The result? It’s a draw! It’s not that the iPhone 3GS is not faster! It’s more likely that AT&T’s current 3G network can’t be used yet to show the iPhone’s true potential. If you got excited about the whole Speed coming with the 3GS you should be pretty bummed right now. Sure your new phone has a faster processor and it can record video, but it fails where it really shouldn’t. That connectivity speed is not attainable just yet.
The speed test above was conducted in Chicago and it clearly shows that the iPhone 3GS won’t be better than the 3G model. It’s just a little faster at downloads with 1202kbps for the 3GS vs 1161kbps for the 3G and similar when it comes to uploads speed. Latency-wise it does a little better with numbers at 175ms vs 210ms.
So folks, there you have it! You should be just fine with your iPhone 3G at least until AT&T has deployed and thoroughly tested the new 7.2Mbps network. For now AT&T hasn’t even rolled out the public trial of this upgraded 3G network which means that only AT&T personnel would have access to it. Basically any speed test conducted in the Chicago area would have been done on AT&T’s regular 3G network which better explains the similar performance of the iPhone 3GS and 3G. We hope that by the end of the year those bars in the graph above will significantly change in favor of the 3GS as AT&T will finish upgrading its 3G network. When that happens, you should have no problem ditching your iPhone 3G in favor of the new model.

This is a stupid article, sorry. The 3GS is leagues better than the 3G because that extra processor speed LOADS websites much faster in general, so the connectivity speed being the same doesnt really even matter. Processor speed has a huge effect on how fast websites load. And download speed for the iphone? Who cares? What would you really be actually downloading on the phone with very few capabilities to actually run what you download?
