Marvel Comics Coming to the iPhone

Comics have become the next focus of attention as far as apps for the iPhone or iPod Touch these days and it looks like a marquee comic label will be joining the ranks of Comixology, iVerse and Panelfly. Last August, the lack of known comic brands was brought up here on Mobile Whack and it looks like the developers of the app heard us.

Several new and classic comic book issues will be added to their roster which should get the fancy of people who have started using their iPhones for their comic book collection and reading needs. Prices vary among the three developers though but if you want the cheapest one, then Panelfly should be it with a $0.99 price tag although you may want to consider the comic issues before deciding to purchase the app and from whom.

Knowledge is key and getting information from various modes of references is indeed important. However, considering that the Internet provides a lot of potential alternatives that will not even cost you a dime, this is one app for the iPhone which has good intent but sadly, a ridiculous way of sharing information. The app is called a high end graphic calculator but being sold for $50 is something that may lead to its downfall. It’s practically an almanac, a currency converter and stock analysis tool for you iPhone and even comes with features that are not available at its official site. But seriously, who in his right mind would throw away $50 for this kind of app?

People need apps for their iPhones. But at $49.99 that is a bit too steep and seems like the developers did not consider consumer preference when they priced this app!

Android v1.6 Becomes Official

A few days back, speculations were rising that Google would be releasing the Android v1.6. Well now it is all official! Google officially launched the Android v1.6 (also known as the “Donut”), armed with a wide array of features that should make Android developers all jumpy and curious. Among the new features of the Donut include CDMA support and better resolution which bump screens all the way up to 800×480 thus providing support for better images for higher end-screens.

Other enhancements include a new “Quick Search” box and a battery usage system. These and a whole lot more of enticing features are what the new Android promises to provide developers. Google expects first sanctioned appearances on devices to start popping out by October.

Novell has announced the release of the MonoTouch 1.0, a new solution that should become an ideal alternative for iPhone app developers who have been limited to using C and Objective-C in delivering apps for the iPhone and the iPod Touch. With the new iPhone app solution, the MonoTouch 1.0 allows programmers to make use of the Microsoft.net framework and other .NET programming languages.

As the number of iPhone and iPod Touch owners continue to swell, the same holds true for apps needed for various use. This number could very well balloon further with this new iPhone app solution, broadening the programming languages needed by iPhone programmers to come up with new apps that can possibly be included in Apple’s iTunes store. To date, there are over 50,000 apps available and over a billion downloaded apps thus far.

For individuals only building applications for the Apple Apps Store, MonoTouch Personal Edition is available for $399 per developer for a one-year subscription.

Here is a prelude to why the iStat App was removed from the iTunes Store. Apparently, Apple had made a bold announcement aimed at the app developers to remove the “Free Memory” function or be deleted. There was no specific reason given on why such a directive was handed out by Apple.

The free memory feature is a helpful app that accomplishes its task by allocating memory until the iPhone OS detects a critical low memory level and starts terminating other background processes.

iPhone owners who want to avoid a complete device restart should force quit Mail, Safari, and iPod, if necessary, and then hold down the sleep-wake button until the red slider appears. After that, down hold the home button as well until the application quits. Now why would Apple want to do away with that?

TweetPhoto iPhone App Rejected!

Let it be known that when it comes to originality and uniqueness, iPhone app developers better be careful. It seems that a slight resemblance can change the fortunes for iPhone apps awaiting approval and such is the plight that the TweetPhoto iPhone app encountered when Apple rejected the said app.

The trouble started due to a slight resemblance. The TweetPhoto had a slight resemblance to Polaroid photographs. Polaroid photographs has made it known that they are objecting to other applications that highlight similar features to theirs since it infringes their rights.

The decision could have been easier to accept if now for some inconsistencies. For one, there is another app that is closely similar to the case of TweetPhoto yet it was approved by Apple. Add to the fact that the resemblance was only “mild” and yet they got the axe.

There are inconsistencies indeed and it looks like Apple still has the final say. Such is the plight an Apple app developer has to go through and unfortunately, the TweetPhoto app for the iPhone is the latest casualty. Do we see an appeal coming soon?

INQ brings two new and easy to use 3G mobiles, equipped with Twitter and Sync capabilities. But that is not all. These new phones from INQ present a wider array of features that should capture the fancy of mobile phone users, particularly the ones who are into social media and some other features that cover videos and photos.

There are 2 phones up for consideration. The first is the INQ Chat 3G, INQ’s first qwerty-style phone and the INQ Mini 3G. Twitter is perhaps the highlight of both new phones, since INQ has worked closely with Twitter developers to come come up with the Twitter apps for both the phones.

Also, these price-sensitive phones boast of a plug and play HSDPA modems enabling high-speed wireless broadband on PCs and Macs. The INQ Chat 3G and INQ Mini 3G applications can be updated over the air, a feature essential to keep pace with how online applications change and consumer usage evolves.

While the FCC is investigating the dismissal of Google’s Google Voice and all related applications from Apple’s App Store we hear that Apple will not refund customers that have purchased Google Voice apps from the store. Apple is instead advising developers to refund customers out of their own pocket. Here’s what a developer had to say about the whole thing:

Apple made it impossible for our customers to receive the fixes, updates, and support by pulling the app. We were fulfilling our end of the bargain. Why should those refunds come out of our pocket?” says Duerr. “The refund issue and lack of respect for our mutual customers has further soured us on the belief that Apple cares at all about their developers … other than the dollars they bring in.

What about you? Did you get a copy of any Google Voice application from the App Store?

Today, businesses are going mobile. iPhone apps normally focus on games and various tasks but we have seen from the past days the release of some specific applications made especially for corporate identity and communication. Now this area is not that easy to do. To be able to achieve this, you need special app developers on board.

However, Moobila may be the answer to the business needs as it makes itself formally available for companies wanting to put the iPhone under its repertoire of business tools familiar in the advanced world today.

Moobila is a certified Apple development partner which offers turnkey solutions for customer needs. It seems that the latest boom these days is to create an iPhone app for a living. At least that is the trend we see with the new apps being announced almost daily. With the growing popularity of the iPhone reaching unprecedented levels, it is apparent that some people have found a new way of income via iPhone apps which can reach as much as $100,000 if they are lucky.

But the key to a great iPhone app relies as well on education and training. For sure, iPhone app developers will agree that they need advanced information and studies to make sure that they keep in step with fellow programmers who have invested heavily in attending workshops and classes. And if there is one event that they should consider attending, it should be the iPhone Boot Camp which will be graced by best-selling iPhone authors and developers as well.

The place to be is New York City which will play host for six days of master classes from August 6 to 11. The event will be spearheaded by bestselling iPhone authors Steve Kochan, author of “Programming in Objetive-C 2.0″ and Jeff LaMarche, co-author of “Beginning iPhone Development.

The affordable early bird rates are as low as $999 for a three day workshop and $300 for one day introductory workshops. Class price includes lunches and refreshments and over two hundred pages of original instruction materials. Students are encouraged to bring independent projects to class, allowing for input from classmates and individual instructor attention.

Apple recently released the second beta for the iPhone’s upcoming OS that is version 3.1. Details are scare on exactly what this update will entail but chances are there won’t be anything too drastic. However it probably includes fixes for the current jailbreak methods on the scene.

Of course since version 3.1 is still in beta form it is currently only available to developers. Of course, if you really want to get your hands on it, your favorite torrent tracker probably can help you there. Then again, the chances of it bricking your device are there so I’d suggest not trying it.

iPhone app developers need all the help they can get as far as advanced scripts and codes are concerned. While they can get a lot of them online, here is one that is sure to be a big boost to their needs.

With the need for reference and source codes in the programming needs, About Objects releases of a couple of iPhone 3.0 developer examples as free, downloadable Xcode projects. These example projects form a progressive series of codes designed to aid developers on their needs, another resource that they can surely find helpful.

These apps are free for use by iPhone developers either for learning or for actual use. Here are some of the example projects released by About Objects:

  • First App demonstrates the basic steps to configuring an iPhone app’s user interface programatically, without requiring an Interface Builder (.nib) file.
  • Editable Detail View demonstrates the use of controls such as text fields and buttons, including how to connect controls to the code that implements their behavior.
  • Animating a View introduces developers to the fundamentals of using Core Animation to animate view transformations.
  • Simple TableView demonstrates how to configure a table view programatically to present a list of values.
  • TableView with Navigation builds on the Simple TableView app to show how to use a navigation controller to manage navigating from a list to a detail view by tapping on a table row.
  • Editable TableView demonstrates how to add, remove, and reorder rows in a list view, and how to edit model object property values in a detail view.
  • TableView File Persistence shows how to create and populate a list of model objects from a property list (plist) file, and how to persist changes to the list.

These samples can be downloaded at the About Objects website.

50 Ways to Promote an iPhone App

When it comes to developing iPhone app software, it is a business in itself. It is not merely a matter of creating and developing unique apps. It also needs to have a purpose, something that this new blog article can highlight.

This comes in the midst of the first year anniversary of the App Store this week, holding more than 60,000 apps which could very well end up unnoticed unless the proper schematics in the marketing aspect is done. Just like business, these apps need a marketing plan so that they can be directed to the right users and the right market.

“Fundamental marketing rules apply, such as defining your target audience and identifying how to reach them. However, this medium requires insight as to what’s technically possible within Apps, how the iPhone App Store works and how social media can be leveraged to spread the word. My hope is that the blog is a practical guide for accomplished developers and expert marketers alike.”

iPorn Still Available on the Web

Get the records straight. iPorn and the controversial “The Hottest Girls” app are two different applications. This was the explanation that iPorn developers wanted to make straight. Some people have misconceived the two, assuming that the app was one and the same. iPorn is still on the web despite the Apple announcement that they are banning adult content from the app store.

“It was widely reported that Apple stated that the developers of ‘The Hottest Girls’ iPhone application added x-rated content directly from their server after the application had been approved and distributed through the iTunes App Store,” stated a representative of iPorn. “In contrast, the makers of the iPorn web application never sought to deceive Apple. Instead iPorn was developed as a web application that can be obtained by users over the age of 18 through their iPhone web browser for free without having to purchase it through Apple’s iTunes App store and bypasses Apple’s ability to censor content from the iPhone.”

So in summary, iPorn is more of an entertainment sate with a saner intent over the pornographic nature that The Hottest Girls carried. iPorn provides its adult users with social networking capabilities similar to those found in YouTube, MySpace and Facebook.

Palm Pre vs iPhone 3GS will be an interesting fight to watch. On one hand we have the rebirth of a cell phone manufacturer and on the other hand we have a young but evermore popular cell phone manufacturer. Both Palm and Apple have released two amazing cell phones, the Pre and the iPhone 3GS and it will be hard to chose one to take home.

And while the eyes of the world are focused on the WWDC in San Francisco, Palm isn’t wasting any time. Over the weekend the first webOS update went live. Version 1.0.2 is now available and it’s supposed to bring stability to your Pre and a new alarm clock. In case you didn’t get it already then go to your Sprint updater and download it OTA style.

As for the SDK, don’t worry developers, Palm said soon. There’s no actual date but you will be programing applications for Palm’s new hot OS soon enough. And when you do, make sure you drop us a line!
