Next Tuesday Sony Ericsson is going to launch its first Android device, the Xperia X3 aka Rachael. Although most people are busy pre-ordering the Droid from Verizon, they should really stop and see what this Rachael phone is all about. The teaser above has been officially leaked and the handset looks pretty interesting. Sure 20 seconds of video featuring a turned-off device isn’t enough for us, is it? But at least we know the Rachael looks better than expected. All we need now are some decent specs and a matching personality and we might just have a Droid competitor on our hands!

Remember the Aino cellphone that we mentioned a few months ago, on May? The good news is that Sony Ericsson announced that the device is now available for purchase, unlocked, with a price tag of $600.
The Aino is compatible with AT&T and in terms of technical features it boasts quad-band GSM/EDGE and tri-band UMTS/HSPA 850/1900/2100.
In case you forgot the specifications of the Aino, it comes with a 3-inch touchscreen, a 8.1-megapixel camera, GPS, and Sony Remote Play among other good details.

There’s good news for everyone charging their phones in Europe. It looks like there’s a phone charging standard coming to all those European handset owners. The European Commission has received today confirmation for that micro-USB charging socket from the most important names in the mobile business. Nokia, Sony, Ericsson, Motorola, Apple, LG, NEC, Qualcomm, RIM, Samsung and Texas Instruments are all going to play ball and we should expect them to launch devices ready to be charged via a micro-USB charger sometime next year. On the long run the micro-UBS standard could be adopted by other markets too since CTIA, OMTP and the GSM Association also support it. Can’t wait for the day when I won’t hate myself for forgetting a certain phone charger! What are your thoughts on this?

Not long ago we told you how people say Ericsson is interested in leaving Sony for good and Sony is trying to come up with the funds required to buyout its partner. It looks like that was all a rumor as s Ericsson isn’t going anywhere. A new report from Dow Jones is confirming that Ericsson “has no plans to abandon its joint venture Sony Ericsson.” I guess we don’t need more confirmation than that. Although Sony might indeed be thinking differently about the whole issue.

Last year we’ve heard various rumors saying that Sony and Ericsson will part ways. That hasn’t happened yet but it looks like something will definitely going to change. Ericsson wants out of the cell phone business and Sony if fine with it. In fact Sony will buy Ericsson’s share and continue on its own. So how do you like this new rumor? No official statements have been made yet so we’re still looking for confirmation for this one.

Sony Ericsson’s Idou is a 12 megapixel camera phone which might make an impression once it arrives. The handset will be a great tool for both mobile entertainment and fast communication and it looks like Sony Ericsson has prepared a Stylus which seems destined to go with the handset. Sony Ericsson hasn’t made it clear if the stylus will be bundled with the Idou or if you will have to get it separately. But it’s good to know that we’ll have an alternative to our fingers to control this device.

Sony Ericsson has announced the C903 Cyber-Shot camera phone and I must say that we were expecting this one to arrive. And this phone is so much closer to a camera than other Cyber-Shots before him. Let’s take a look at the camera specs first:
Sure you’ll say a 5 megapixel camera is way too little compared with Samsung’s 8 megapixel phones but it has plenty of features which will improve your pictures on the go.
Interested in the capabilities of the C903? Well here they are:
The phone should arrive in the Q2 so make sure you start saving some money for it. We don’t know what carrier will pick it up yet and we have no idea about prices, but there’s plenty of time for that.

2008 hasn’t been a great year for various companies and especially Sony Ericsson. The company reported a loss of 187 million Euro for the last quarter of the past year which means that overall Sony Ericsson lost 73 million euro in 2008. Sony Ericsson sold 24.2 million handsets in the Q4 and 96.6 million overall compared to 103.4 million handsets sold in 2007.
Sony Ericsson’s President, Dick Komiyama, said:
In economic terms, 2008 has been a tumultuous year with world markets experiencing a serious downturn. The mobile phone market has been greatly affected by this and as expected, the fourth quarter continued to be very challenging for Sony Ericsson. Our business alignment is progressing as planned, with the full effect of annual savings of around Euro 300 million expected by the second half of 2009. We foresee a continued deterioration in the market place in 2009, particularly in the first half.
Will the company manage to stay afloat? Are we to expect a flagship phone to revive its business? So far we know that a PSP Phone will not arrive this year but a secret Android phone will be launched. We have no details about it and there are no leaks yet. What is certain is that Sony Ericsson confirmed again once again its interest in the Android platform. We’ll be close by when the first Sony Ericsson Android handset will be announced.

TeliaSonera is said to develop the first commercial 4G wireless networks. The carrier has Ericsson and Huawei ready to deploy it in Stockholm and Oslo.
Lars Klasson, CTO and Vice President of TeliaSonera said:
We have chosen Ericsson to deliver the initial 4G city network in Stockholm and Huawei for the initial 4G city network in Oslo. Now, TeliaSonera continues the evaluation of suppliers to deliver 4G networks in the Nordic and Baltic countries.
The project will launch officially in 2010. Hopefully by then we’re going to have other carriers ready to deploy 4G networks in other countries too. And while we’re at it some of them should really improve their 3G networks before getting to the next level.

The last Walkman phone Sony Ericsson has launched is the W715. And, as expected, this Walkman will be just a little better than its predecessors. Besides delivering your favorite music while you’re on the go, it will also offer you GPS support which means you will be able to make the most of the services available near you. Vodafone is going to pick the W715 and it will offer you turn-by-turn pedestrian or driving navigation with Vodafone Find&Go.
As for music, the W715 will come with the same features as the W980 has. You should expect crystal clear sound, the TrackID and SenseMe applications. The Shake Control function is also there which means you can change tracks with a twist of the wrist. And Vodafone Music is also going to be present.
You should expect the phone to arrive from Vodafone and other markets in Q1 but specific arrival dates and prices are going to be announced at a later date. The phone will come in those fancy named colors I like: Galactic Black and Luxury Silver. And here’s what we’re going to find inside of a W715 Walkman:

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 was probably one of the most expected cell phones from Sony but we always got mixed news about it. It looks that the X1a won’t spare us either. The phone was supposed to be shipped starting today, December 8th. That didn’t happen yet and it looks like the X1a will not arrive until January 9th. SonyStyle.com seems to have January 12th as a shipping date. Who are we to believe then? More importantly, what phone would you choose instead for Christmas?

Sony Ericsson is said to announce the Rika tomorrow. Rumors say this W705 Walkman model is scheduled for a November 6th release. Here’s what the Rika will feature:

Sony Ericsson admitted that they lost around £19.4 million in Q3 of 2008. They are the first handset vendor to admit to having taken a clobbering this year. It’s partly due to its reliance on Europe but more on a severe decrease in the Average Selling Price (ASP) for handsets. SE, however, predicted that its Walkman brand would help shore up sales but the C902 Cybershot camera-phone is the surprise hit model of the quarter. The company also is due to launch Playnow with Telenor in Sweden during Q4 2008 with a special edition of the with Playnow built-in. It has also introduced three new Walkman phones including its first models with integrated Youtube support (W595, W902, G705).
Despite this terrible news, SE still managed to ship 25.7 million units in Q3 2008 and says its market share remains about flat at eight per cent. That will keep it in the number five slot unless Motorola does even worse. Sony Ericsson forecasts that the global handset market for 2008 will grow at a rate of around 10 per cent from more than 1.1 billion units in 2007. The catch is that a lot of these handsets are going to emerging markets.

It seems like AT&T is on a roll this week, so on top of the recently launched Pantech Matrix and Samsung Propel there is a new SonyEricsson cellphone on their catalog, more specifically the W760a. According to the AT&T website, the device costs $120 after discounts which can’t be considered a bad price.
Interesting features on the W760a? How about integrated GPS with WayFinder Navigator? Or what do you think of the mobile email support with services such as AOL, Yahoo, AIM, Windows Live? Not good enough? Maybe the 3.2-megapixel camera is the extra you really need?
There are still more goodies on the Walkman phone, like ShakeControl that lets you shake the cellphone to skip tracks, and a nice screen that measures 2.2-inches

On top of the Kate cellphone that we mentioned previously, there are is another device from Sony Ericsson making its internet debut - the Filippa. Interestingly, both devices have a women’s name, call it coincidence or something else? You decide.
The Sony Ericsson Filippa features a better camera than Kate, which is set at 5-megapixels and some extras such as BestPic, PhotoFix, Digital Zoom, and the obvious active lens cover.
On the display we’ve got a QVGA screen that measures 2.2-inches and is scratch resistant. Thanks to the TV out function, you can view photos and watch videos on your television. The internal memory only has 140MB of storage, but you can increase it by using memory cards.

Sony has been preparing a new cellphone with an odd name - Kate - and according to the folks at the Unofficial SonyEricsson Forums, the device has been spotted on the wild! Sadly there aren’t any “real” photos of Sony Kate, but you can take a look at the sketch to fulfill your curiosity.
As far as we can tell, The SonyEricsson Kate has a 3.2-megapixel camera (and not 5MP like stated before) with a special feature which is the dual LED flash. On the camera details there still is a smile shutter and an active cover for the lens.
Much like what happens with other SE cellphones, there are some dedicated keys located on the side, which are supposed to be used for the camera and video functionalities.
