The video-out feature of iPhone 2.2 isn’t that secret anymore and it looks like it’s working. Sure you’d have to break some of Apple’s rules and iPhone SDK to uncover its mysteries but that’s just one of those sacrifices you’ll have to make. The Moto Chaser game in the video here is being displayed on a TV thanks to Ars Technica’s and Freeverse’s efforts to make that video-out feature work. It seems that the whole thing works in landscape mode only for now and it slows down all processors besides the faster one on the iPod touch second generation. So who knows what an iPhone will be able to do once Apple further exploits the video-out thing. Imagine adding a display and somekind of keyboard and you’ll end up with the smallest computer in the world!

It took the iPhone Dev Tream only a couple of days to break the new iPhone 2.2 firmware but I guess they have gotten used to doing that already. You can get your version today. Go for QuickPwn if you have a Windows PC or choose the new Pwnage Tool for Macs.
The iPhone Dev Team said they did break the beta 2.2 which means breaking the final version must have been a walk in the park. As always make sure you know what you’re doing when jailbreaking your iPhone and back up everything that needs to be backed up first.

Is it just me or you happen to notice the coincidence too. Apple’s new firmware has just been released, just when the Storm got out. Well we all knew that the Storm is coming but we also knew the new firmware is getting here. Just go to iTunes and do your thing. Be prepared to wait a while as this firmware is slightly bigger than the previous one at 246.4MB.
You should be curious as to what Apple has included in this one. Here’s a list of features, some more useful than others:
- Google Street View in Google Maps
- Public transit and walking directions in Google Maps
- Display the address of a place when you drop a pin
- Share your location via email
- A fix for a scheduled fetching of email bug
- Improved stability and performance of Safari
- Podcasts can be downloaded right to the iPhone over WiFi or 3G
- A decrease in call failures/dropped-calls
- Improved sound quality of visual voicemail messages
- The ability to return to the main home iPhone screen with the click of the home button
- The ability to turn on and off the keyboard auto-correction feature
Sure you will find none of the things you actually wanted: copy paste, no MMS, although others are doing it. No voice dialing, no Flash support and no Push Notification and no GPS turn-by-turn directions.
Need I say more? Now let’s focus on the big release happening today. The Storm is coming!

iPhone and iPod touch users are certainly waiting for the next firmware version. We know 2.2 is coming and we know it doesn’t bring any of the things we would have wanted. What we have now are new App Store screenshots. You can sort now the apps by the top paid, top free and release date. Besides that you can browse the application by screenshots and you have an icon beside each application instead of a text link. Want more? Check the shots around here!

Version 2.2 beta 2 of the iPhone firmware we’ve grown to hate is ready for developers. It looks like just yesterday we were talking about version 2.1, doesn’t it? Not much has changed! There’s no copy paste, no email typing in landscape mode, no MMS and no push notifications for third party applications.
What’s new now is the Google Maps with street view. That’s not something I would actually want to do while using the iPhone’s GPS support. But I would like to copy paste stuff! Maybe some developers will put this firmware to good use and come up with some apps to deal with the issues mentioned above.

It was only a couple of weeks ago that we have seen iPhone firmware 2.1 officially launched and Apple seems ready to be moving on. The next version is the 2.2 and there’s a beta 1 available for developers. What are we going to get from the new version? We don’t exactly know, but since Apple is moving so fast we should expect some decent changes to emerge. Background push notification anyone?
