Seagate has just announced its new lineup of FreeAgent drives. They are external drives for desktops and laptops and they come pre-formatted either for PC or Mac.
The FreeAgent Go are made for laptops and they will come in 4 colors for PC: silver, black, red and blue. The PC version comes with USB 2.0. The Mac version comes in silver only but it has both USB 2.0 and FireWire connectivity. A docking station is available for connecting it to a computer. The drives will get you up to 500GB of extra storage space.
The desktop models are called FreeAgent Desk drive for Mac users and FreeAgent XTreme drive for PC. These can get you up to 1.5 TB of space. The Mac version has USB 2.0, FireWire 400 and FireWire 800 . In the PC version the FireWire 800 is replaced with eSATA. You can have horizontal or vertical models and they are made out of brushed aluminum.
As for software, the FreeAgent comes with the Seagate Manager software which will help you perform automated back up and multi-computer synchronization. There’s also AES-256 encryption support and Seagate DrivePass password protection.
The FreeAgents will be available this October with prices ranging from $160 to $350 for laptop drives and from $160 to $300 for the desktop models.
