All The Latest Cell Phone, Gadget and Tech News

With the iPhone finally going to China after months and months of negotiations and false announcements, we also hear that another 2009 hot phone might be headed that way. The Palm Pre is the phone in question and China Telecom is the carrier said to be in talks with Palm for the handset. No clear announcement has been made so far but it’s probably only a matter of time until Palm will ship it’s Pre to China. What do you think, would Palm’s Pre commercial be more popular in China?

  • Huawei C7300 and T550+ in China

Huawei is preparing for the launch of the C7300 and T550+ in China and has released some specifications for the phones.

The first phone, the C7300, has a 2.5 inch QVGA touchscreen display with 65k colors, GPS, handwriting recognition, 2MP camera, MP3 player and MicroSD card support. It’s a CDMA2000, which will mean it will probably be launched through China Telecom.

The second phone, the T550+, supports both TD-SCDMA and GSM, and will launch through China Mobile. Most of the features from the C7300 transfer over to the T550+.

No word on pricing or release date have been announced.

  • If you’re reading this from China then boy do we have some good news for you. China Telecom is apparently going to sell BlackBerry smartphones soon. Sure you’re still waiting for that iPhone we told you countless times but the BlackBerry thing seems more likely to happen soon.

China Telecom is working with RIM to launch some Berry phones in China but there aren’t any official launch dates let alone prices. Neither China Telecom nor RIM are talking just yet so we’re going to be in for some waiting. In case everything goes well RIM might see an increase in sales soon as China is definitely a market to get into. But then again nothing might happen since RIM’s previous partnership with China Mobile didn’t turn out so good in terms of sales.

It seems that all eyes are at the Mobile World Congress 2009. Most mobile solution manufacturers will be there to showcase their latest mobile solution models and among them include the ZTE corporation which promises to unveil a new line of handsets. Among the expected handsets they will be unveiling include the Vodafone and China Mobile.

The VF 1231 model will be the highlight of ZTE’s showcase which has been developed especially for Vodafone. The smartphone is based on Windows Mobile platform and has a single chip for GSM and EDGE.

ZTE’s smartphones range from low to high-end handsets. Latest models include:

  • The ‘XIANG’ series of 3.5G super slim HSDPA/HSUPA handsets
  • The e760 (a GSM-based handset custom-made for China Mobile)
  • The D820/D810 (a CDMA-based handset custom-made for China Telecom)
  • The U981, a top-end smartphone that was deployed by China Mobile during the Beijing Olympic Games.
  • “The demand for smartphones has reached the point where they are no longer seen as a luxury or a strictly work-related item. ZTE has recognized this trend early on and invested in developing a range of smartphones that not only offer a sleek design, superior processing capabilities and attractive price end consumers desire, but also work smoothly on the carrier’s network. ZTE is meeting the specific requirements of leading mobile operators such as Vodafone and China Mobile, and helping smartphones become a popular item worldwide,” said Xiong Hui, vice president of handset division of ZTE Corporation.

China is probably the dream country when it comes to cell phone makers and mobile carriers. It has the world’s largest mobile market which will only grow. The Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said back in November 2008 that there were 633.84 million Chinese mobile subscribers. And only three carriers get to share it: China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom. I imagine it’s really hard for them to share all those millions subscribers… or not! And China has about as many more people left who are potential customers so we should see cell phone makers still struggling to get some of that market share.

    China Approves 3G Licenses

China seems to be heading towards the future communications wisely. The 3G licenses have been approved and we should expect China to start building its 3G network. And China has been waiting for 3G for quite a while now. Remember those 3G-less and WiFi-less custom ordered iPhones for the Chinese market? What will happen to them now that the country will have 3G support?

A lot of money will be made off the whole 3G business. The main carriers, China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom, as well as the equipment makers like ZTE and Comba Telecom Systems will get a piece of that Chinese 3G cake while the rest of the world is getting ready for 4G via WiMAX or LTE.
