Sprint and Allscripts announced the availability of Sprint smartphones targeted at physicians, allowing them to generate electronic prescriptions.

As a part of this initiative, Sprint will be donating custom versions of its Sprint PPC-6700 Pocket PC phone to 1,000 licensed prescribers who register for the National ePrescribing Patient Safety Initiative and activate the web-based eRx NOW electronic prescribing software before September 15, 2007.

To make it simpler to send out ePrescriptions, the PPC-6700 screen includes a link to launch the eRx NOW application. The PPC-6700 is a Windows Mobile 5.0 phone sporting Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and high-speed net connectivity.
