HTC Hero owners have been promised that Android 2.0 is coming soon. But don’t get too excited, folks, as that update hasn’t arrived yet. In case you have noticed Sprint’s OTA update then rest assured it’s not the Éclair. In fact the new firmware that has been announced, version 1.56.651.2, will only fix a few bugs but it will not bring any Android 2.0 your way.

The firmware update is available for download right now and it will solve that SMS issue that causes battery usage while also offering a Daylight Saving Time fix. Just go to “System Update” on your Hero and get the update yourself.

  • Besides the fact that Dell will launch an Android phone in the near future, the company will also release an MID next year. And it looks like Dell will be partnering up with AT&T to launch a whole mini-tablet series.

Screen size is said to vary between 4- to 12-inches and they are likely to come with features like 3G, WiFi connectivity, a 5-megapixel camera, dual LED flash, microSD support and a 1,300mAh battery. We don’t have actual confirmations and we have no idea when these MIDs will be launched. But at least we do know they exist so we’ll be looking for more info for you in the following months.

  • Android is seriously sweeping the nation, and so it is no surprise that MOTO is looking to put it in their new MID. This device, known as the AMP (Android Media Platform) comes in three forms:

The first is a 5-inch version that will be equipped with a front-facing 8 Megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, multi-touch display, TI OMAP3430 processor, plus 256MB worth of flash with SD card reader. The 10.4 inch version also has the 8 Megapixel camera, multi-touch capacity, and it also has GPS and a 3 Megapixel camera on the back. Believe it or not, there is also plans for a 30 inch version.

All three of these should be out “by early 2010″, but there is no word so far on the price.

The HTC Hero will soon fade away from our minds as the Motorola Droid will be the hottest phone in town. But that doesn’t mean that HTC will let that happen without a fight. The company has confirmed that Android 2.0 will be coming soon to HTC Hero owners. Here’s what HTC had to say:

Yes, we are working on an Eclair update for the HTC Hero. Because Eclair is a significantly enhanced release, it will require some time to update Sense for this new version of the Android OS. Please be patient while we work to provide you with a tightly integrated experience like the one you are already enjoying on your Hero.

That magic HTC Sense UI is also going to be ported to Android 2.0 in the near future and all the Hero versions out there will get it. Just check back with your carrier for more information once Eclair becomes available from HTC.

Well will Android go next? In case you are also wondering about the next Google mobile OS version then we have a sneak peak for you. Android 2.0 codenamed “Donut” has been spotted. The Donut was demoed at the I/O keynote today and those attending have seen the Android Search in action. This next search version in Android 2.0 will let you search either online or on your local machine for stuff. There’s even going to be a text-to-speech API available which will let developers integrate Google’s Voice Search in any application. Google will surely add more features to it by the time the Donut becomes available so we’ll be monitoring it for you. In the mean time you can always enjoy the Cupcake.

Not to be left off the Google OS wagon, Sony Ericsson has now announced that it wants a piece of the Android cake too.  And not just a Cupcake, but a Donut.  The company already has its fingers in quite a few pies already with Symbian and Windows Mobile handsets, and the addition of an Android 2.0 devices to its future lineup should dispel any rumors that it is thinking about bringing down the number of operating systems on its smartphones.  According to Peter Ang, Vice President of Marketing, Asia Pacific, the reason for the leap to Android 2.0 bypassing the current 1.5 Cupcake is that the 2.0 version “will provide more multimedia support” than the previous versions.  By the way, did everyone on T-Mobile receive their update yet?
