetooth
  • Price: £256

  • SimpleTech has improved their catalog of external hard-drives by introducing two new products: a Pro Drive with 1.5TB, and a Duo Pro Drive with 3TB. Can this big amount of storage capacity be used for personal stuff? Maybe if the person behind the computer makes video collections, maybe not…

Anyway, both drives have 4 possible connection modes: FireWire 800, FireWire 400, the usual USB 2.0, and the fast eSATA that is able make transfers at 3Gb per second. A good add-on to the Pro and Duo Pro Drives is the offer of (free) online storage, with a maximum capacity of 2GB.

toshiba-250gb-sata-disk While the size of the hard drive may not be very significant, it’s the physical dimensions that attract attention: Toshiba has announced a 1.8 inch 250GB hard drive that spins at 5400 rpm. Even more interesting is that it features SATA support, offering up to 3Gbps bandwidth for disk intensive applications.

The 8mm thick drive will surely make its way to ultra portable laptops, and will also replace a similar 240GB 1.8 inch hard drive that was announced some time ago, though it was stuck with a slower PATA interface suitable only for portable media players.

The drive hits mass production in November and will be part of the MKxx29GSG series.

And apparently a TIPA Award is quite a big thing in Europe. TIPA is composed of 30 independent publications from 13 European countries. Those publications are completely neutral as they don’t have any relationship with manufacturers. TIPA Awards are given for photo, video and digital products.
