Hitachi just recently announced its perpendicular magnetic recording technology (PMR) hard disk which offers 160 GB Of storage capacity. The new Travelstar 5K160 is a 5400 rpm 2.5" drive is ideal for mobile solutions like notebooks and other mobile devices. According to Hitachi this “super-pendicular drive,” compared to other models is more reliable and functional and also uses second generation read/write head for PMR hard. The users are assured of high end performance and stability in a number of dynamic environments.

The 5K160 uses all the latest technologies out there and Hitachi has incorporated an alloy combination head made of materials like iridium, manganese and chromium which result in greater sensitivity and accuracy in reading data. This mobile drive also features two platters with a capacity of 80 GB each, ensuing in a storage density of 131 Gb/inch2, where the operating shock resistance is 325 Gs; and non-operating shock is 1000Gs.The drive should be available by summer for $270 and a Travelstar 5K160 upgrade kit for notebooks will also be available for $300.
