Did you get your T-Mobile G1 yet? Does it do POP3/IMAP email? People say it wouldn’t so I am just checking since I can’t be testing it hands on. People are talking about it on T-Mobile’s forum and it looks like they are reporting up to 95% connection errors when trying to check their email on the G1. Gmail is working fine apparently but others don’t.
T-Mobile is going to fix whatever problem has occurred, I am sure. After all checking emails while on the go is one of the reasons people buy smartphones in the first place! Tell us how G1 emailing works for you!

[...] hottest handset out there right now but it still has some problems. We’ve seen yesterday that POP3/IMAP mail doesn’t fully work and today we found out there’s a security flaw inside the web [...]
The only way I could get my POP3 e-mail to work with my new Google phone was to ‘Forward’ my POP3 accounts to my G-Mail account.
If there IS a way to get it to work, I haven’t found it. And I am NOT ‘tech challenged’, I’ve been a computer assembler, and mainframe/server programmer in the past, using Cobal, Fortran, Assembler, Basic, etc… So I know my way around tech devices, and I have NOT been able to get POP3 mail accounts to properly work on my G1.
I am tech challenged (to say the least) I can get my emails from hotmail but it won’t let me type a new one?? Anysuggestions
I have to forward my Yahoo POP email to Gmail in order to retrieve it on the G1 phone. Otherwise, this is a real sweet phone.
I’ve been having troubles also, this is what I’ve found:
I cannot reliably configure POP or IMAP mail over a WiFi connection, Both RC29 and RC30.\
POP mail seems to load only so many messages in a session. You may have to re-press ‘Load More Messages’ to get all your mail, especially if you have many unread messages.
I cannot reliably check mail on a WiFi connection. When I do, two things happen:
1. I get timeouts or connection failed errors, or it just doesn’t actually retrieve any more messages.
2. This persists even when I switch back to Edge - I do not have enough 3G signal to test this conclusively yet. And when this happens, I must power off and pull the SIM card to recover and be able to check mail over EDGE.
I see that my phone will claim to be checking mail over WiFi, but I can’t see any clear sign there is indeed network traffic being exchanged. Switching back to Edge, I don’t see it even attempting to send/receive network traffic when it is ‘loading more messages’.
I suspect this is a client issue, or a router issue on the phone. TMob is getting my calls about this.
I see problems on my mail server, though, and this may be related to some of those…
The G1 (RC30) eMail client does NOT work properly with several IMAP interfaces to eMail services. In addition to the problems already described, a sent message can have multiple copies appear in the IMAP Sent Folder of the eMail service while only one may appear in the Sent folder of the G1.
Given the fact that eMail is among the most ubiquitous applications found on the Internet it is reasonable to expect it to work correctly. Different kinds of problems are found when using different eMail services.
The eMail services that I use have never had a problem using a variety of handheld devices using the T-Mobile Data Service since it first became available in about 2001. And, I do not have any problems using the same eMail systems with my iPhone and the ATT Data Service.
While the Gmail client works with Gmail accounts, it only provides the minimum functions. And, while it is possible to forward other email to Gmail and reply from Gmail, that is really not an effective alternative to having a working eMail client.
Is this an example of what Google means by “Network Neutrality” and the other principles of the Internet?
I jut purchased 1 of these phones, very disappointed the salesperson never told me about the POP/email issues! this is the reason I have a SMARTPHONE! not happy so far although the GPS is flawless
This yahoo email flaw really brings this device down. Its a little annoying to do but I am able to check all my emails by just using the Browser and logging on to yahoo mail. I have it bookmarked but obviously you can’t get notified with this method. I hope this is resolved soon along with getting flash on this .
Yahoo mail works fine, but only through TMobile’s network. Disable WiFi and you shouldn’t run into problems with yahoo mail.
Someone please help. When I try to set up notifications for both gmail and regular email I can’t do both. I only get notified for gmail. I do not use my gmail account hardly. Primarily I use my yahoo account. Is there a way to be notified only for my yahoo account? I realize that I need the gmail for the G1 to work properly, but I do not use it. when I first got the phone it all worked fine, then all of a sudden it stopped. I have done the factory reset a gazillion times, but cannot seem to get past this issue. I too was not informed of this yahoo/gmail flaw. Very disappointed in that. One of the main reasons I got this phone.
