Nokia is ready to take phone charging to the next level. Naturally that next level seems to be wireless power otherwise there wouldn’t be any point for Nokia to join the Wireless Power Consortium. Other important members are Philips, Sany and Duracell so we’re thinking that wireless charging is going to become more and more popular in the near future. Don’t expect to see Nokia phones ready to charge Palm Pre style right away, but who knows what the future will bring. Here’s what Markku Verkama, Director of Nokia’s Devices R&D said:

Wireless charging technology carries significant potential to enhance consumer experience of battery charging. Consumers expect ease of use and general compatibility of mobile devices. By joining the Wireless Power Consortium, Nokia continues to support the open standards approach that aims to meet these consumer expectations. Wireless Power Consortium is the first serious effort by the leading companies to harmonize the wireless charging technologies.

Do you charge any of your gadgets wirelessly?

  • The plastic MacBooks have long sat idle while the unibody MacBooks have gotten a refresh so it would only make sense that Apple is gearing up to launch fresh hardware.

Recent reports coming out of AppleInsider suggest that a plastic MacBook with a thinner design is currently being manufactured and could possibly hit store shelves within the next couple of weeks. Furthermore, they say they will also feature a built-in battery much like the ones found in their unibody brethren.

Rather disturbing reports come from all across Europe as it looks like some iPhones and iPods have decided to explode all of a sudden. Does this mean you shouldn’t buy a new iPhone or iPod in Europe?

Apple did comment on the situation and here’s what it said:

To date, there are no confirmed battery overheating incidents for iPhone 3GS and the number of reports we are investigating is in the single digits

The iPhones with broken glass that we have analyzed to date show that in all cases the glass cracked due to an external force that was applied to the iPhone.

So far we’ve heard about incidents in France, UK, Holland and Sweden. People haven’t suffered major injuries yet but that doesn’t mean things couldn’t go worse. I’m sure nobody would appreciate pulling out glass shards from their eyes or ears. What about you? Did you have any problems with your new iPod or iPhone 3GS?

How long can you operate on your average netbook battery? The previous record for a MSI Wind was 13 hours out of a 6-cell battery. I say previous since the absolutely new record is 25 hours. How was that pulled off? Well a 9-cell battery is responsible for all that and you can check it up in the video above. The test is unofficial and Battery Eater was set to the lowest setting. On a regular day-to-day use a MSI Wind with a 9-cell battery could pull off an impressive 18 hours of ongoing activity which should be more than enough for your needs. After all, you do need to sleep, right?

This Mili Phonesuit Power Pack for your iPhone is another charger made for one of the most famous handsets available so far. There’s no point in hiding it, Apple’s iPhone gets lots of cases, chargers and power packs just because everyone out there is trying to make a buck or two off of all that fame. I wonder if the Pre will get a similar treatment later this year.

Getting back to that Mili Powersuit then! It will give you an extra 1,800mAh battery which can offer you 350 hours of standby time, 6 hours of talking and/or 3G browsing and 12 hours of EDGE use. Why should you get it? Well the USB port it comes with will let you charge other devices too. The charger is available in 8 different designs and it costs $80.

That shiny piece of dirt on that finger there is a the world’s smallest working fuel cell. The battery was developed by engineers over at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and it’s only measures 3mm per side.

This battery has been totally redesigned. It has four components: a water reservoir, a metal hydride chamber below, a thin membrane which separates them and an assembly of electrodes meant to conduct the electricity. Now that we can imagine how this thing works, can we imagine it inside our gadgets? And stuck, say, about 50 of those in our newest cell phones?

The fuel cell here generates 0.7 volts and a current of 0.1 miliamps for 30 hours before finishing off its fuel. And the latest designs can get you up to 1 miliamp. So I guess we’re not sure yet where this technology is heading to, but cell phones might get it too, right?

In a world where size usually matters we keep asking for smaller and smaller cell phones. We want them lighter too and not that width either. And guess what? Those smart brains developing smaller cell phones will have to insert as many cool features inside those tiny cases or else we’re going to the competition.

And usually developers manage to include a great deal of new features in every phone, despite making them smaller. Unfortunately that also means that the batteries are going to be smaller and therefore pack less energy per charge than we want. Like the G1’s battery for example. It’s not the best battery HTC could come up with. As a matter of fact the G1 will die before the iPhone as the latter one does pack a better battery.

That’s why Seidio came up with the 2600mAh Innocell replacement battery which will get you twice the battery juice than the regular battery. And the Innocell is bigger. Which means your G1 will become bigger than you would want it to be. The picture above is more than explanatory. This Innocell is up for grabs and it costs just $55. Ready to get one?

Remember the 17 inch MacBook Pro which Apple launched at Macworld? Well then you should also remember that amazing battery the new MacBook has inside. A single charge will get you 8 hours of work if using the NVIDIA 9400 GPU or 7 hours if using the 9600 GT. And you can charge you battery for 1,000 times. After that you can replace it. Simply go to Apple and order a replacement. The new battery will cost you just $179 and the whole operation will be performed by Apple employees. Simply go into an Apple Store or ship the MacBook to Apple. Either way you will be taken care of!

  • It’s not clear why it will happen but it looks like T-Mobile and Google are getting ready to offer an extra G1 battery pack to all G1 owners in about a month from now. T-Mobile is cooking up an extended battery project which will address customers complaints regarding the current battery status.

T-Mobile doesn’t have an official statement for this whole event but we should expect one in the future. G1 owners should be notified if they qualify for the free battery pack. Which brings me to my next question. Will all G1 owners get the free upgrade and if not what’s the criteria for getting one?

Get ready to dump your mobile chargers as Intel is going to change the way you’re charging your mobile devices. The company is thinking about using all that free energy that roams around the world. Intel will develop sensors that will be able to get that sunlight, radiation and even body heat and then turn it into usable energy for various gadgets. It looks to me that Intel might just have something here. So let’s dream with them and wait for an actual product. But then again, we were dreaming about cold fusion and that never turned out to be possible yet!

  • We’ve seen lots of devices meant to get you more battery hours for your iPhone. It was time someone invented power accessories for your G1 too. With this double charger you can simultaneously charge your G1 and a spare battery. That means you will have an extra battery to play with during those long days at the office. It’s just $17 but it will get you all the power that you need! Oh, make sure you get a second battery for your G1 too. That might be a little more expensive!

We have some bad news for new MacBook and MacBook Pro owners. It looks like they will suffer if you happen to take out the battery. AC power only will not suffice to get the job done properly. So instead of trying to preserve your battery’s life by removing it from the laptop simply leave it be. You’re going to get a new laptop in the future anyways.

Here are some facts: processor performance is 37% lower on a MacBook Pro on AC only. And Apple confirms all of that and it seems it’s intentioanl. That way the computer won’t shout down if it demands more power than what the AC adapter can provide.
