We’d like to see Nokia focus more on creating smartphone ready to compete against the iPhone, the Motorola Droid or the HTC HD2. Does that mean that we need more megapixels out of the cameras of such phones?
It looks like Nokia is going to launch a new phone dedicated to photography lovers. The N87 is the follower of the N86 and while the latter sported an 8-megapixel camera the new phones will apparently offer us an impressive 12-megapixel shooter.
The new phone isn’t official just yet and we only have some rumored specs at our disposal: 12-megapixel camera, dual LED Xenon flash, Carl Zeiss optics, 480 x 800 resolution touchscreen, 600MHz processor and a dual slider mechanism. What do you say? Anyone excited?

No, it’s not the yesteryear Walkman phone with the same model number, but it is so much more. The SCH-W880 will be a monster in the realm of cameraphones and comes with tons of features that are normally associated with a digital camera. Besides the awesome 12-megapixel lens, the device sports a lot of camera-centric options like a 3x optical zoom, dedicated camera button, HD video recording, and a mode dial, which is a first on a handset, and a 3.3-inch WVGA AMOLED touchscreen display. There are no details on its other specs but the current-standard features like WiFi, GPS, microSD expansion, and Bluetooth wouldn’t be out of place. The SCH-W880 is rumored for a release on SKT in South Korea in the near future, so we will hit you up with more details as they emerge.

Back in May we got our first official glimpse of the 12.1 megapixel camera touting Sony Ericsson Satio. Now, a few months later, the device has finally made its way through the FCC which leaves us with the above live shot of the phone.
Spec wise this device is said to only feature GSM 850/1900 which means it will only have EDGE and no 3G however, at more details are revealed this may change. Now we just need to know what carrier (if any) will pick up Sony Ericsson’s Satio.

It seems that a handset manufacturer by the name of Altek has come forth to announced their 12megapixel touting T8680.
As you can see, this phone is as close as you can get to being a digital camera while still retaining calling features. Coupled with its 12MP sensor is a 3x optical zoom, xenon flash and video recording features making it a perfect alternative to an actual digital camera.
Other features include a 3″ touchscreen, Bluetooth, USB, TV out port and tri-band 900/1800/1900 GSM/EDGE capabilities. Unfortunately, there is no word if Altek ever plans to bring this phoen to North America but, as always, we’ll keep you posted.

The most important cell phone makers out there have already announced 12-megapixel camera phones or are on the verge of doing so. We already know that Samsung, LG or Sony Ericsson will offer their customers a 12-megapixel shooter and Nokia will not want to miss any of that action.
The Finnish company will launch a 12-megapixel camera phone by the end of the year. There’s no official news from Nokia about the new phone but the rumors say it will feature a Carl Zeiss lens capable of optical zoom. That optical zoom will definitely convince some people to pick this 12-megapixel camera phone over that the competition has to offer.

Samsung has recently announced an addition to their Pixon line of mobile handsets, the Pixon 12. The Pixon has been around for a while and has been known to feature high resolution cameras. And if you’ve been paying attention you’ll know that as far back as February Samsung was rumored to be working on a 12MP phone.
Well, the Pixon 12 takes this to a whole new level featuring a 12MP camera that Samsung seems very excited about saying it’s a world’s first. However, the camera’s resolution isn’t the only thing that makes this a beautiful handset as it also has a 3.1″ AMOLED touch screen with a 10,000:1 contrast ratio, a fast-image saving feature with only 2 seconds of downtime between shots, an auto-focus feature, a 28mm wide angle lens and WiFi support.
Word has it the Pixon 12 will make its way to Europe in June and other regions sometime after.

The picture above shows a leaked Sony Ericsson. We don’t have all the details just yet but the handset above, codenamed the Kokura, is said to be the CDMA version of that famous 12-megapixel Idou handset. Will Verizon launch the Kokura? Is Sprint going to get it? Will you get the Kokura or the Idou soon? So many questions and so little time. We’ll be waiting for some sort of confirmation from the parties involved.

The Idou from Sony Ericsson might not be the must-have phone you were waiting for but we have a rumored date for it. The Idou should go on sale in October which means you will get plenty of time to adjust your budget for it. That impressive camera will definitely cost you an extra buck or two.
The phone will offer you a 3.5-inch touchscreen, a 12 megapixel camera, GPS and probably more smartphone-like features. According to Sony Ericsson officials the phone will ship “sometime in the second half of the year” but nobody is confirming the October launch date.

Sony Ericsson’s Idou is a 12 megapixel camera phone which might make an impression once it arrives. The handset will be a great tool for both mobile entertainment and fast communication and it looks like Sony Ericsson has prepared a Stylus which seems destined to go with the handset. Sony Ericsson hasn’t made it clear if the stylus will be bundled with the Idou or if you will have to get it separately. But it’s good to know that we’ll have an alternative to our fingers to control this device.

A Samsung 12 megapixel camera phone has been rumored just before MWC but we haven’t seen it yet. What we’ve seen at MWC was a Sony Ericsson able to shoot 12 megapixel pictures. LG seems also interested in developing such a camera phone and it’s said to be working on it already.
LG Mobile’s head of marketing in the UK says that LG has the 12 megapixel camera phone in the works:
We’ll very much be releasing a 12MP cameraphone. However, it’s important that people realize when taking 12MP images, they’ll be using huge amounts of data, and it will be more difficult to do things like send such files.
Question is, do we really need that many megapixels in our camera phone? Shouldn’t we be buying real cameras with real camera features if we want really professional photos?
