Cowon iAudio 9 for the U.S. too

About a month ago, we posted about the iAudio 9 PMP from Cowon, and we’re pleased to let you know that it will be coming to the United States.

As we previously posted, the Cowon supports many audio formats including MP3, FLAC, Ogg, WAV, APE, WMA, plus video files such as XviD and WMV. Not to mention the other features including the 2-inch screen, composite video output, FM radio, text reader, photo viewer, and voice recorder.

Its U.S. prices are $129 for the 8GB version and $169 for the 16GB. Compare that to the price of say, an iPod Nano.

  • COWON presents new PMP: iAudio 9

We are used to see COWON release a high number of portable media players during a year, and you can mark the iAudio 9 as their latest addition which is suppose to be the successor of the previous iAudio devices.

In terms of features, the COWON iAudio 9 boasts a 2.-inch screen and sadly it can only a read a few video file formats, unlike other PMPs that provide a huge list of supported formats. In this case, there are four options: AVI, WMV, Xvid, and ASF. As for the audio files, it can playback MP3, WMA, OGG, WAV, FLAC and APE. The iAudio 9 might not be a good PMP in the features department, but in the style department it rocks many others out there.

We have a new trial for you and this time it involves Tsera which claims that it has invented the touchpad and hence everyone else using it will have to pay for the privilege. Tsera says that Apple, Microsoft, LG, Philips, Bang & Olufsen, iriver, Coby, Cowon and Meizu are all in violation of a patent owned by the company. The patent is called “Methods and apparatus for controlling a portable electronic device using a touchpad.” And nobody has paid any money to Tsera for using the technology. Given the big names involved in this huge trial we should expect Tsera to walk away with lots of settlements cash in its pocket.

Cowon has announced the launch of D2+, a successor to to its popular portable media player, the D2.  So, what’s new in this iteration.  As far as we can see, not much.  The D2+ seems to have retained the same 2.5-inch 16-million-color touchscreen display, the same support for SD/SDHC/MMC, FM radio, TV-out, USB 2.0 connectivity, and support for MP3, WMA, Ogg, FLAC, and WAV in audio formats with H.264, MP4, and WMV9 video.  BBE+ sound enhancement, which can already be found on the Cowon S9, makes an appearance along with a DMB TV tuner, which makes this new mp3 player only a marginal upgrade over the D2.

There are no details on pricing or availability, but considering the sucess of the D2, it would be wise for Cowon to stick to a worldwide release than just limited to Korea.

    SmartQ 5 PMP

SmartQ 5 might be the PMP you were looking for. It has a 4.3 inch screen and an 800 x 480 resolution. There’s Bluetooth, GPS via USB, touchscreen support and the ability to play various files and go online when you need to be online. There’s no 3G on this version but maybe a future version will get you 3G connectivity too.

If you have that deja-vu feeling that’s because the Chinese company created a PMP that resembles th Cowon in every aspect besides the screen. The price should therefore be significantly lower. But will the SmartQ 5 be able to match the Cowon P5?

In case you have bought the new Cowon S9 PMP you should know that Cowon has released a second firmware update, v2.06 which will get you JPG album art support for all .jpg files and it will fix a bug which caused the system to reboot after the “remove hardware from PC” appeared. The most important update is the Bluetooth speaker support. That means you can stream songs to any Bluetoot-enabled system around you.

    Cowon presents P5 PMP

Portable media players made by Cowon have been mentioned a couple of times, remember the iAudio X7? Or the Q5? Probably not, but that doesn’t matter much because their main target market is in Korea. With that being said, they have presented the upcoming P5 player.

Sporting a 5-inch LCD color screen with a big resolution of 800×480 pixels, the P5 PMP has an unusual processor, more specifically the RMI Alchemu Au1250 that runs at 700MHz. Other details on this fresh player include FM radio, an electronic dictionary, bluetooth, voice recording, and DMB - Digital Multimedia Broadcasting - so you can easily watch TV.

As for the battery on Cowon Q5, it lasts 14 hours of music, or 9 hours of video.

    Cowon Curve S9: Gorgeous PMP

Cowon is already known for coming up with products that have 5 stars in the design category, and the latest S9 Curve is no exception. This portable media player has the chrome look + rounded corners that will most likely make people think it is an Apple product…

Thanks to the big storage capacity options - 8GB or 16GB - it means you won’t have to worry much about the lack of space to add more audio or video content. The best part is that there will be a 32GB version in the “near future”. Obviously, the S9 Curve can read the majority of audio/video file formats, and even has a TV output function.

In order to make everything work, the processor is powered by a dual-core at 500MHz. In addition there is bluetooth, FM tuner, a voice recorder, and T-DMB for digital TV on the go.

Pr.Cowon.X7.jpgReports have circulated that Cowon’s iAudio X5 MP3 player will soon be discontinued. However, all is not lost since reports have been released that a new Cowon MP3 player is in the works. Early reports states that Cowon will release an iAudio X7 model sometime this summer during the IFA 2007 Electronics Expo.

Rumors have led us to this picture (shown here) claiming to be the prototype design submitted back in March, so it’s possible the final product won’t be identical. However, judging from this, the X7 will be completely different from the X5. Instead of a vertical orientation with a 4:3 screen, it appears the X7 will have a 7-inch widescreen and likely feature touchscreen controls, similar to the Q5 media player.

Whatever it looks like, hopefully Cowon will keep with its tradition of creating MP3 players with outstanding sound quality and give the X5 fans something to cheer about. The X5 has enjoyed a loyal following since it debuted in 2005, due partly to its excellent sound quality. There’s no word on exactly what the X7 has in store - all we can do is wait.
