There is something about this new iPhone app, the Tuner2.com that will make it one of the reliable and quality applications available at the Apple app store. It carries the Fraunhofer’s High Efficiency Advanced Audio Codec decoder library, promising better audio quality for iPhone owners.

Modulation Index and Tuner2 have chosen MPEG-4 HE-AACv2 (aka eAAC+) for its ability to deliver high quality stereo at only 32 kbit/s over 3G networks. Fully compatible with the 3GPP and 3GPP2 standards for audio streaming, the Modulation Index iPhone app uses RTP streaming for a more reliable mobile listening experience.

The iPhone app also supports HE-AACv1 and mp3 SHOUTcast as well as Icecast2 streams, instant song purchase, song tagging, album art, shake random station selection, station search, and e-mail/Twitter stream now playing information. Each custom iPhone app has its own dedicated directory service dynamically configurable by the radio network customer.

Available on hundreds of millions of cell phones around the world and streaming about 25 percent of all Internet radio stations, MPEG-4 HE-AACv2 is part of a large family of audio codec libraries available from Fraunhofer IIS for the iPhone Software Development Kit (SDK) and other mobile platforms. Amongst the SDK licensees are radio stations, service providers and media player manufacturers.

Fraunhofer’s audio codec offering for the iPhone SDK also include mp3 & AAC encoders/decoders, as well as MPEG Surround binaural decoders for surround Internet radio on the move or in the rear-seat of a car.

In a move to help speed up the 3G transition phase in China, Qiao Xing Mobile has announced the need for 200 new engineers to compose the team that will accelerate its 3G mobile phone R&D. The new personnel will spearhead the Company’s research, design, development and commercialization of 3G network- compatible handsets, with a focus on TD-SCDMA and WCDMA products.

Mr. Wu Zhiyang, chairman of Qiao Xing Mobile, commented, “In 2009, CECT is scheduled to launch several exciting new 3G models. Currently, the VEVA T3 is in operational test with China Mobile, the largest operator in China. And our VEVA F1 has already passed a qualification test and been selected into the first WCDMA model list of China Unicom, another Chinese operator.”

Mr. Wu continued, “The advent of the 3G era brings a big wave of development opportunities for Chinese mobile handset makers. Analysts forecast the rapid rollout of 3G networks in China means the demand for 3G phones with advanced user interface and web-friendly functionalities will rise at a double-digit-figure for the next few years.

Although the financial crisis had an adverse impact on the high-tech and telecom industries, we believe it presents opportunities for us to recruit top R&D talents from the outside. With four Company-owned and operated specialty retail stores in Beijing and many more to come, and our 3G phone bundling agreements with Chinese operators, we are well-positioned to lead our industry with the most innovative mobile handset products and seize this historic opportunity brought by 3G.”
