STMicroelectronics Introduces Smallest Single-Chip Camera Sensor
So what, say you? Well, developing the market's smallest single-chip camera sensor means that phones even thinner than thinnest ones you see today could be developed in the near future. This latest chip called the VD6725, measures 1/5th of an inch with UXGA active pixel array. The new optical format imaging sensor is so small, it can fit inside a mobile phone with the dimensions of 0.2x0.2x0.15 inches! That's so, SO much less than a half-inch, peeps. The VD6725 can produce video stream at 30fps at VGA resolution and 15fps at UXGA resolution. The chip is now available through ST's Through Silicon Via (TSV) wafer-level package or as a Chip On Board (COB) die, and costs around US$2 per unit.
