We have some bad news for new MacBook and MacBook Pro owners. It looks like they will suffer if you happen to take out the battery. AC power only will not suffice to get the job done properly. So instead of trying to preserve your battery’s life by removing it from the laptop simply leave it be. You’re going to get a new laptop in the future anyways.
Here are some facts: processor performance is 37% lower on a MacBook Pro on AC only. And Apple confirms all of that and it seems it’s intentioanl. That way the computer won’t shout down if it demands more power than what the AC adapter can provide.

My laptop battery can give me just under 3 hours of juice, which is far under my needs. But it looks like that might change in the future. Some smart researchers at Hanyang University in South Korea have new Lithium batteries that can last eight times longer than current models.
How did they do it? By using cathode materials in the batteries and replacing the less-efficient graphite with more-efficient silicon. Does that mean I am going to get a 24-hour battery? Well I certainly hope so!

The MacBook Pro battery is a pretty good battery. However you might find yourself in those critical situations where you’d have to take over the world. And we all know such a plan will surely deplete your laptop battery fast.
The external battery in the picture above is meant to get you that extra power you need. The external battery will get you from 6 to 10 hours which isn’t bad at all. It plugs into your Mac like your regular power cord would and you’re off to work.
Howerver this battery costs $450. Not that much, but then again pretty expensive. Don’t just buy it yet. Let’s wait and see what next Tuesday is going to bring

Gizmodo reports that a 9-cell, 7800mAh battery for the MSI Wind is now available for preorder from a third-party vendor, if that doesn’t disturb you a single bit. It is priced at $180, offering a rather nice upgrade to the battery life – roughly six hours of run time according to the site’s calculations.
The battery weighs a whole pound, though, and it won’t be too nice when all you want is a small ultraportable. If you do pack an Asus or other netbooks, you can check out their other, often bigger batteries.

Now this is very interesting. HP announced a new laptop featuring up to 24 hours of continuous operation on a single battery charge. The HP EliteBook 6930p, when configured with an ultra-capacity battery, delivered nearly a full day of performance. Of course, it goes without saying that this is an optional accessory.
The EliteBook combines several energy efficient components including Intel solid-state hard drive and mercury-free LED display. Being a launch customer for the Intel X25-M and X18-M Mainstream SATA SSDs, the EliteBook will be available starting October.

It appears that not only Asus has in mind a better battery for their Eee lines. MSI has launched a 6 cell battery for their Wind netbook and now it’s Acer’s turn to release their version of a 6 cell battery for the Aspire One.
The battery has been already spotted. Apparently it costs “just” $120 to get yourself a new battery. If you’re considering buying an Aspire One better wait it out. Hopefully future versions will come already bundled with the new battery for a cheaper price.

Here’s finally a very good news coming from Asus related to their Eee PC line. It’s not another Eee product, but a new battery. And Asus is going to launch a whole day battery for the Eee PC. The current battery will get you about two and a half hours of life and such an upgrade will be more than welcome. Provided that the price won’t change this is probably the best upgrade they could offer.

Just in case you saved your iPhone from being blended into oblivion, you might need to replace some broken pieces. Well even if that scenario will never actually take place you might want to know that the battery and screen are user replaceable. Sort of…
The 3G iPhone has small screws on the bottom which is weird as the previous model didn’t have any. Unscrewing those will get you closer to the battery, which isn’t soldered. The screen might be also available for replacement, if needed, as it is a separate piece from the capacitive touchscreen. Sure if you do all the work yourself, you will screw with your warranty too, but that’s up to you too.
What happens usually is for a customer to head on over to Apple and ask for a battery replacement. That whole deal comes to $86. And you get to keep you warranty and all that.
I have to admit I would tear the iPhone up just because there are screws around and I am a guy. But hopefully you shouldn’t have to require another battery or screen until the next generation of iPhone hits.

Apple filed a patent application on April 24th 2008 with the title “Sollar cells on portable devices”. Is that thinking out of the box or what? Imagine having your iPod, MacBook or your brand new iPhone equipped with such an alternative power means? They would charge as you go giving you extra hours or wireless fun and work.

Sony is working hard for developing a viable new battery to mount on their cell phone line. Small Fuel Cells 2008, which took place from April 30 to May 2, 2008, in Atlanta was the perfect place to show off their new 50 x 30mm fuel system.
This new battery is based on methanol which it uses as fuel. It’s an actual active fuel-cell system which will control the actual fuel supply with a pump. The power output is supplemented by a Li-polymer secondary battery and it can reach 3W if needed. Using this type of battery will get you up to 14 hours of continuous cell phone video.
Wonder what the competition is doing battery-wise. I always thought Nokia batteries rule but I’d try out one of this Sony babies when they will come out!

When the specs for MacBook Air came out, one of the things which displeased the many is that the MacBook Air battery was described as non-replaceable. According to sources, however, replacing a MacBook Air battery’s a cinch. All you need in your quest to battery replacement is one size-0 phillips screwdriver. Simply flip the Air over, unscrew the battery cover and then with the same tool, unscrew the battery and pull. And that’s it. Considering Apple’s MacBook Air battery replacement service costs US$129, better get yourself a Phillips screwdriver as soon as your Air arrives.

If you’ve ever gotten cut off in the middle of an important phone call or if your batteries have ever died without you having the option to recharge anytime soon, Micro Hydrogen MIGHT be the answer to your problems. Angstrom Powers has been working with Motorola to develop a new and viable fuel cell technology. As more and more people rely on mobile gadgetry, mobile phone companies are compelled to find a way to answer consumer demands, one of which is longer battery life. The Micro Hydrogen, a concept by Angstrom Power, is a combination of many factors including a refillable hydrogen storage tank, fuel cell architecture and micro-fluidics. Angstrom has been testing the prototype on Motorola Slvr L7 phones. The technology can reportedly double the usual talk time and full recharge the battery within ten minutes. Question is, will this technology actually come to the consumer market and if so, will it be able to replace the widely-used lithium ion batteries? Hydrogen seems a bit risky, but we know there’s more to the technology than what Angstrom and Motorola are letting out. Guess we’ll just have to sit it out and wait.

For those who have planned on traveling next year, it’s best to take note of the new lithium-ion battery rules when traveling. These were created in response to lithium-ion batteries being fire hazards. The following were taken from the SafeTravel government web site:
Effective January 1, 2008, the following rules apply to the spare lithium batteries you carry with you in case the battery in a device runs low:
*Spare batteries are the batteries you carry separately from the devices they power. When batteries are installed in a device, they are not considered spare batteries.
*You may not pack a spare lithium battery in your checked baggage
*You may bring spare lithium batteries with you in carry-on baggage – see our spare battery tips and how-to sections to find out how to pack spare batteries safely!
*Even though we recommend carrying your devices with you in carry-on baggage as well, if you must bring one in checked baggage, you may check it with the batteries installed. The following quantity limits apply to both your spare and installed batteries. The limits are expressed in grams of “equivalent lithium content.” 8 grams of equivalent lithium content is approximately 100 watt-hours. 25 grams is approximately 300 watt-hours:
*Under the new rules, you can bring batteries with up to 8-gram equivalent lithium content. All lithium ion batteries in cell phones are below 8 gram equivalent lithium content. Nearly all laptop computers also are below this quantity threshold.
*You can also bring up to two spare batteries with an aggregate equivalent lithium content of up to 25 grams, in addition to any batteries that fall below the 8-gram threshold. Examples of two types of lithium ion batteries with equivalent lithium content over 8 grams but below 25 are shown below.
*For a lithium metal battery, whether installed in a device or carried as a spare, the limit on lithium content is 2 grams of lithium metal per battery.
*Almost all consumer-type lithium metal batteries are below 2 grams of lithium metal. But if you are unsure, contact the manufacturer!
Lithium-ion batteries could be found on mobile phones, laptops and other gadgets.

mStation announced its new mophie juice pack, an iPhone accessory designed to extend your beloved phone’s battery. The juice pack comes pre-charged and will work right out of the box. With an integrated Lithium-polymer battery housed in a comfort-grip case, you can expect up to 250 hours of standby time, 8 hours of talk time, 6 hours of internet use, 7 hours of video playback or 24 hours of audio playback.
The juice pack itself can be charged using your iPhone’s charger. The intelligent power distribution ensures that the iPhone drains out the juice pack first. When you’re done with it, you still have a fully charged iPhone. There is a 4-LED battery status indicator on the back of the mophie - pressing a test button tells you how much power is left with it.
Priced at US $99.95, the mophie juice pack for the Apple iPhone will be available mid-December. Another model, targeted at the iPod touch, will make its way into the markets starting January 2008. It measures 2.5 x 4.75 x .75 inches and weighs in at 3 ounces.

Update: They lady at Enegizer said that this charger is compatible with the new ipod classic and original ipods. Energizer has not done enough testing to confirm it will work with the new versions or the iPhone. Although early testing has been encouraging, we are not able to confirm compatibility at this time.
Energizer unveiled the new Energizer Energi To Go, a portable power solution for the new line-up of Apple iPod music players. The device is powered by Energizer e2 Lithium AA batteries allowing for a compact, cord-free design. It includes a patented intelligent control chip that is designed to maximize the power transfer to the iPod, while a flip design allows it to be used as a stand while charging and fold it later for storing.
According to tests conducted by Energizer, the charger can extend the music playback on the iPod nano by up to 46 hours, and as many as 32 hours on the video iPods. It is equipped with an Apple iPod tip and is adjustable to fit 4th and 5th generation iPods, iPod mini and iPod nano.
Priced at US $29.99, the Energizer Energi To Go Portable Power for iPod will hit the stores in October.

Nokia issued a product advisory for the Nokia-branded BL-5C battery - one of the most standard batteries for its cell phones - manufactured by Matsushita Battery of Japan between December 2005 and November 2006. It seems that in rare cases, the battery may experience overheating initiated by a short circuit while charging, causing the battery to dislodge.
The advisory applies to about 46 million batteries (of the more than 300 million BL-5C batteries, including those produced by other manufacturers) manufactured by Matsushita. At this time, there have been about 100 incidents of the overheating reported globally. Thankfully for Nokia, no serious injuries or proerty damage so far. Also, the issue does not affect any other use of the mobile phone.
If you are a concerned customer that doesn’t want an overheated, dislodging battery (who isn’t?) check the battery for a 26-character ID number printed on the battery and determine if it is one among those manufactured by Matsushita between December 2005 and November 2006, and you will get a free replacement battery.
