I am amazed at all the new uses for augmented reality, especially those that make their appearances on iPhone apps such as Layar. There is now another augreal app with the Car Finder. (By the way, augreal is just an abbreviation that I just made up for Augmented Reality. I’m hoping it will catch on.)
Car Finder relies on an iPhone 3GS camera and digital compass in order to “overlay the direction of your car and how far away it is”. So now you have a way of remembering where you park. It is available at the App Store for about $0.99.

This is not the first time you hear us talking about augmented reality and it surely won’t be the last time that we will mention it.
And now you’ll be able to try augmented reality for yourself if you happen to have an iPhone ready. The Layar augmented reality browser is now available in the App Store and it’s ready to offer you a different perspective on reality. The app uses the iPhone’s camera in order to overlay data on various points of interest. That way you’ll be able to get a lot of information on various attractions around you.
The application is available for free right now but if it becomes popular then a premium, read not free version, will also be developed. Layar works with various third party developers to offer you a lot of new layers. These layers will let offer you lots of details about restaurant, shops, train and bus schedules and more. You’ll just have to install the browser on your iPhone in order to enjoy all that augmented reality!

September is the glorious month when iPhone OS 3.1 will be available and that’s when you can expect augmented reality apps to be available in the App Store. You could certainly do well without augmented reality applications but since they become more and more frequent, why not take advantage of them?
How does exactly augmented reality work? Well these apps will use the camera of your phone to offer you information which overlays onto real-world objects. Unfortunately in order for these apps to work you will need an iPhone 3GS. The iPhone 3G lacks a compass and therefore it will simply not do.
Just check out the video above to get a glimpse of what augmented reality can do with your iPhone 3GS. Excited yet?
