Those of you still playing with a Windows Mobile handset will be happy to know that Microsoft has decided to upgrade its Windows Mobile Marketplace. Starting today the store can be accessed from any browser not only from your mobile browser.
Other updates include enhanced security and anti-piracy measures not that we care too much about those. But the fact that the Marketplace can now be accessible from any browser and that apps can be downloaded a lot easier straight on your PC right now is definitely great news. Here’s what the official blog had to say about the new Marketplace:
While we’ve heard great feedback on the Marketplace experience on Windows phones, sometimes people just want the benefits of a shopping on a PC. Starting today, Windows phone customers can browse, buy and download applications online at the Windows Marketplace for Mobile site. The selected applications are delivered wirelessly to the customer’s Windows phone and install the next time the Windows Marketplace client runs on the device. This creates another way for customers to easily find and purchase applications and gives developers a whole new level of exposure.
How would you describe your Marketplace experience so far?

Apple’s App Store has established yet another record. We’ve seen the store reach one billion downloads followed quickly by the two million mark. And now the App Store has reached another remarkable number. The store houses at this time 100,000 applications which is a record in the business and now the number has been officially recognized by Apple. Everyone else is trailing way back and it will be almost impossible for the App Store to be surpassed by any other similar adventure. We’re probably going to see even more records get established as there are more than 34 million iPhones out there, not to mention the iPod touches sold so far by Cupertino. We’ve showed you lots of App Store apps here and there are many more interesting apps to show you, so stay tuned. The third billion download is probably just around the corner.
What’s your favorite iPhone app?

Unlike the Apple’s native App Store app, this doesn’t have a “top” list based on overall downloads. Chorus is designed to work in chorus with apps that have been recommended by other Chorus users.

It was announced today that the app store for the Symbian platform, entitled Horizon, has today gone live in beta form. There isn’t much to choose from right now with only 50 mobile apps currently available but the Symbian Foundation promise thousands of choices in 2010.

It seems like Apple started the run for app stores with the success of the iPhone apps, and after Google launching a store for the Wave, it is time for the Symbian Foundation to launch an application store named Symbian Horizon.
The plan for the store was announced on July 2009 and at this time Symbian has gathered over 50 applications, and they are helping developers by signing and submitting the software to target mobile application stores all around the world. At the moment there are 5 stores that support the Symbian Horizon: Ovi Store by Nokia, Samsung Applications Store, AT&T’s MEdia Mall, China Mobile’s Mobile Market, and Sony Ericsson’s PlayNow arena.
Lee Williams, Director of Symbian Foundation, comments:
Tags: App Store, mobile, Mobile Software, Symbian Foundation, symbian horizonWe recognize that developers face many challenges in bringing their products to market on Symbian devices. In particular, the diversity of application stores in our ecosystem increases the burden on developers by requiring multiple submission and review processes. But this diversity can also offer an advantage over competitors’ closed systems, where applications sometimes receive arbitrary or commercially motivated rejections. Symbian Horizon retains this advantage while reducing the burden by becoming a conduit to multiple stores, helping developers reach the largest global mobile market in the world more efficiently.

The Internet is buzzin’ about Google Wave despite the fact that only a select number of individuals, and their friends, are actually able to use the service.
We kind of know what it does, we kind of know how it works, but today Google told us something we didn’t know; it’s going to feature it’s own app store off sorts. That’s right, developers will actually be able to produce Wave extensions and upload them to the store from which users can purchase said extensions.
It’s a cool feature, but we’ll have to wait until Google announces more like how much the typical extension will cost until we pass final judgment.

If you ask me, I guess it was about time for Microsoft to stand up for itself and take a proper hit at Apple. And this time they have managed to come up with a funny video too. The video is a great response to Apple’s “Get a Mac” campaign.
Microsoft is targeting the App Store and it’s making fun of some of those ridiculous apps that can be downloaded to iPhones and iPod touches right now. In this rejected Windows Marketplace video Microsoft makes two important points. First of all the App Store is filled with unnecessary apps and second, Apple is well knows for the way it choose to approve or banish apps from its store.
But after we’ve had a couples of laughs and shared it with our friends, we still have to acknowledge the fact that Apple’s App Store is way better than Microsoft’s Marketplace, at least for now. And Microsoft is surely wishing for a Marketplace filled with at least half the ridiculous apps found in the App Store! You see, Microsoft, you actually need to perform better than the competition in order for any funny video to really work!

Not too long ago we let you know that Griffin’s latest iTrip would ship alongside an app controller that will be offered on the App Store.
Well, it seems that to make such a thing easier to consumers Apple has snuck in the feature that will allow connected accessories to prompt you if you want to download the associated app, as you can see above. This is compared to having to sort through the seemingly endless list of apps looking for the correct one.
Let’s see what other accessory manufacturers utilize this feature.

The last we heard of the Facebook version 3.0 iPhone/iPod touch app was towards the beginning of July. Today, it was announced that the update has officially hit the App Store with some intersting features.
What you’ll notice first upon updating the software is that the entire UI has been reworked to allow for easier browsing. Another important update is that it features a built-in browser so you can view links posted by your buddies right in the application without having to open Safari.
We’ve included the full list of updates after the break but the best way to experience the new Facebook app is to get it yourself.

Google’s Google Voice is currently a very big deal in the mobile business. Apple has rejected it from the App Store and the FCC has started to ask questions about the ban. We have already shown you what Apple, AT&T and Google have responded to the FCC and we feel like we have to remind you that nobody seems to be guilty for what happened to the app. And now we came accros the video above which does a quick recap of the whole debacle. This goes to show that everyone noticed this Google vs Apple (and AT&T) scandal and I have a feeling we’re going to see more of it soon. Will the FCC offer a solution to the whole problem or will Google find a smart way to give iPhone users access to its Google Voice? What’s your opinion? Who’s side are you going to take? Would you use Google Voice on your iPhone if available right away? Or do you agree with Apple?

I am sure that Apple’s conduct within the App Store isn’t surprising anyone at this point. After the whole Google Voice scandal, Apple does it again. This time is the iStat application. The app has been initially allowed in the App Store, but now Apple decided to reject it, particularly after Bjango launched a new update for its customers.
If you happen to own iStat, don’t upgrade when given the chance to do so. You’ll be sorry:
Where did ‘Free Memory’ go?
iStat’s Free Memory function was removed at Apple’s request.
This decision was completely out of our hands. Please note that all other apps with Free Memory appear to have been removed or updated without their Free Memory function too.
This was not taken lightly—we examined our choices, taking a lot of public feedback on board. We apologise [sic] for any inconvenience this may have caused and we do not plan to remove any other features from iStat.
If you choose (and you haven’t already updated), you can continue to run iStat version 1.0. You’ll miss out on new features, but you’ll get to keep the Free Memory feature.
We are very committed to ensuring iStat is the best iPhone and iPod Touch monitoring tool. Free Memory has been removed, but a lot of other useful features will be added in its place.
What’s wrong with Free Memory then? We’ll be waiting for Apple or the FCC or whoever comes up with a good answer to enlighten us!

We’ve known for a while now that Microsoft is planning some sort of application delivery method for their Windows Mobile handsets but the same could not be said for the Zune HD. However, if the above videos is anything to go by, Ballmer and his boys may be working on an app store for the Zune, too.
The video comes to us from a Qik user by the name of Matthew Akin who took the video at a recent Best Buy Zune HD preview. As you can see, in the Marketplace there is an Apps link, but what could it possibly lead to?

After we’ve seen yesterday that AT&T is not at fault for the rejection of Google Voice from the App Store and that the app is, in fact, not rejected but under a long review, it’s now Google’s turn to respond. And I don’t want to spoil it all for you but Google is also not at fault for the rejection of Google Voice. Did I say rejection? I meant review of course. At the rate we’re going it looks like nobody is to blame here so the only entity left here to question is the FCC. Maybe the FCC should also respond to itself clearing its name regarding the Google Voice ban. I meant to say, of course, review instead of ban!
Unfortunately we can’t see the conversations Google had with AT&T and Apple. Those would have been really interesting to read and therefore they have been redacted…
If you’re willing to give it a try, follow the link to read why Google’s Google Voice is a good application for humanity and shouldn’t be in any way thrown out of the App Store world. And by thrown out, I do honestly mean reviewed for a much-longer-than-necessary time.
Coming soon, at least one can hope, the FCC ruling in this matter!

By now you should be familiar with the whole scandal. Apple banned Google’s Google Voice application from the App Store and the FCC decided to get involved to find out why that has happened. And AT&T, blamed by others of being the muscle behind Apple’s decision, has issued a response email to the FCC. And it looks like AT&T “had no role in any decision by Apple to not accept the Google Voice application.” How many of you expected that folks? Now that AT&T is in the clear, we’re waiting for Apple to think outside the box on this one. And let’s see what the FCC will have to respond to this response.
