Nokia is ready to take phone charging to the next level. Naturally that next level seems to be wireless power otherwise there wouldn’t be any point for Nokia to join the Wireless Power Consortium. Other important members are Philips, Sany and Duracell so we’re thinking that wireless charging is going to become more and more popular in the near future. Don’t expect to see Nokia phones ready to charge Palm Pre style right away, but who knows what the future will bring. Here’s what Markku Verkama, Director of Nokia’s Devices R&D said:
Wireless charging technology carries significant potential to enhance consumer experience of battery charging. Consumers expect ease of use and general compatibility of mobile devices. By joining the Wireless Power Consortium, Nokia continues to support the open standards approach that aims to meet these consumer expectations. Wireless Power Consortium is the first serious effort by the leading companies to harmonize the wireless charging technologies.
Do you charge any of your gadgets wirelessly?

Apple’s been known for some crazy patents in the back but I think this one tops the cake. Their recent patent filing is for something they are calling ‘active packaging’.
Essentially, ‘active packaging’ is a retail package that charges the device inside while also transmitting data to and from it. For instance, if an iPhone had this kind of packaging the device would not only be fully charged but would have the latest firmware even if it was released after the phone was packaged.
Sure this is cool and all, but how much is it going to cost us just to get this new kind of packaging? If it costs more money, I’ll settle for the normal cardboard box.

The Touchstone is a remarkable dock for the Pre as it requires absolutely no wires to charge the newest Palm handset. And it looks like some Sprint stores are already selling the chargers days ahead of the actual Pre launch. Question is, why buy a charger if you don’t have the guarantee of getting an actual Pre? And this Touchstone has been sold for $20 less than the regular asking price. Anyone care to explain?
