Sony Ericsson Equinox Cell Phone Review–No iPhone, But Still Decent

By Steve Anderson - 07/28/2010 12:01:09 AM

The folks out at Sony Ericsson have put out quite a few cell phones, and I’m working my way through the stacks.  And what I’ve found so far is a bit of a mixed bag quality-wise, with some putting out a good impression, and others leaving me cold.  So when I tried out the Sony Ericsson Equinox, I had no idea what to expect.  But this is what I got.

The Sony Ericsson Equinox is a folder-style phone with conference call capability, speakerphone, Bluetooth connectivity, USB port, microSD card slot, mobile email, mobile web, Java application compatibility, video calling, a variety of content available for download, a 3.2 megapixel camera with 3.2x digital zoom and video recording capability, alarm clock, calendar, calculator, stopwatch, MP3 player and a battery that can yield up to ten hours of talk time on a single charge.

As is so often the case with current phones, the problem isn’t really in the features at all.  Where something you want right now is missing, it’s still not a dealbreaker.  After all, you never know if you might be able to download it in a matter of weeks or even days from somebody’s app store.  And there are certainly plenty of features available out of the box.

The problem here–and this is really a personal bent–is that the features were a bit difficult to access and use.  Getting the controls in hand was a fairly difficult task for me, and it took a while to finally get the hang of everything.

Aside from that, though, the Sony Ericsson Equinox is a pretty sharp phone that should do most of what you want.  It may not be an iPhone killer, but it’s still a good quality phone.

The Good

Great battery life

Decent camera

Good array of features

The Bad

Difficult control scheme

Score 7 / 10
