You’ve gotta love Finland. The country is probably the first one ready to guarantee 1Mbps broadband Internet connectivity to its citizens. That’s an impressive move coming from the Finnish government which should definitely be followed by others. Broadband access will become a human right at some point next year and in 2015 Finland is preparing to raise that number to 100Mbps. That means that Finland’s Internet infrastructure is definitely going to grow with the government supporting its development. So what do you say folks? Are you ready to move to Finland for a while?

Are you happy with your broadband Internet provider? Would you switch to broadband over power lines if it was available? Well it looks like there’s an IEEE working group that has completed the main development of the standard and it has released the first draft of technical specs. That doesn’t mean you’re going to get broadband over power lines soon but it’s good to know we’re getting somewhere on this matter.
Jean-Philippe Faure, chair of IEEE P1901 Working Group said:
This is a major milestone. Main development is completed and finalization now starts through successive rounds of circulations for vote and comment.
When completed, the IEEE P1901 will offer you bandwidth speeds greater than 100Mb/s but like I said, we have no specific dates so far.

It looks like Comcast will not die without a fight. Although a little late, the company seems ready to match Cablevision’s 100Mbps ultra-fast Internet offer. The new product is supposed to be launched soon and it will be similar to Cablevision’s 101Mbps Ultra speed offer. Comcast customers should expect download speeds of up to 100Mbps and upload speeds of up to 40Mbps. How much will the new service cost? Considering that Comcast is currently charging $190 per month for 50Mbps downlink and 20Mbps uplink, should we expect it to doubld the price? Let’s not forget that Optimum Ultra will cost you only $99 so Comcast should also find a way to match the new price tags.

Australia’s Prime Minister Kevin Rudd made his “single biggest infrastructure decision” according to him, when he decided to allocate a total of A$43 billion for the creation of a nationwide high speed broadband network. When everything will be finished, about 90% of homes and businesses will get up to 100Mbps speeds via a fiber optic connection, while everyone else should cope with only 12 Mbps from a wireless/satellite connection.
49% of that impressive amount will come from the private sector, while the government will only invest A$4.7 billion initially with A$20 billion coming from a national infrastructure fund and the future sale of bonds. The project will be finished in 7 or 8 years so you might just have to wait a few years to have your Internet connection bumped up to better speeds.

3, not a number, but one of UK’s largest mobile operators is set to release its very own wireless router, the D100 from Huawei. The company claimed that this router enables up to four people to share mobile broadband connection. The idea behind this is that you slot your 3G USB modem into the wireless router made by Huawei and others can access the Net via a Wi-fi link. The device will only work with a USB modem supplied also by 3.
Some people would like to disagree the need for such a device as its easy to share a mobile broadband connection just by turning your PC, Mac, or laptop into a wireless access point through software.
According to the official 3 UK online store the D100 is available in black or while and costs £69.99 as a one-off cost. The store also list which USB modems you can use with it.

It isn’t very often that you won’t get any backlash when you are the self-proclaimed first at something. And after Sky claimed they were the first, and only, broadband provider to offer “truly unlimited” broadband, Virgin was none too happy.
An official Virgin spokesperson had this to say on the matter:
“We were the first ISP to provide unlimited broadband packages to our entire customer base, including both cable and ADSL, and have never imposed any form of ‘fair use’ policy.”
Hey guys? When one of you can offer me truly FREE, unlimited broadband, then we’ll talk.
