Dell’s slimmest laptop so far, the Adamo XPS, has posed again for the camera. We still don’t know if Dell is ever going to launch the laptop officially but it would be pretty interesting to see it in action. We’re still curious to see what kind of battery Dell would fit into a case that’s just 9.99mm thick. Who would want a laptop with a poor battery just because it’s the slimmest in the world? Would you buy a Dell Adamo XPS if you had the chance? Or would you go for the MacBook Air instead?

  • Don’t get too excited folks since the Adamo is still an expensive laptop. But Dell decided to reduce its price. That’s a little late considering that Apple has announced cheaper prices for its MacBook, including the direct competitor of the Adamo, the MacBook Air.

Dell is offering you an impressive $500 off the original prices. The cheapest Adamo is now available for just $1,499 while the most expensive is going for $2,299 after the price cut. Still expensive? I told you so!

    WWDC 2009: New MacBook Air

Sure you could always choose one of its direct competitors, the Adamo from Dell or one of the X-Slim laptops from MSI, but for those of you with a bigger wallet, the Air is probably the best way to go.

Apple decided to offer everyone a $300/$700 price drop depending on what model you choose but the MacBook Air it’s still expensive with prices starting at $1,499. The cheapest version will offer you a 1.86GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB DDR3 RAM, a 9400M graphics card and a 120GB HDD. For $1,799 you get a 2.13GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB DDR3 RAM, a 9400M graphics card and a 128GB SSD.

We were waiting and waiting and Dell decided finally to launch its first laptop in the Adamo line. And in case you were expecting a cheap MacBook Air competitor then you should keep on waiting.

This Dell Adamo will cost you about $1,999. You get a 1.2GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB of RAM and a 128GB solid state drive. Yeah, we were expecting more too! The chassis has been built from a single sheet of aluminum, which sounds too familiar. You can pre-order the Dell Adamo today and you’ll get it on March 26. What do you think? Will you get one?

While we’re still waiting for Adamo to compare it with the Air other manufacturers could be already designing even slimmer laptops. And Intel has decided to be prepared for them. The company has announced two new processors made with ultra-thin notebooks in mind. These are the 1.6GHz Core 2 Duo SU9600 and the 1.4GHz Core 2 Solo SU3500. We know they cost $289 and $262 respectively, but we don’t know when they’re coming or what will be the first laptops to use them. But we’re certainly looking forward to see who’s going to be the first manufacturer to snatch them.

  • So we’ve seen the Adamo from Dell. We didn’t have time to start dreaming about it as we had to check out Quanta which is said to have an ultra-thin notebook in the works. Great! We’ll be able to choose one from these two. Is anyone else designing an ultra-thin laptop? We’re all going to replace the Air which we’d love to buy with an Adamo or Quanta laptop, aren’t we? It looks like Quanta’s notebook will have a thickness of only 1 to 2 cm and it will come with an entry-level price. No pictures for now, but we expect them to arrive soon. It was time for Quanta to start making its own computers and it’s a great idea to start with an extra-slim laptop.

So should we expect the Air to become more customer-with-a-budget-friendly?

I guess that all of us were expecting a 15 inch MacBook Air sooner or later. Maybe that’s how Apple is going to respond to all its competitors that started to create Air-like machines.

A Chinese blog is saying that Apple is working on a 15-inch MacBook Air which is set to arrive in the second half of the year. There aren’t any proofs that this will actually happen, but Apple will have to launch some new products later this year. Why not a bigger Air?

Will people buy the new Air? How much will it cost? Let’s not forget that the MacBook Pro is a more than reliable laptop so people might choose it in favor of an Air of the same size.

We’ve shown you the MSI X320 just before CES. It’s a new device from MSI, and although it’s ultraportable, the X320 is a 13.3 inch laptop and not a netbook. The X-Slim series is schedule to arrive in April and fight against the MacBook Air.

Unfortunately for some, the first version will come with an Atom processor inside but MSI will be releasing a higher-end notebook soon which will come with a genuine Pentium processor. That means more power for your work and gaming support. The Atom-based X-Slims will cost just under $1,000 while the Pentium-based X-Slims will cost more than $1,000.

What will you choose? The Air, the Adamo or the X320?

  • Ok guys and gals, since we’re waiting for Dell’s Adamo to arrive and potentially kick the Air’s arse we could use some more competition in this exclusive thin laptop niche. MSI has decided to join the party with its latest laptop which is the ultra-thin, 13.4 inch X-Slim 320. It measures 1.98cm in thickness and it weighs just 2.87 pounds. Will it fit inside an envelope? Probably yes!

The other features you might be interested in are the 4 or 8 cell battery that lasts up to 10 hours, the 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z530 processor, the 1366 x 768 resolution, the maximum 2GB of DDR2 RAM, the 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi support, the Bluetooth and 3.5G network card, the three USB ports, the Ethernet port, the VGA output and the all-in-one card reader.

Did I just make you ponder about getting one? Well it’s going to cost you around $800 when it arrives in the second quarter of 2009. Hopefully CES 2009 will add more details about this thin MSI.

  • There’s this little teaser site with Dell written all over it that says a future laptop is going to be even lighter and thinner than the lightest of them all so far, the MacBook Air. Is Apple ready to get a competitor for that share of the market?

The Adamo might be the future laptop of choice for someone interested in an Air-like experience. What we can say for sure is that Dell’s version of a thin laptop will be way cheaper than Apple’s Air. We have no idea when this notebook is going to be released but we’re hoping 2009.

The new entry-level MacBook Air is not available for shipping just yet. The thin Apple laptop is going to arrive in your home some time after Thanksgiving, and that’s official:

Due to an unexpected delay, we are unable to ship your MacBook Air by the date originally quoted to you. We now anticipate shipping the item by 11/24/08 and delivering by 11/29/08.

In case you ordered one already, you may change the order or cancel it, if you don’t want to wait it out. It looks like the problem is the HDD. All 1.6GHz models equipped with a SATA hard drive are pushed back 2-3 weeks. A 1.6GHz or 1.86GHz Air with a SSD drive will ship as expected within 3-5 days.

    Samsung X360 Laptop Announced

Here’s a Samsung laptop you might be interested in. It’s a 13.3 inch laptop which brags to be ultraslim, ultralight and ultraportable. Kind of like the Air wouldn’t you say? It weighs an amazing 2.8 pounds and it measures from 0.66 inches to 1.2 inches at the bigger end. Since I care more about what’s inside, let’s take a quick look: (more…)

Here’s something we were not exactly expecting. Apple decided to lower the price for both MacBook Air versions. Both models will see a surprising $500 taken off their initial price so better hurry. Although I would wait for the next generation of MacBook Airs which should be coming at some point in the future.
