Two weeks ago, we covered how many “explicit” apps were being removed from the App Store en masse. Well, that didn’t really last long, and it would appear that the App Store is doing a new kind of purge.
This time, the target is WiFi Scanning apps. One of them is WiFi-Where, an app that allowed users to find Wi-Fi hotspots. This app, designed by Softpedia, is apparently one of many of its type to be deleted. Why does Apple want to get rid of these all of a sudden? Who knows.
I’ll try and cover this purge, like I did with the other one, with daily updates.

It seems that the reasons Apple is coming up with to reject App Store applications is growing every day. Their latest reason? “Minimal user functionality”. The app in question is DuckPhone, an application that would let users have their iPhones or iPod touches quacking like a duck. Sounds cute, right? Not to Apple as they felt the need to send the app’s developer, Nick Bonatsakis, the following letter:
“Dear Atlantia Software LLC,
We’ve reviewed your application DuckPhone and we have determined that this application contains minimal user functionality and will not be appropriate for the App Store.
If you would like to share it with friends and family, we recommend you review the Ad Hoc method on the Distribution tab of the iPhone Developer Portal for details on distributing this application among a small group of people of your choosing or if you believe that you can add additional user functionality to DuckPhone we encourage you to do so and resubmit it for review.
Sincerely,
iPhone App Review Team”
Now what about all the fart apps on the App Store? Are they getting pulled too?

We’ve been reporting a lot on Apple’s crackdown on explicit apps, which began with the ending of Wobble. (By the way, it’s back up again.)
I think I have been posting on this every day, and so I thought I would complete my week with the reason for this anti-explicit crackdown from Apple. According to my source, Apple was concerned that the presence of explicit apps would create a spirit of the App store which could scare off more conservative customers.
I guess it makes sense, but there is a thing about giving people what they want, even if you don’t like what you’re giving them.
Okay, have a good weekend, and I probably won’t cover this again unless some earth-shattering development occurs.

There are numerous stories about how much money people have made off of iPhone apps but have you ever wondering just how many of those apps you don’t have to pay for? I don’t know about you guys, but I have a hard time purchasing any apps over 1 dollar.
Well, analytical firm Distimo has recently done a study to see how many of the applications in the various app stores are free and how many you have to pay for. Their findings state that the Android marketplace has 57% free applications while Apple’s store only has 25% free.
Of course this is most likely due to the fact that the iPhone’s App Store has a much larger number of apps but it’s nice to see some cold hard facts regardless.

Here is a cool new game you can consider for your iPhone or iPod Touch. The Stinger Table Hockey has been released, giving the hockey-loving mobile phone users something to look forward to. Put your fingers to the test as you battle in many game modes for this rough and tumble sport.
You can play against the computer or even with some other friends using WiFi or Bluetooth connectivity. The Stinger Table Hockey game app is now available at the iTunes app store for $1.99.

Here is another controversial app that should single out the weird process of approving iPhone apps over at the app store. After being available at the iTunes app store for some months now, the Wobble iBoobs app has been taken out. And as you would guess, some folks found it offensive even if there is nothing significant from it.
Depending on how you look at it, the Wobble iBoobs allows the user to select an image of your choice, like a woman in a bikini. The boobs are marked with the app after which the app allows you to wobble them with each shake. Seems harmless and certainly not pornographic at all. After earning $300,000 during its availability, this is another instance of Apple’s inconsistent approval process. Geez!

People who are making use of the iPhone Jailbreak software and have an Apple ID may want to back up a bit. Apple seems to be keeping track of your every move as evidenced by this iPhone Hacker named Sherif Hashim. Hashim discovered a crack in the iPhone OS 3.1.3 which can unlock the baseband 05.12.01 some time ago but was surprised to find a message coming from Apple informing him that his Apple ID has been disabled due to security reasons.
Apparently there are a lot of people out there who are turning to the jailbreak version for iPhones but you can be rest assured that Apple is not letting you off the hook that easily. In fact, it looks they are cracking down on them. Unless you want some trouble, be wary of the iPhone jailbreak software. You have been warned!

The approval process of an application to join the iPhone App Store has seemed to become faster, because after the iPad announcement they have added 10,000 applications – in only 16 days.
With that being said, the iPhone App Store now has over 27,000 books, more 28,000 games, and another few thousand applications which makes the total go up to 150,000. Taking in consideration the total, a research company named Distimo has concluded that 75% of those apps are paid, and the rest – 25% – are free.
It seems like the iPad announcement was a good move by Apple to boost their app store… right?

Considering the App Store is being absolutely flooded with downloads, it is the perfect opportunity to get some advertisements out there. And, considering the fact that it has built in GPS, it’s the perfect opportunity for advertisement providers to provide some incredibly targeted ads.
Well, it seems that if app developers are using Core Location just to provide targeted ads, Apple is going to reject the app and ask them to remove the call. This is quite unfortunate for developers looking to monetize their apps further and probably out of the blue considering users can actually reject the invitation to let the app use their location.

My Source for this story says that the idea of a Google app store is “unconfirmed”, sort of like this Google tablet in this picture.
However, I just can’t help but think “Google app store” and say “of course that will happen”. I mean, how much has Apple made in their cut of the App store, right? I mean, doesn’t BlackBerry have an app store? Man, everyone needs to have an app store these days.
So, unless anyone wants to dispute me, welcome to the App Store business, Google. Hope it works out for you.

It would appear that if you want to make some successful mobile device, then you have to have an app store. We all know that it worked on Apple, and BlackBerry has one as well.
Amazon is now trying to get in the App game as they are opening up the Kindle for apps. They are planning on launching a beta version of the app program next month, but it is not known when it will be fully available to everyone.

It is not surprising to find Apple dominating the app market in 2009 and the figures further support that claim. Apple claimed a larger share of the paid mobile app space, selling about 99.4% of the $4.2 billion market all by its lonesome.
And should the trend carry on to 2010, it will not be surprising if the numbers flourish all the more. And should Apple release another tablet, expect the numbers to soar further in their favor as well!

I was introduced to this app by Intelius at Pepcom, and its one that is a long time coming. Imagine going to a bar and meeting someone for the first time, before he/she asks you out, you can actually check to see that his or her story is true.
All you need to do is enter a name, phone number, or address, and you can accurately see:
Sleaze detector: Check for criminal convictions and sex offenses.
Money: Instant results about property ownership and home details.
Compatibility: Learn about astrological information and birth date.
Interests: A Summary of social and professional networks.
Living situation: Find out if they live alone, with parents, or with a spouse (uh-oh).
You might want to duck into the restroom to search for this information, and then afterward, you can give Mr. or Mrs. Right or Wrong your answer. You might also receive a question of: “did you just datecheck me?”

Apple has today sent out a press release that lets us know over 3 billion apps have been downloaded from the App Store since it was launched less than 18 months ago.
In the words of Apple CEO Steve Jobs:
“Three billion applications downloaded in less than 18 months is like nothing we’ve ever seen before. The revolutionary App Store offers iPhone and iPod touch users an experience unlike anything else available on other mobile devices, and we see no signs of the competition catching up anytime soon.”
But what’s the real reason that Apple is letting us know this? Because Google is expected to announce their own phone today, of course.

Don’t look now but Samsung is getting its own app store thanks to SK Telecoms. The Samsung App Store is expected to open by December 18 and will operate as a “Shop Inside a Shop” concept. There won’t be a lot of apps available in the first couple of days but you can get some familiar entertainment app titles like SimCity, Ferrari GT and Monopoly. At least it’s a start!

While it’s still not on par with Apple’s App Store the Android Market has today reached a notable milestone: 20,000 apps. Of those 20,000 apps, 62.2% of them are free and 37.8% of them cost money.
To put that into perspective, the App Store has over 100,000 apps with 77% of them costing money, 23% of them free.
So who will reign supreme? Well, we’ll have to see how it plays out but with Apple’s lead over Google, it’s going to hard for the Android market to catch up.

It’s no secret that app stores are utter gold mines. We learned this from Apple and the introduction of their App Store for the iPhone/iPod touch. Several other camps followed suit like Android, Windows Mobile and more.
Now, the guys behind the Meizu M8 are gearing up to launch the MyStore, which you can see demoed in the above video. There isn’t much information regarding what apps we can see at launch but we do know that the firmware adding the app store is to be launched later this month and that Meizu will split revenue with developers 30/70. Not bad.
