VIA OpenBook, a Dream or Reality

Ok, so I have gone through this video. No surprises there. We have a possible contender to Asus Eee 900 or the HP 2133 Mini-Note. We have some specs but not everything we would like to know. We have VIA but we don’t have a manufacturer.

Basically if you want to build your own cheap laptop, all you have to do is get buy a processor and motherboard from VIA and then get all the info and schematics they have released freely in order to assemble your first laptop.

I wonder if there’s any company that will pick up on VIA’s lead to manufacture this Eee wannabe to a larger scale. Time will tell. For now I go with the Asus versions.

What do you think?

Despite Asus Eee’s ever growing popularity I have always felt unconvinced by the concept. It’s a cheap and highly portable device, I’ll give you that, but it needs some more work done here and there. (more…)

After its announcement a month ago, the new 8.9-inch Asus Eee PC 900, successor to the original Eee PC 701, is now released in Hong Kong. Details and specs of the diminutive notebook PC have also been officially announced by Asus. People have been expecting an Intel Atome processor, but it looks like it’s going to be the same Celeron one the original carried. The new Eee PC 900 now has a 1024 x 600 pixels resolution so users can now view a whole A4 page without the need to scroll horizontally like before.

Aside from its noticeable increase in screen size, it also features the new FingerGlide, which is an interactive touchpad allowing users to zoom in and out of pics and scroll through documents in a jiffy. Eee PC 900 comes with a 12GB SSD storage for Windows units and 20GB SSD storage for Linux ones. Both units will be sold for US$499. You can check out the release dates here.
