Western Digital (WD) plans large-scale orders of mobile hard drives for notebooks and portable storage applications. The amount of memory for these new 2.5 inch hard drives will range from 40 to 160 GB, and will feature quiet operation, high shock tolerance, as well as low power consumption. These devices will use Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR) technology to achieve more data storage on a small device.

The WD Scorpio 160 GB and other models are currently available on the company’s site. The estimated price is $179.99, and will probably lower for the ones with less memory.
