Acer Announces the Aspire AS5739G

Acer has announced an update to its Aspire line of laptops today and in case you’re looking for a new Acer notebook then the AS5739G is the way to go. One of the most important features of the machine is a Blu-ray player which comes surprisingly cheap. Besides the player the AS5739G will bring you a 15.6-inch LED LCD, a 2.1GHz Core2 Duo processor, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, a 250GB hard drive, fingerprint recognition, multitouch support and Dolby 5.1 sound and a 1GB GeForce GT130 graphics card. And all that for just $750. What do you think? Ready for a Blu-ray Laptop?

Rumor has it Acer is planning a 3D laptop. According to Campbell Kan, VP of Acer’s mobile computing business unit, the 15.6-inch Aspire 3D notebook should arrive at the end of October 2009 and necessitate stereoscopic glasses in order for the 3D effect to be captured.

Initial applications for the visual technology will include 3D gaming and movies, and Acer will preinstall software that, it claims, is able to take 2D footage and convert it into 3D. The hardware has been collectively developed with Wistron, although beyond that Acer have given no indication as to whether it will use NVIDIA’s system.

  • Android is slowly moving from handsets to other gadgets. One such example is Acer’s first Android netbook which is coming soon. Don’t worry though, in case you’re not interested in getting familiar with Android, the netbook will come with a dual-boot feature. That means you will be able to choose between Android or Windows every time you turn it on. Is anyone looking forward to Android laptops? Will you buy such a machine?

Google is expecting anywhere from 18-20 Android phones this year from 8 or 9 different manufacturers. That means our Android universe will just get better. Andy Rubin said all that during the Google I/O conference but the number could be even bigger since some manufacturers might not have revealed their Android plans yet. So far we know that HTC, Motorola, Samsung, Acer, Dell, Sony Ericsson, Huawei, Kogan Agora and Asus have all announced one way or another that they are going to make at least one Android phone. Given these future choices, what will you buy? Android, Apple or Palm?

AT&T will definitely not let Verizon get all the netbook attention in the USA. The company announced that it will take its netbook business more seriously and its stores will sell netbooks all over the U.S. AT&T will tie its customers to some 3G data plan since the tiny laptops will come ready to handle AT&T’s 3G network.

You will be able to select from various netbook models. AT&T will offer Acer, Dell and Lenovo models. We’ll be waiting for more details on the actual nationwide launch since AT&T failed to mention anything specific.

    RIM Will Not Make Notebooks

While Google is definitely interested in turning Android into an OS ready to compete against Windows or Mac, RIM doesn’t want to make any notebooks soon. Jim Balsillie, RIM’s CEO says that the company will be totally dedicated to the cell phone business. Even Nokia is considering expanding to laptops and netbooks while Acer and Dell are more and more interested in the cell phone business. Does the mobile business include now laptops and netbooks too? Should one have them all? Better throw in an App Store and you’ve got everything prepared for imminent success.

    Acer Aspire One 571

The Acer Aspire One 571 netbook advances the resolution of its 10.1-inch display to 1280 x 720, plus an optical disc drive. However, unlike the ASUS Eee PC 1004DN, this is no DVD burner but a Vmedia drive which uses 32mm Blu-ray discs, loaded inside small plastic cartridges, each with 1GB capacity.

Initially only ROM discs full of media content will be available, with 576p-quality video content, but the company anticipates recordable versions in the future. To handle that media, the Aspire One 571 couples its Intel Atom N280 1.66GHz processor with the Quartics Q1721 Multimedia Coprocessor. Look for Bluetooth and WiFi in there too. There’s no word on pricing or whether consumers will endorse Vmedia.

Packard Bell has announced two new netbooks for Europe, the DOT M and the DOT S. They aren’t exactly new netbooks but rebranded Acer netbooks. The DOT S is a 10.1-inch netbook which is very similar to Acer Aspire One D250. The DOT is a 11.6-inch Aspire One so in case you spot it around in Europe, you’re going to know what to expect from it.

The exterior is somewhat different. There’s a textured palm rest available, silver touches to the trackpads and a different lid. The DOT S will sell for 299 Euros and the DOT M will cost 399 Euros. Both netbooks are arriving this month so hurry up and get them.

Verizon Wireless is going to start selling netbooks soon. And to be more precise, Verizon will sell 3G-enabled netbooks by the end of the second quarter. For now we have no idea what netbooks are going to arrive from Verizon but we should assume that plenty of netbook makers out there will be interested in selling their netbooks under Verizon’s name. AT&T is already selling $99 Acer netbooks so we should assume similar prices to arrive from Verizon.

Along with some Windows Mobile 6.5 hotness, we now have news that the upcoming Acer F1 smartphone will be powered by the blazing fast Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU.  But unlike the Toshiba TG01 which tops out at 1GHz, the F1 will be limited to a 800 MHz, which although low by computer standards, should be enough horsepower to run a cell phone without a hitch.  As we said already, the handset will be running Windows Mobile 6.5 with Acer’s homebrewn Acer Suite 2.0 UI akin to HTC’s TouchFLO 3D and the same could hold true for the Acer E1 and L1, which will also purportedly run WM6.5.

According to AllAboutPhones who got to spend some quality time with the F1 recently at an Acer event, we might actually see a release date as early as September, so we won’t have to wait too long to get our hands on this quick fella.

  • It looks like those Android phones from Acer are happening. The A1 touchscreen Android phone is going to arrive in September according to the Phillipine BusinessMirror. Unfortunately the specs still remain a mystery and we have no details about prices but they should all arrive in due time. Besides the A1 three other Acer handsets are going to be launched but we have no hot details about any of them either.

Acer DX900 and X960 to Arrive Soon

Acer is getting ready to launch two of its latest smartphones. According to Vincent Chen, the manager of product marketing at Acer’s Smart Handheld busines, the DX900 is going to be available by the end of the month while the X960 is coming early next month.

The DX900 will get you a 2.8-inch VGA touchscreen, dual SIM slots, quad-band GSM and tri-band UMTS/HSDPA, a 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera, GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0 and Windows Mobile 6.1. The X960 is almost similar but it lacks that dual SIM capability. Are they really going to be cheap?

Good idea: making your own smartphone no matter if it runs on Windows Mobile. Bad idea: planning an independent App Store for that Windows Mobile smartphone.

Acer is ready to follow in Apple’s steps with its own app store. Is it really the best thing to invest in? Unless Acer comes up with a totally unique smartphone OS the supposed app store might not have the success Acer wants. And it had to be a cool enough OS to determine developers to make applications for it. Apple and Microsoft have their own app stores. So do Google and RIM. Nokia is working on its OVI store. What do they all have in common? Unique operating systems!

Acer’s senior corporate vice president, Aymar de Lencquesaing, said that Acer “is examining the viability of an app store.” So far Acer will bring us Windows Mobile phones for now although Android handsets are supposed to arrive soon.

Just a little while ago we heard that Acer’s smartphones will come for free when purchased with a plan and now we hear that the company plans to sell it’s brand new handsets for only 49 Euros or about $62.

The models in question are the entry-level Acer C1 and Acer E1 and they will both come with Windows Mobile 6.5 on board. The phones will arrive in Q3 2009 so by then we should have some hot details about them for you. Stick around!

Acer Aspire One Wants to be Slim?

Ready for a slimmer Acer Aspire One? It looks like Acer is going to launch one so let’s take a look at it. It’s supposed to be a 10-inch netbook only 0.95-inch thick. The rumored specs are a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270, 945GME graphics, 1024 x 600 resolution, 1GB of RAM, 802.11 a/b/g, integrated UMTS and a 3-cell battery.

Unfortunatelly it’s just an unconfirmed rumor so far. We need Acer to give its official blessing to all these specs and pictures.

Acer has announced four absolutely new smartphones at the MWC and it plans to launch even more phones in the future. Not only that, but the company is ready to launch those already announced smartphones for free if the you’ll sign a contract with it.

AT&T and T-Mobile might be the carriers which Acer will partner up with. Therefore the carriers could offer Acer smartphones for free provided that their subscribers will sign up for a new agreement. The phones should arrive in Q4 2009 or early next year. We’re probably going to see Acer M900, Acer F900, Acer X960 and Acer DX900 running on Windows Mobile 6.1 and Acer C1, Acer F1, Acer E1 and Acer L1 running on Windows Mobile 6.5. We have no idea if Acer Android phones will also be included in the offer but we have plenty of time to find that out for you.

Acer to Launch Two Android Phones?

And the notebook belongs to an Acer representative from MWC. From what you can see in the picture here, the secret models are supposed to run on Android. As you can imagine already, there aren’t any official details regarding these Android phones so we will all have to wait.

    Acer Tempo F900 cell phone

Making its debut alongside its big brother, the M900, is the new F900 smartphone.  The spec sheet for the F900 is similar to the M900 including the 3.8-inch WVGA touchscreen, GPS, FM radio, voice recorder, voice commands, and expandable memory with two omissions.  On the F900, a virtual keyboard replaces QWERTY and the camera is downgraded to 3.2 megapixels from a 5mpx lens.  It is capable of handling 3.75G HSDPA/HSUPA speeds with ease and also integrates WiFi as one of its many connectivity options.  Acer’s own customized user interface should make key program access a breeze and those shaved off millimeters from the lack of QWERTY keyboard will definitely entice many users who like a fully featured smartphone without the accompanying bulk.

Pricing and availability are yet to be announced by Acer, but meanwhile head over Acer stall at the ongoing MWC to get some hands-on action. (more…)

  • If you thought Acer had it topped with their notebooks, think again, as their new Tempo line of cell phones look built to give HTC’s Touch series a good old run for its money.  As promised, Acer has announced its new Tempo range consisting of four loaded Windows Mobile devices and a bevy of other features that are slowly becoming ubiquitous.

The jewel of the crown of course is the the Acer Tempo M900, which makes no pretense at which upcoming handset it is competing with.  With an expansive 3.8 inch WVGA touchscreen display, the M900 sports HSDPA support, GPS, WiFi, Flashlite support, FM radio, and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, all running on WM 6.1 Profession with a 5-megapixel camera to boot.  No details on its storage capacity are available, although some kind of expansion is suggested, with our bets mostly on microSD.  The M900 has also voice command and recording functions helping us go easy on the finger tapping.

There are no information on the price or availability but a guess like the second quarter of 2009 wouldn’t be too far off.
