Samsung has teamed up with NXP Semiconductors and T3G Technologies to roll out the first TD-SCDMA HSDPA/GSM/GPRS/EDGE multi-mode cellphone in the world, known as the SGH-T578H. This nifty little handset can achieve a theoretical maximum data transfer rate of 2.8Mbps, which translates into downloading a handful of high quality MP3 files in under a minute.

It is the industry's first soft modem that is powered by NXP’s Embedded Vector Processor (EVP) which results in high data transfer and multi-mode capability. There is no word on pricing, but this China-centric phone looks set to take off in a big way, especially when you have over 70 million potential subscribers lying around.
