Here is something useful to spur up the promotional efforts of companies. Called the iScratcher app for the iPhone or the iPod Touch, this app takes the concept of the usual scratch-to-win contests we often see for marketing and promotional contests where customers can possibly win a prize if they are lucky enough to scratch one via their mobile screens. The app is free and should be a great boost to the marketing and promotional efforts that companies can turn to, especially when it comes to contests, sweepstakes and giveaways.

In a move to help jack up the PhotoScatter.com app’s chances to make it to the Top 100 Apps List on iTunes. Ryan Wade, the founder of Unique Apps, has announced that he is giving away $1,000 in total prizes via YouTube to support his app to make it to Top 100 Apps list. There will be over 60 winners who will be awarded prizes thus providing entrants a better chance of winning. Ryan details the contest mechanics on the video below.

Also, Ryan acknowledged MobileWhack as well for featuring the PhotoScatter.com app where he shared his gratitude for being highlighted on our site.

“The contest has actually been somewhat of a success already. We’ve already been featured on VentureBeat, MobileWhack, and iPhoneFreak … and we are SO THANKFUL to all of them for writing about us! It’s going to be very interesting to see how the contest pans out, but it’s been nice to get at least a little publicity so far!”

From what we know so far, the Samsung Instinct that hit the stores two weeks ago had tremendous success and got sold almost immediately. For Sprint the Instinct is a huge success. There were reported shortages of the instinct in some locations. The Instinct just became the fastest selling EVDO device in Sprint’s history. We don’t have any numbers to back that up yet but they should emerge at some point.

And now you can even win some prizes with your Samsung Instinct. The first 1000 videos to be accepted and posted to YouTube will get $20 each while one big winner will be drawn, and a lucky video will win $10,000. You should be making a home “Sell Out” video and just upload it to YouTube. The contest ends on August 1st so you better hurry. For more information check out Sprint’s official site and Instinct site. And good luck to all contestants!

Palm and MobiTV announced the Treo Mobile Comedy Film Festival, creating a platform for filmmakers to showcase made-for-mobile movies. The event runs from September 18 through October 18 on the MobiTV service. If you are a Treo smartphone user, you get a one-month free trial of MobiTV.

The finale will be hosted by Susie Essman (Curb Your Enthusiasm) and John Henson (TV Guide network, Talk Soup) on October 18, 2007, at Grauman’s Chinese Theater in Los Angeles. You can submit films on any topic. If selected, winners will get a free trip to LA to attend the awards show, as well as a package of Treo products worth US $1,200. The Best of Festival winner (regardless of category) will also be aiming for a grand US $5,000 prize.

  • iPhone Video Conferencing App

    iPhone video conf

Possibly the coolest iPhone app has made an appearance. Developed by Ken and Greg Aspeslagh for the Iron Coder Live competition at the C-4 Developer Conference, the iPhone Video Conferencing app takes advantage of your Wi-Fi network, iPhone camera and, surprise, surprise, a periscope-like mirror construction to beam the caller’s video onto the callee’s.

Using the iPhone toolchain, the developers hacked the app to capture video from the iPhone’s camera, compress it and send it to a web server — whereupon it is relayed to another iPhone. And vice-versa. Though audio is not supported by the application, the developers have a simple suggestion: call the person you want to video-conf with and turn on the speakerphone. The video conf system needs the Huckleberry mirror - actually a modded one to fit the iPhone. Once you cut it into the proper dimensions, put in your iPhone and you’re ready to roll.

Needless to say, the demo won first place in the Iron Coder Live.
