Nokia is ready to take phone charging to the next level. Naturally that next level seems to be wireless power otherwise there wouldn’t be any point for Nokia to join the Wireless Power Consortium. Other important members are Philips, Sany and Duracell so we’re thinking that wireless charging is going to become more and more popular in the near future. Don’t expect to see Nokia phones ready to charge Palm Pre style right away, but who knows what the future will bring. Here’s what Markku Verkama, Director of Nokia’s Devices R&D said:

Wireless charging technology carries significant potential to enhance consumer experience of battery charging. Consumers expect ease of use and general compatibility of mobile devices. By joining the Wireless Power Consortium, Nokia continues to support the open standards approach that aims to meet these consumer expectations. Wireless Power Consortium is the first serious effort by the leading companies to harmonize the wireless charging technologies.

Do you charge any of your gadgets wirelessly?

6 tips for extending the battery life of your cell phone:

    - Turn-off wireless connection like Wi-Fi if you are not using them. Many of us of tend to leave Wi-Fi on even in the areas where there is no Wi-Fi network.

    - Turn off the 3G feature if you don’t use it or if there is no 3G service provided.

    - Use vibrating alert in meetings or in the library, for instance, otherwise turn it off because it is a power hungry feature. Furthermore, switch off keypad tones and reduce ringing volume if you are not in a loud environment.

    - Reduce screen brightness to the lowest level possible where you can still see things on the screen clearly, displays use a lot of power to illuminate.

    - Keep your phone screen as simple as possible, screensavers and animated wallpapers use up battery power to stay running. Better yet, turn off screensavers and stick to a simple wallpaper.

    - Terminate applications as soon as you complete work on them. To do this, press the menu key and end all the applications that you do not need.

  • Privus continues its expansion as far as making its Caller ID software compatible with most mobile devices as it announces the compatibility of their service to telecom giant Nokia. Earlier this month, Privus Mobile had announced the same software for the Android phone.

Bringing the similar intent it had in providing Caller ID options for mobile devices, Nokia mobile phone owners will now be able to screen and have the option on whether to accept or reject incoming calls. Apparently this is a form of protection for mobile owners, avoiding the unnecessary calls that may be worthless or perhaps be unknown to them.

“With Privus Mobile, Nokia smartphone customers and those using Symbian OS devices now have the power to know who’s calling without having to answer the phone, check voicemail or call the person back. The average cell phone user is deprived of unknown caller’s names. It’s time they knew who’s on the other end of the line. It’s time they knew Privus Mobile.”

  • If you’re serving time for any reason, we’re not about to judge here, we advise you not to bring a cell phone in prison no matter how Prison-Break-like fun it looks like. Derrick Ross, a 38-year old three-time burglary felon has been caught with a mobile phone and sentenced for an additional 60 years. That means he’s going to be 98 when he’s going to be able to get a new cell phone of his own.

60 years seems a little extreme but prosecutor Allyson Mitchell said that the sentence should send a message to anyone else thinking about getting a cell phone in prison. Usual sentence is an extra 2 to 10 years but 60 years will do too. Oh and in case you’re reading these lines from somewhere behind bars then you should stop doing it. Now!

The video above is totally funny considering the fact that nowadays everyone should be familiar with concepts like “vibration alert”. It’s really simple, when in a room packed with people, end especially when in the White House, turn those ringtones off for ten minutes. And don’t leave the room to answer a phone call right in the middle of a press conference. Or if you decide to do that, then simply send the appropriate video to us so we can have some laughs!

  • Teletouch Communications Inc. continues its drive to put e-waste in its place as the company has announced that they will be continuing its “Go Green with Hawk” cell phone recycling and disposal program at the upcoming Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial PGA TOUR Golf Tournament, being held Monday May 25 through Sunday May 31, 2009, at the Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.

In conjunction with Colonial staff and PGA TOUR officials, spectators will be encouraged to bring their old, unused, and in many cases, no-longer-working cell phones to specially designed recycling bins at each of the major visitor entrances to the Colonial. Teletouch’s Hawk Electronics division staff members will empty them each day, and return collected items to the Company’s approximately 50,000sf warehouse and office facility in Fort Worth, Texas, for refurbishment for use by various Hawk-related charity groups, or proper disposal, as applicable.

Cell phones contain many toxic materials that pollute the environment and threaten human health. When recycled responsibly, many of the metals and other materials can be recycled, further helping to protect the planet.

One problem that new iPhone users have to deal with is the fact that some iPhones are locked to a certain network service provider. Especially the iPhone 3G 2.2.1 which many thought was unlockable, you are constrained to sign up with them. But that was yesterday’s news.

iPhone Unlocking Solutions has changed this with the release of its new one-click unlock software. And to make it possible for more people to unlock their iPhones, Unlock-the-iPhone.com has temporarily lowered the price of its software to just $29.95.

Unlock-the-iPhone has become the number-one iPhone unlock provider, thanks to its one-click solutions for unlocking the iPhone. The iPhone Unlocking Solutions software was a breakthrough for people wanting to unlock the iPhone (http://www.unlock-the-iphone.com) but without the technical knowledge to take apart their iPhones and physically make the phones usable with any cell phone carrier.

Other solutions soon became available to unlock the iPhone, but most were either unreliable, putting users’ iPhones at risk of being rendered useless — and, again, voiding the warranties — or extremely expensive. In fact, that is still the case today: Other software solutions that can actually unlock the iPhone typically cost between $80 and $100.

The software available at Unlock-the-iPhone.com, however, is both simple and affordable. What’s more, the software so reliably unlocks the iPhone 3G 2.2.1 it comes with a 100% money-back satisfaction guarantee.

The Moto V10 phone has just been announced by Motorola in South Korea. This mid-range 2G does seem to bear a bit of a resemblance to Motorola’s RAZR V9 with slim, square-ish design.  The company used Tandem Display technology for the Moto V10, with a handset that features two displays, one embedded on either side of the flip.

This clamshell handset also features a unique gradation of black and red. The Motorola V10 should be available for purchase in South Korea in a few weeks. No word on pricing yet.

    EOD Concept Phone

The Japanese manufacturer, Kyocera, has come up with a futuristic phone that changes shape from a clamshell to a wallet or clutch-purse. Nicknamed the “EOS,” the concept folding phone incorporates a flexible OLED display surrounded by a soft and semi-rigid polymer casing.

Housed in a neat, compact design, the concept phone offers great adaptability, thanks in part to the flexible screen that unfolds to reveal the widescreen display. Furthermore, the EOS doesn’t need any battery, because the phone translates kinetic energy into an electric charge via an range of nano-scale piezoelectric generators when it physically interacts with the user. When not in use this sleek design can hide the keyboard.

  • If only it were this simple! Everyone knows that by now, the real problem that people have to address is the filing of their taxes. People are scrambling with all the paperwork and fulfilling the requirements to avoid legal issues and penalties. But did you know that in Sweden, all it takes is one SMS message and you are done?

To file taxes in Sweden all you need to do is open a new text message, enter your Social Security number and a security code sent to you by mail, and zip it off to the Department of the Treasury. This is how lots of Swedish people will file their income taxes in May, as they have for the last five years.

    So what’s the downside?

What Swedes actually do with their cell phone is sign a tax declaration that has already been prepared by the country’s tax authority, officially called Skatteverket. It already knows everything about Swedish taxpayers’ income–from a range of sources.

Taxpayers can only sign their forms via text (the number’s 71144) if they accept all the Skatteverket’s calculations and if–to the great joy of the agency–they renounce all deductions.

These days, you have to keep track of your data and mobile phone utilization. Apparently the iPhone now has one app it can rely on and it is called the Pageonce app.

Pageonce has just made this handy utility for iPhone that keeps tabs on on your minutes and data usage - you can even look over your bill and figure out your current balance. The full feature list includes:

    • View current minute balance, rollover minutes, data plan, SMS use, billing cycle, and previous payments on a single page
    • Receive alerts when you reach 90% of your limit or when bill is due
    • Breakdown information by family member
    • View and pay phone bill directly from Cell Minute Tracker

Very cool, but it will be really impressive when we can top-up or change other service details right from the device in an interface like this. Sure, some carriers let you do it by SMS right now, but a dedicated, preloaded app on any handset would be really helpful.

Of course, then carriers would have a harder time pinging you on overage charges… Starting tomorrow you can pick up Cell Phone Minute Tracker in the App Store right over here. Just remember, it’s U.S.-only.
