Motorola RAZR3 Ruby Is Cancelled

RAZR phones from Motorola have been quite popular for a while in America. And it was the iPhone that managed to steal that top spot lately. Is that the reason for which the RAZR3 Ruby got canceled? The phone was supposed to arrive sometime in Q1 2009 but that won’t happen now. I hope Motorola is finally ready to move on and try to develop a new hit phone soon.

We have talked about the Alexander and the Attila, two new Windows Mobile phones from Motorola. We have an general idea of what these smartphones are capable of but we don’t have clear release dates and prices. Some said we’ll see them by Q4 2008 but that might not happen.

It looks like Motorola is going to work with the Taiwanese hardware manufacturer Compal and Moto has already sent orders for two Windows Mobile phones. The handsets will arrive in Q1 2009 which means Santa won’t be able to deliver any Alexanders or Attilas this Christmas.

Motorola ZN5: Free at T-Mobile

The last time we mentioned the Motorola ZN5, which was only a few weeks ago, it cost around $99.

But now T-Mobile has announced that it will offer the ZINE cellphone for free, that is, after a mail-in rebate and the obvious contract which in this case lasts for 2 years.

Just for a refreshment, the Motorola ZINE ZN5 has a good 5-megapixel camera by Kodak with xenon flash, support for WiFi, and a good looking keyboard.

Motorola A1600 Gold Edition

Motorola launched the A1600 a few months ago, in August, and today they have added a new version of the A1600 on their Chinese website. Believe it or not, this is a gold edition that probably costs a lot, the exact price is unknown but it should top the value of 6 cellphones.

Anyhow, if you love and want luxury, it can’t get better than this. The only difference between the original Motorola A1600 and this special edition, is the name + color + material used + price. All the other features, such as GPS navigation, 3-megapixel camera, and microSD slot, are also part of the Gold A1600.

Apple’s iPhone did very good in the U.S. lately. In fact the iPhone 3G did so well in sales that it managed to grab that number one position held by Motorola’s RAZR. That all happened during the third quarter of the year. RAZR’s was holding that number one spot for about three years. Motorola fell on the second place and it’s followd by the BlackBerry Curve, the Rumor and the V2, both from LG.

Ross Rubin, director of industry analysis for NPD said:

The displacement of the RAZR by the iPhone 3G represents a watershed shift in handset design from fashion to fashionable functionality. Four of the five best-selling handsets in the third quarter were optimized for messaging and other advanced Internet features.

Well then, we’re waiting for Moto to get a new device at least as popular as the RAZR. Maybe an Android RAZR?

The smartphone business has taken a hit and I am not referring to the economical crisis we’re currently living in. I am talking about Apple and RIM who are boldly going after Nokia’s first place on top of the smartphone business. Needless to say the two companies have already outranked Microsoft, Samsung or Motorola and they are going for the big kill.

Although down from 51.4% smartphone market share last year to 38.9% this year, I am sure Nokia won’t lose it’s crown soon. Apple has a 17.3% of the worldwide market share while RIM is tailing along with 15.2% Apple is advantaged by the fact it only has two cell phones out there compared to RIM’s countless Berries that are sold almost anywhere. But the Storm is coming which means we are in for a tough battle between Apple and RIM for the second place. And let’s not forget about the G1 who is also coming in hot!

Motorola keeps launching various cell phones out there hoping that one of them will be a hit. At least I hope they are hoping that. The MOTOZINE ZN5 has been released by T-Mobile . You’ll get a 5-megapixel Kodak camera with xenon flash, quadband EDGE, WiFi support and a keypad that morphs. All that for the cheap price of $99 with a two-year contract.

Not a bad deal, but the phone is far from becoming a hit. The ZN5 is available in T-Mobile stores as of right now, so go check one out.

In case you are looking for a new Bluetooth headset this Sunday, we have just the thing from Motorola. Actually they are two things, the H270 and the H390.

The H270 is a simple Bluetooth headset with just one call/end conversation button and two volume keys. It will get you up to 6 hours of talk time and up to 6 days of standby time.

The H390 has a better battery which will get you a total of 8 continuous hours of talk time and up to 8 days of standby time. It has a LED which changes color like a traffic light. When it reaches red you should recharge the device.

The fact that Motorola’s mobile business is doing as well as it did once isn’t a novelty at all. What’s new about Motorola is that the company is going to have some $800 million expenditure cut planned for 2009 and it will fire 3,000 employees. Considering that two-thirds of them are coming, or should I say going-away permanently, from the handset division, I’d like to see what phones is Motorola going to produce in the future. You know, a future in which the handset division has 2000 less employees…

While we’re waiting for Windows Mobile 7 handsets to arrive we can still play with Windows Mobile 6.1 handsets. Or are we going to get Windows Mobile 6.5 handsets?
Motorola’s CEO happened to mention this new version during a conference call in which he discussed the Motorola’s earnings. One of the points he made was the fact that Windows Mobile 6.1 hasn’t been able to keep up with Apple in the “user experience” department.

Does anyone have any idea about Windows Mobile 6.5? Does it exist? Anyone ready to leak something about it?

The Motorola RAZR2 V9 already had some classic editions such as Ferrari one, but the new version V9x is an upgraded model. In some aspects, it is very similar to the normal V9, but in others - storage capacity, more battery life - it is a better cellphone.

The price tag is average for a cellphone with all these good features - $200 after rebate and 2-year contract.

New features on the Motorola RAZR2 V9x:

- supports 8GB when using memory cards
- more battery life in talking-mode and stand-by mode
- video share of AT&T (more…)

Asus seems ready to make its first Android phone. So far we know that Motorola wants in the Android business. Other manufacturers and carriers are toying with the idea too, so 2009 might be a great Android year.

Inside sources point to an Android-powered Asus release in the first half of 2009. The first Android handsets will arrive in Taiwan first but they are surely going to be released in other markets after. So watch-out everyone! Google is going to make a strong impression in 2009.

Duracell went from batteries to storage devices, and Motorola goes from cellphones to GPS navigation systems - that’s how the tech world rolls. They have presented two new GPS systems, one of them being the MotoNav TN30 and the other is the small-brother MotoNav TN20.

The MotoNav TN30 boasts a 4.3-inch touchscreen display (larger than TN20 model), has the usual text-to-speech function, and comes with pre-loaded maps of Canada, Puerto Rico, and 50 US States. Other than that, there isn’t much more technical information available about the new products.

  • Motorola i9: iDEN cellphone

A new Motorola cellphone has been spotted at FCC, it is codenamed i9 and has the unique characteristic of being a iDEN handset. What is iDEN? Integrated Digital Enhanced Network, which basically provides more individual frequencies to the phone.

In case you haven’t noticed, the i9 is pretty similar to other Motorola devices, in this case the RAZR. It has Linux-Java as the operative system, and includes a 3-megapixel camera with auto-focus, a slot for microSD memory cards, and stereo Bluetooth for high-quality sound.

Extra features on Motorola i9: a navigation system also known as GPS, and a working mode similar to the iPhone:

The i9 comes with morphing icon keys on the front of the flip that will change depending on whether you are holding your phone in portrait or landscape mode.

After the ZN5, Moto is working on another phone that will bring us that 5 megapixel camera. The rumored handset is the Motorola VE66 which could be quite a smartphone. It will feature 3G, WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity and it will run on Montavista v2.6.10 Linux OS. Add a Freescale SCM-A11 500MHz processor, a 2.4 inch 16 million TFT display and a microSD slot and you might have quite a nice Motorola phone on your hands.

We’re going to count on the same Kodak camera lens as the ZN5 had and we’re going to hope the VE66 will be released soon. This might just be one of the Motorola Phones we’ve been waiting for.
