  • It was just announced that all versions of Microsoft’s latest operating system, Windows 7, will be used by OEMs on Intel Atom powered netbook offerings. This comes to us as news after Microsoft lifted the ban they previously had on Windows 7 on such devices.

When the ban was in effect, only the Windows 7 Starter Edition was expected to be run on netbooks which had a 3-applications-running limit. Thankfully, Microsoft scrapped this idea and decided to allow manufactures, as said above, to use all of Windows 7’s versions.

  • MSI will be unveiling a new netbook soon and it is called the MSI Wind U150 Notebook. What makes it so special? The new MSI Wind U150 netbook will make use of touchscreen technology as well as the new Pine Trail Atom platform. The new MSI netbook is expected to be unveiled at the CES.

MSI is hoping to be the first company to land the Pine Trail Atom since Intel has not officially launched the latest Atom processor in the market. The Pine Trail Atom seems to be one of the marquee features of this latest MSI Wind netbook since it reportedly shows improved graphic performance and improved power consumption.

And the other marquee feature is the touchscreen, 10-inch convertible U150 with Windows 7. But before all that happens, MSI will be unveiling the 12” Wind U210 which makes use of the AMD platform. It will be available in two variants: one with Windows XP, 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive retailing for about $379 and another running on Vista Premium for $429.

The U210 will be available in the U.S. this coming September.

  • AMD is ready to make a move in the nettop and all-in-one PC business. The company already has a platform ready to compete against Intel’s Atom platform. The Neo has so far remained pretty quiet but AMD is apparently going to use it in future nettops and all-in-one PCs. Here’s what Bob Grim, AMD’s director of client marketing said:

We’ve known all along that this type of technology would really work well in multiple platforms and multiple types of form factors. These CPUs perform better than the Atom processor, and the graphics are superior. These things… can play Blu-rays, they can play games.

AMD hasn’t revealed any details regarding any future products but we’re suspecting it’s only a matter of time until it does. What would you choose between Intel’s Atom and AMD’s Neo platform?

We can honestly say that we knew this was bound to happen. The minute Intel and Nokia shook hands thinking at the future of mobile devices, people must have started wandering when the first Nokia laptop should arrive. And Nokia is on track with its laptop plans for this year. Together with Intel it will launch an Atom-based netbook sometime in the third quarter of the year, according to the Commercial Times.

The Nokiabook will probably be made by Compal and Quanta, two companies well versed in the netbook-making business. Compal will go even further and create a Qualcomm Snapdragon Nokia smartbook but we don’t have any specific details for any of those future Nokia devices just yet.

  • Intel is thinking about the future of its netbook/nettop platforms and the famous Atom line has a successor. Pine Trail is the new codename that we’ll have to get used to. The platform will use the Pineview processor which also incorporates the memory controller and the GPU. That translates into a lower power consumption which might result in an even more efficient netbook. The Pine Trail platform will only be available in the last quarter of the year so we have a long wait ahead.

  • Intel should get ready for some serious competition in the netbook industry. It looks like NVIDIA has confirmed that the first Ion-based netbooks will be unveiled in June at the Computex trade. Then the very first models available will be shipped as early as July. We’re curious to see who’s going to be the first to develop these new Ion-based netbooks but that’s still a mystery. Key players from the netbook business are going to be involved but we can’t name any names yet. Since Acer has launched its first Ion-based nettop, the AspireRevo, we can only assume that the company is secretly working on Ion netbooks too.

    Acer Aspire One AOD150 Laptop

Here is another flashy netbook option for people who want mobile solutions within their grasps. Offered by Acer, the Acer Aspire One AOD150 is not too flashy and not too dull. It has a good number of features, and it also has the best screen we have ever seen in a netbook, so it gets by on much more than just its good looks.

It’s a 10.2in netbook with a fully featured keyboard. The keys are smaller keys than the ones found on the ASUS Eee PC S101, which means that the Acer is not as wide as the Eee PC. This makes it uncomfortable to type on for long periods of time, but eventually you get used to it. Touch-typists will have no problem using the keyboard as it has a regular QWERTY layout and large shift keys on both the left and right sides.

The Acer Aspire One AOD150 differs a little in layout to the 8.9in Aspire One ZG5, but it’s not a complete overhaul of the original design; it still retains much of the original’s look and feel. The touchpad’s left- and right-click buttons are now located at the bottom of the touchpad, rather than either side of it; it has a teardrop-shaped hinge detail, rather than a circle; and it only has one SD slot, rather than two. In the original Linux-based Aspire One, the second SD slot was used to supplement the solid-state drive in the unit.

There is a 160GB, 4200rpm hard drive in the Acer Aspire One AOD150, which is a massive step up from the 8GB solid-state drive found in the original Aspire One. The configuration of the Acer Aspire One AOD150 also includes a 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU, 1GB of RAM and Intel GMA950 graphics.

The unit looks great and feels good. It doesn’t get overly warm, so it probably won’t be uncomfortable after long periods of use on your lap. The touchpad feels smooth and is accurate, but we wish there was a physical distinction between the two buttons.

Essentially the concept phone would basically be a more powerful MID capable of doing more stuff than your regular home phone. The phone will most likely look like a touchscreen nettop running on Mobiln and making calls for you. When will we see a prototype?

Here’s what Intel’s Atom phone should feature:

    • Dimensions • 5.4 inch x 9.6 inch (137.3 mm x 243.7 mm)
    • Processor • Intel Atom processor Z5XX 533 MHz FSB
    • Chipset • Intel System Controller Hub (SCH) US15W
    • Supported operating systems • Moblin
    • Memory • 1 GB DDR2 533 MHz SODIMM
    • Storage • 8 GB Compact Flash• 1 SATA optional
    • Display/Video/Graphics • 8.9-inch resistant-touch LCD (16:9 aspect ratio LVDS)
    • Audio • HD audio, up to 4 audio streams
    • I/O connectivity • 2 SDIO/MMC serial interfaces • RS232 • 1 PCI Express port • 6 USB (5 external, 1 internal) • 2X RJ45 (LAN and PC) • 1 HDMI • 1 RJ22 • 3.0 mm audio jacks – mic input headset output • 2.0 mm phone headset jack • Internal speakers and mic
    • Modular options • Wi-Fi/Bluetooth • USB port (DECT FXO) • (Camera optional) • 1 mini PCIe slot

  • Intel seems to really enjoy these netbooks. Besides the Atom processors, the company has neatly created a personal Linux OS, especially designed for the Atom processor. Moblin is the name of this modified Linux version and you should give it a chance if you have a netbook around. It might replace that Windows XP you might be using currently.

Moblin is available as an alpha release for now but we’re hoping it will grow to a final version. The software was built off of the GNOME Mobile platform and will use the Clutter and GUPnP open source technologies which are also properties of Intel. Let’s see what manufacturer will offer the first netbook with Moblin on it.
