MSI will be unveiling a new netbook soon and it is called the MSI Wind U150 Notebook. What makes it so special? The new MSI Wind U150 netbook will make use of touchscreen technology as well as the new Pine Trail Atom platform. The new MSI netbook is expected to be unveiled at the CES.

MSI is hoping to be the first company to land the Pine Trail Atom since Intel has not officially launched the latest Atom processor in the market. The Pine Trail Atom seems to be one of the marquee features of this latest MSI Wind netbook since it reportedly shows improved graphic performance and improved power consumption.

And the other marquee feature is the touchscreen, 10-inch convertible U150 with Windows 7. But before all that happens, MSI will be unveiling the 12” Wind U210 which makes use of the AMD platform. It will be available in two variants: one with Windows XP, 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive retailing for about $379 and another running on Vista Premium for $429.

The U210 will be available in the U.S. this coming September.

AMD is ready to make a move in the nettop and all-in-one PC business. The company already has a platform ready to compete against Intel’s Atom platform. The Neo has so far remained pretty quiet but AMD is apparently going to use it in future nettops and all-in-one PCs. Here’s what Bob Grim, AMD’s director of client marketing said:

We’ve known all along that this type of technology would really work well in multiple platforms and multiple types of form factors. These CPUs perform better than the Atom processor, and the graphics are superior. These things… can play Blu-rays, they can play games.

AMD hasn’t revealed any details regarding any future products but we’re suspecting it’s only a matter of time until it does. What would you choose between Intel’s Atom and AMD’s Neo platform?

Now don’t get all scared/excited folks! This is just a rumor circling the web today. It seems that Apple is considering replacing NVIDIA chips in its future Macs as it looks like negotiations between the two companies have come to a halt. Is AMD/ATI stepping in? Are we going to see Apple work with Intel? Are the new Macs going to have Core i7 chips under the hood? Is that even possible at this point? Right now we don’t have any official position from neither Apple nor NVIDIA. We can assume that Apple is punishing NVIDIA for the recent chip defects spotted in new Macs. And considering the fact that the Cupertino-based company has been hiring lots of former AMD graphics employees we can also assume that something’s happening and the future of MacBooks might be totally different.

  • Guess how much will Intel have to pay to the European Commission in fine for violating antitrust laws? Oh wait, I just told you dind’t I? Well how about that then? Intel will have to pay $1.45 billion after giving rebates to PC makers buying Intel chips while asking them to drop the chips from the competition. I guess AMD is unofficially very happy about the whole predicament. Undoubtedly Intel will appeal the decision but in the end it will surely have to pay an impressive fine.

  • NVIDIA Planning x86 CPU

AMD’s loss is NVIDIA’s gain. That is perhaps how you can sum up this report which shows the possible jump of NVIDIA into the netbook CPU market scene. NVIDIA executive, Michael Hara, vice president of investor relations at NVIDIA, announced last week that the company may develop an x86 CPU targeted at the netbooks and mobile Internet devices (MID) market.

The move would place NVIDIA in direct competition with AMD in CPU industry, as well the GPU industry. And the move would also do little to improve the already sour relations between NVIDIA and Intel, the mobile CPU industry’s top player.

When asked when that “someday” might be, he responded that he couldn’t discuss specifics, but a mobile x86 NVIDIA CPU may be coming in two to three years. NVIDIA is also still deciding whether to develop the potential CPU internally or license its development to another firm. Derek Perez, an NVIDIA spokesman, says no hard decisions have been made on this yet and that NVIDIA is still exploring its options. If NVIDIA does choose to do its own development, it will likely have to purchase a company with rights to key x86 technologies.

  • The HP Pavilion dv2 is going to be talked about these following days. It’s the first notebook which is going to run on that AMD Athlon Neo platform we’ve discussed earlier today.

The Pavilion dv2 will boast a 12.1 inch LED-backlit display and it will weigh just under four pounds. We’ll find a 2.5 inch hard drive inside it and you can choose from the 160GB base model all the way up to the 500GB model. Optional Blu-ray is available and as for ports we’re going to find three USB ports, an HDMI port, a 5-in-1 memory card reader, a VGA and an Ethernet port.

The dv2 will arrive in espresso or moonlight, or black or white if you have to ask. What we need now is a launch day and an exact price although we suspect this laptop will cost anywhere from $500 to $1,000.

  • One of the big names still absent from the flourishing netbook business is AMD. The company has decided not to enter this niche yet but it’s definitely reconsidering its options. We’re not going to see AMD in our next netbooks just yet but AMD has decided to release the Athlon Neo platform for ultrathin notebooks.

AMD is thinking about notebooks which have bigger screens than netbooks but are still ultraportable and fairly cheap. AMD will use its new platform for notebooks in the 11 to 13 inches range.

The platform featuring the 1.6GHz Neo is said to handle better multiple applications better than Intel Atoms and it will be bundle with an ATI Radeon graphic card, either the X1250 or the HD3410.

One of the first laptops to use the new platform is a 12-inch Pavilion dv2 from HP which is thin and ultraportable and it will be priced under $1,000. Isn’t AMD a little bit too late to release a new notebook platform?

AMD Goes to Town with Phenom II

AMD seems ready to unveil its new processor, the Phenom II. It’s said to be a quad-core, 45nm chip which will support both DDR2 and DDR3 and it will come at 3GHz and 2.8GHz. A 65nm version will also be available. The chips are supposed to arrive at the upcoming CES which means we’ll get more juicy details by then. If you’re wondering about prices we know so far that the 3GHz 45nm chip costs $275 while the 2.8GHz 45nm chip costs $235. Any hot computers care to wear one of them?

AMD Says No to Netbook Business

In case you are waiting for the first nebook to pack any other processor than the current Intel Atom than you are in for a surprise. AMD won’t enter the netbook business. Why do they want to do such a thing? Well CEO Dirk Meyer is simply ignoring it:

We’re ignoring the Netbook phenomenon—just thinking about PC form factors above that form factor.

AMD says that people, dissatisfied with them netbooks have turned to AMD computers. Hmmm, the grapes might be sour for AMD. I am surely no netbook lover, but I can count the million units sold so far. And manufacturers keep making more.

AMD is going to make some kind of announcement tomorrow. I don’t know what’s going to happen. Is it good? Is it bad? Is it ugly?

AMD’s President and CEO Dirk Meyer is going to make a “significant corporate announcement”. I am really curious to see what it is. According to recent rumors it’s a breakup of some sort and the Wall Street Journal seems to confirm that hypothesis. Stick around and I’ll tell you everything about AMD’s mid life crisis tomorrow!

    USB 3.0 Features Revealed

We’re waiting anxiously for the USB 3.0 to be included in most motherboards and other gadgets. We know Intel has been studying the matter hard enough to give us a viable solution. AMD and NVIDIA have been also waiting impatiently for such technology to be shared or else. (more…)

Intel Closer to Finishing USB 3.0

Are we going to have USB 3.0 ports available inside the upcoming laptops? We’ve been waiting for them for quite a while.

Intel has draft 0.9 ready of the USB 3.0 specification for manufacturers like AMD and NVIDIA. That means that all future motherboards will have offer the same technology so there won’t by any incompatibilities for any of the users.

The move follows AMD and NVIDIA’s threat to develop their version of USB 3.0 if Intel fails to disclose their work on it. Intel excuse was that they simply were not ready yet and they didn’t want to release any unfinished work.

Well than, Intel, AMD or NVIDIA, when am I going to get my USB 3.0 already?
