All The Latest Cell Phone, Gadget and Tech News

Samsung has a brand new phone for us but this one is not as impressive as some of the recent smartphones created by the company. The C5130 is a slider phone which lines perfectly with Samsung’s previous creations. The phone is rather an entry-level gadget which will probably be available for a more than decent price, if not free, with new contracts from different carriers.

The C5130 comes with quad-band GSM/EDGE and UMTS 3G connectivity, a 2-inch display, Bluetooth 2.0, a 1.3-megapixel camera, microSD support, FM radio and music player capabilities. As you can clearly see, the C5130 is decent handset but maybe you’re looking for something more than decent.

Not much is known about the Nokia 2705 Shade except for the fact that it will be joining the Verizon ranks as one of many entry-level cellphones later this year, but just know that while it’s no N97, it could be just what you are looking for if you are on the hunt for an affordable, good-looking flip phone in the near future.  The Shade is expected to replace the Nokia Mirage on Verizon when it is released and looking at the similarities between the two feature phones, could we expect the same kind of low-end features that we saw on the Mirage or something better, like an improved camera and some type of social networking support? It looks like at least the camera might see a tiny bump as the Shade 2705 has a dedicated camera key, which could turn out to be pretty useless if it houses any lens that is less than 2 megapixels.  We will be on the lookout for anything else that might pop up on this low-end fella, but take the jump for a couple more pictures until then.

Well folks we have a new Android phone from HTC but I guess that’s not a surprise anymore. What’s interesting about this HTC Click that has appeared in pictures around the web is that it’s supposed to be an entry-level phone. That means you should be able to purchase your first Android phone for an even lower price. No numbers have been mentioned yet and we don’t have any clear data regarding features so we’ll be waiting for HTC to tell us all about the phone soon.

  • At this point, the fact that Samsung is launching new phones will not surprise anyone. The company has been doing it all year long and we hope it won’t stop anytime soon. This time around Samsung has new entry-level phones for us.

The S6700 is a dual-band HSDPA slider phone ready to offer you a 2.4-inch QVGA display, a 3 megapixel camera with auto-focus and dual-LED flash, GPS, 120MB of internal memory and microSDHC support.

The C5510 comes with a 2-megapixel camera, a 2.2-inch QVGA display and microSDHC support.

The M2510 is a music-oriented phone with music dedicated keys, a 3.5mm headphone jack, FM radio tuner with RDS, DNSe audio enhancement and a 1.3 megapixel camera.

The last in the list is the M2310. It sports a VGA camera, 9MB of internal memory upgradeable up to 8GB via microSD card and quad-band EDGE connectivity.

We have no availability dates just yet and as for prices we can probably assume you’ll get these phones for free with now contracts. Which one did you like best?

    LG Glance

With the LG Glance, it seems you either love or hate the gold toned woven metal design on the back, however it is generally agreed upon that the front is attractive and functional. The buttons are big and tactile, and for an entry-level phone, the QVGA (240 x 320) screen is pleasing. This phone is also amazingly thin at .38 inches. A noted difference between this and other candy bar style phones, is the placement of the clear button- it’s in the center, directly under the joystick.

Since this is an entry-level phone, there aren’t as many fancy Verizon gizmos to play with as found on higher-end LG phones, however it does feature Bluetooth 2.1, GPS, WAP 2.0 browser, microSD slot and a decent 1.3 megapixel camera with digital zoom. The current price of this handset is $49.99 after rebates and a 2-year contract.

  • We have one more Samsung handset for you and this one has been officially launched in Russia. The S3500 is an entry level phone which will remind you of that Soul U900 from Samsung. The phone will be available for around $210 and it should hit other European markets soon. And here’s what we can expect from it:

    • Quad-band GSM/EDGE connectivity (850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz)
    • 2.2-inch TFT display with 262K colors and 240 x 320 pixels
    • Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP and EDR
    • Music player
    • FM radio
    • Web browser, email
    • Document viewer
    • 2MP camera with video recording
    • 35MB of on board memory
    • MicroSD card support
    • 99.9 x 48.0 x 13.9 mm

Not the smartphone that you were looking for, but still a handset to consider if you don’t need all those smartphone features.

  • Who said that this edition of CES should only bring us hot but complicated future gadgets? Nokia knows we are living during harsher times so the company has brought us a new basic phone, the Nokia 1006. It’s a candybar phone which will get you talking to your friends and family, but that’s pretty much it will do for you. The display comes with 262,000 colors, there are olyphonic ringtones, wallpapers and screensavers to play with. A 500-contact phone book, a voice recorder, a speakerphone and Bluetooth are also in that 1006 hanset.

The phone will arrive in the first quarter of the year and it will probably be offered for free in many countries with different plans.

  • Samsung has announced two new entry-level clamshells, one each for GSM and CDMA markets. I know some of you might skip to the next post spotting the word “entry level” but you never know when you might need a low-end device if your do-it-all isn’t in the vicinity. Of the two, the Samsung B308 (B as in “basic”) looks to be the GSM entrant with dual-band GSM support, an FM tuner, Java games, USB connectivity, and a 1.5-inch CSTN display. The B289 is much more sparser in features with a 500-capacity contact book, 200 SMS memory, and a 1.5-inch CSTN display. No information on when or for how much these two will be available, but we will not be surprised if they turned up in Korea first with a not-so-heavy price tag.

While it’s top line isn’t satisfactory for some, Motorola does seem to have covered budget cell phone market pretty good. Fresh off the block is the Motorola W362, a followup to the W360 released last year, which comes with a cheap price tag, thanks to being manufactured in Motorola’s Indian unit, and features that are worthy of a low-range stalwart.

For Rs. 4199 ($98), the Motorola W362 will service you on the 800MHz CDMA frequency with a 160×128px 65K color TFT display, an mp3 player, FM radio, USB 1.1 support, expandable memory (no idea what kind), and a VGA camera (no video recording).

The Motorola W362 will be available across India on the subcontinent’s leading CDMA carrier, Reliance, at the price of Rs. 4199 although there is no info on when.

Let’s tear our eyes away from all that befuddling high-tech gadgetry and take a look at the new Nokia 1508, a new low-end cell phone from the Finnish manufacturer. This CDMA cell phone is a slim, lightweight, and simple candybar that has all the makings of being your second communication device to go with your high-end feature-heavy mobile. It can store up to 500 contacts and 400 messages, no small feat for a device in it range. The phone also has a built-in speaker and an integrated FM radio to keep you occupied during those boring commutes. The Nokia 1508 can also record audio for up to three minutes, ideal for saving those short thought bursts that you tend to forget later. An option to connect to the internet via cable keeps you in the loop and ensures that you are connected, if not always.

The Nokia 1508 will be available in the third quarter of 2008 in select CDMA markets and considering its utilitarian features, this one will definitely win over the budget-wary customers.

  • Mio DigiWalker C230 GPS

Mio Technology announced its latest addition to the DigiWalker line-up of portable navigation devices. The new Mio DigiWalker C230, unveiled at the DigitalLife technology tradeshow in New York, is an upgrade to the C220 series and comes in a compact form-factor that is still affordable and comes with pre-loaded maps of the U.S. The C230 boasts text-to-speech directions, something that is hard to find at such a low price. For memory expansion, it presents an SD/MMC memory card slot.

The C2xx series has always been considered entry-level, but the C230, with its ability to speak actual street names, appears to be a nice addition to your gadget collection. There’s a backlight feature, as well as an updated anti-glare display that lets you see maps and menus even on in bright sunlight. Points-of-interest are aplenty with restaurants, hotels and gas stations. Voice guidance in 16 different languages (including English, French and Spanish) is available on the C230, and is powered by an SiRFstar III GPS chipset.

Measuring 3.54″ x 3.30″ x 0.94″, it weighs in at 144 grams (5.08 oz) and is priced at US $249.95. It will hit the markets in October.

  • Verizon Wireless Coupe Mobile Phone

    Verizon Wireless Coupe

Verizon announced its latest addition, the Verizon Wireless Coupe. A basic phone that is designed for what a phone was meant for in the first place - making calls - the Wireless Coupe has earned a Good Housekeeping seal, and even though lacking in many features, it is simple to use. The phone features a dedicated key for calls to 911, as well as programmable ICE (In Case of Emergency, I still love the industry’s acronyms) numbers.

The Verizon Wireless Coupe’s pre-installed tools include a tip calculator, alarm clock, calendar and world clock. Measuring 3.8″ x 1.8″ x 0.8″, the phone weighs 3.3 ounces and has a nice large font-sized display. It also features a convenient-to-use voice dialing feature allowing you to call contacts using their names or numbers.

You can’t get any more entry-level than this. Priced at US $19.99 with a new 2-year agreement, the Verizon Wireless Coupe is now available.
