In-flight WiFi is more and more popular. Surfing the web while flying to your favorite destination is a great way to pass the time. And U.S. Airways has just decided to offer the services starting next year. The airliner has partnered up with Aircell to offer GoGo Inflight Internet service to its domestic A321 customers. GoGo Internet will be available sometime early next year and everyone willing to pay anywhere from $5.95 to $12.95 for it will be able to go online from their smartphone or laptop.

Do you fly too much? Is it work-related or do you do it for fun? Well if you feel the need to surf the Internet while flying to your next destination you should check Aircell’s offers available for selected Virgin America, AirTran, Delta and America Airlines flights.
Aircell has announced two new Gogo plans for its customers: the Flight Pass for short trips and the 24-Hour Pass for those of you that fly across the ocean and back a lot.
The Flight Pass will cost you $5.95 for 90 minutes of in-flight WiFi connectivity while the 24-Hour Pass will cost $12.95. If you happen to fly almost daily then there’s a 30-day unlimited pass available for $49.95. I guess that at least some flight attendants will consider buying some cheap netbooks and getting this later plan for those interminable flights. After all why not surf the web while everyone else is sleeping?

Using mobile phones and gadgets are normally prohibited on flights. However, we have been seeing a new evolution in this area as some airlines have been allowing it.
As far as bizjets are concerned, the need for some solution to control this area is a need and apparently SafeCell has come up with one which they have launched globally.
The SafeCell intellectual property is a patent application and proof of concept to allow a mobile phone to be operated safely in-flight, by disabling a mobile phones primary transmitter and communicating via the mobile phones auxiliary communications port i.e. Bluetooth or USB SafeCell communicates with the ground via existing low cost satellite networks providing an inexpensive in-flight mobile phone messaging solution.

Surfing the Internet while flying to your new destination seems to be in fashion lately. One more airline is getting ready to launch WiFi services and it seems it has partnered up with Yahoo. Southwest have equipped a Row 44 and it will equip three more planes next month. Yahoo will offer the in-flight homepage together with “destination relevant content.” The service will be tested in the following months as soon as the FCC will deliver its OK stamp.

We’ve just heard how Delta is ready to launch it’s WiFi service across its fleet and it looks like they aren’t the only ones to launch communications services for their passengers.
British bmi has decided to play with in-flight communication. It will go through a six month trial of OnAir voice service without voice. Passengers flying in that A320 from London to Moscow and back will be able to text messages while in the air. Will bmi offer full voice support in the future? WiFi? We’ll be there to report it!

We’ve seen various other companies offer WiFi during flight and probably in a couple of years all planes out there will have a fast Internet connection for you. Delta will initiate its new service in 2009 and WiFi will be available on shuttle flights. In due time all 330 planes in their domestic flight will be WiFi friendly. $10 hours is what you have to pay for 3 hours of access and $13 for flights over 3 hours. Too much you say? Yes, but you get to surf while flying.

Did you get used to going online while flying or not really? More and more airline companies are trying to offer the service to customer but none of them has gone full fleet WiFi yet.
Virgin America is the first one to have all its planes upgraded to be WiFi ready. It’s Gogo in-flight Internet service will go beta on November 22nd. Yes, it’s the same day YouTube will offer live streaming.
Besides Internet browsing you will get cash-less ordering of food and beverages, big behind-the-seat TV screens, USB/Ethernet and power ports and over 3000 MP3 at every seat. What do you think? Will you fly Virgin? Will it cost a lot more to fly Virgin than usual? The company will finish all beta tests before Spring 2009 so you have plenty of time to test it and report on its performance.

Here’s another Airline company that is adapting to our technology world. We’ve seen recently how United Airlines have started to offer iPod and iPhone support for their top transatlantic customers. Delta is taking one more step into the future as they are going to allow domestic air travelers departing from New York La Guardia airport to board using their virtual boarding passes stored in their smartphones instead of regular paper boarding passes.
Isn’t that cool? All you need is a digital boarding pass downloaded from Delta and stored in your phone’s memory, an ID to match the person you took the cell phone from and you’re going to be scanned in. All aboard! Oh my, but is it safe? Seriously speaking, with all the safety that’s in place when it comes to flying in the USA, I am sure safety measures will be in place to prevent any hacking or misuse of this new system. After all Continental Airlines and Northwest have started using similar procedures earlier this year.
And this system might just save some trees as we will not be printing that many paper boarding passes. Although pollution from manufacturing those smartphones needed would eventually kill some of the trees we saved before. Well eventually this way of boarding planes will be available in more and more airports around the world in the future.

Frequent fliers with United Airlines can plug their iPods or iPhones to a special 30-pin cable which will deliver 15.4 video to a screen situated in the seat in front of you. You need three things: a first class or business ticket, an iPhone or iPod and a transatlantic destination.

Business Class on a redesigned Airbus A340-500 from New York to Singapore starting yesterday and from Los Angeles to Singapore in the future will have iPod and iPhone support for passengers.
What’s the catch? Well you need to buy an iPod and an iPhone first, pack it with you when flying to and from Singapore and then get a Business Class ticket. Lots of money right? Well yes but if you are a frequent flyer and you have to be in Singapore for a certain period of time, you might try one of those tickets. Maybe your company will cover the costs!
