Designer Anthony Reed is responsible for this E ink concept phone. It’s a candybar phone which has its display splattered with E ink. That means all the text, all the graphics and images are going to be shown in black and white only.
There aren’t many specs other than the ink and the metal casing. In case it’s ever going to be picked up we’ll be there to cover its story.

Designer Zinc Chan has an interesting concept phone for us. In order to make a call you have to draw the person you wish to call. I know that sounds fun and it should be. It’s not difficult at all. No matter the number you will end up with a drawing. Each point on the map is a point of light with a numeric assignment. Each number will be personalized. And after you dial, simply insert the handset device on your thumb and pinky and start talking. The device is ingenious enough but for now it’s just a concept.

Nokia, please drop whatever you were doing a pay some attention to this cell phone design. It’s not an Apple nano but it’s a Nokia Aeon designed by Mac Funamizu. Since it’s just a concept phone we don’t have any features available. And there’s no price either. All we know it would look and feel like a nano and it would have a nondescript tactile feedback technology with the surface adapting to various actions. That’s a phone right here I’d buy in a heartbeat. But I’ll have to wait for that…

Here’s a concept phone with has Nokia written all over it. I don’t think it’s the phone we’re going to see next week since it proposes quite an interesting idea. As you can see it’s a phone that immediately makes you think it comes with a touchscreen. Indeed it does. The other features aren’t clear right now but we don’t actually need them right now.
We are more interested in the touch experience. This Nokia will get you the feedback you are looking for in your touchscreen phones. And it’s not haptic feedback it’s water. The phone has a pump which allows water to be inserted into the substrate beneath. Thus you will get some buttons on that surface. Wonder if this concept phone will ever be picked up for mass production… What do you think?

Here’s a good looking concept phone. It’s a slider from Sony Ericsson and it might just be the next Walkman phone. The possible future music phone has the Walkman logo visible on the bottom and it shows a memory stick slot on the left side. That’s about all the features we can figure out so far! No, wait! There’s one more! The W570 comes in blue and white. There you have it then. The concept phone from Sony Ericsson isn’t confirmed yet. We’ll be there to see it hit the streets if it will ever do that.

What’s with the big brown box I asked surprised? Where’s the touchscreen? Where’s the Internet connection? Where are all the apps? What OS does it use? Can I go 3G on it?
Despite the fact that I might be disappointed with all the answers to my questions, this Steampunk concept phone is indeed to cool for school. There’s no touchscreen, no applications and no buttons. How do you make calls? Well there are some cards you will need to punch and some binary phone numbers to dial. In your face Apple! Can you do that?

The phone in the picture above is a concept phone shown by DoCoMo and Fujitsu at CEATEC in Japan this year. This splitting cell phone look interesting. I can help but wonder how fast I’d destroy it. I tend to play with cell phones, especially sliders and flip phones to the point where certain parts might fly off.
As you can see there’s a screen and a keyboard segment. The two pieces are connected with magnets and they communicate which each other via Bluetooth. There’s no name for this splitting device as it’s just a concept for now. We’re waiting to see if Fujitsu and DoCoMo will actually send it to massive production. It would be interesting to see what features it will sport.

Sony Ericsson has a GreenHeart concept phone which hasn’t entered production yet, and it might not be massively produced any time soon. The concept phone is meant to prove that a phone is environmentally sustainable through its life cycle.
The GreenHeart will sport some of the various features:

We don’t know for sure if Microsoft is working on a ZunePhone or not, but if it looks anything like this concept from designer Adam Huffman, they can rest assured that they have a winner. Called the Zune Contact, this concept smartphone has a body thin enough to be the envy of any Hollywood star, a 5-megapixel camera, a huge touchscreen that could be multitouch, and a hot-looking user interface. It’s even got a huge thumb rest to take a break from all those gesturing and fingering that this baby clearly needs. So either Microsoft picks this up or we will be stuck talking about that other touchscreen phone for a long time to come!

How would you like to carry a projector, a game controller, a digital projector, all rolled into a handset the size of an iPhone? Feels like a good idea and designer Hideo Kanbara felt the same way too with his latest creation, the Ply concept phone. The idea is lifted from multilayered plywood (hence the name), and Hideo has added a different functionality for each layer comprised. So, the Ply packs a printer, a digital projector, a game controller, and a widescreen touch cell phone combined to form a nice shiny package. Seems too farfetched to become a reality, but in this age of technological advancement, you never know!

One more concept, this time from designer, Takumi Yoshida. The Sens Inclusive cell phone concept doesn’t not have a snazzy touchscreen, but, if it every becomes a reality, will be a great accessory for people with visual handicaps. Coupled with a Bluetooth earpiece, the Sens Inclusive has a keypad with unique shapes for each button, making them distinguishable by touch. It will also be able to provide real-time audio feedback and keeping in mind that some visually impaired people will be able to discern different colors, this concept will use different colors to indicate different phone functions.
Of all the concepts that we have seen until now, this one could really make a difference and change the way that the visually impaired communicate. Let’s hope the bigwigs think the same and pick it up!

It’s back to the basics with this one. Remember the time when cell phones were just cell phones, used to make make and receive calls before they became the media monsters that they are now? The “Need” concept is just that with an elongated body and rudimentary functions of making/receiving calls and text messaging. Designer Tamer Koseli has included two screens back to back on the concept phone, one of which is a touchscreen acting as the only input method, given the lack of keys. Number dialing and text messages can be directly done by writing them on the touchscreen. The other display is an OLED screen, which can be customized according to user preferences. Read on for some more pictures of the “Need.”
