Samsung Jack Cell Phone Review–Just Slightly Innovative

By Steve Anderson - 03/31/2010 12:01:10 AM

att-samsung-jack-i637Samsung phones have often proved to be something of a mixed bag for me–they have a tendency to push for the “weird innovator” classification on their phone models, and it shows by giving you things you wouldn’t expect–for better or for worse.  The Samsung Jack will be no exception.

The Samsung Jack is a candy bar style cell phone that offers conference call capability, alarm (with clock), Bluetooth connectivity, calculator, world time clock, mobile email, mobile web, a 3.2 megapixel cell phone, GPS, support for several digital audio and video files, access to a host of AT&T specific applications, and a battery capable of generating seven hours of talk time from one charge.

Perhaps the biggest thing I liked about the Samsung Jack was its unusual approach to menus.  Normally, with a menu, you scroll down through all the available options.  But with the Jack, you scroll down through a list of five, and if you want to see more, there’s a “more” tab at the bottom of the five that you scroll to and continue from there.  I liked that.  It’s innovative but not too disruptive.

Some have commented that the phone feels “slippery”, and I have to admit that I’m there with them.  It felt slippery to me, too, though at the time I just chalked it up to my hands rather than the phone.

So all things considered, I’m pleased with the Samsung Jack, a phone that understands that innovation is a good thing, but too much at once just leaves you nauseous.

The Good

Interesting menu options

Nice array of features

Fairly easy learning curve

The Bad

Slippery feel

Score 8 / 10
