Synaptics Launches SecurePad TouchPad Module for the Notebook Market
TouchPads are starting to be one of the best deterrents when it comes to the theft of information. After all, if you have a computer that only you and a few others should have access to, what better way to block unwanted users than a thumbprint ID? Not only is it a difficult system for information-thieves to work around, a TouchPad keeps the valid users from having to remember a UserID and password. If you’re like me, you already have too many of those as it is.
TouchPads, like the popular LiveFlex from Validity Sensors, Inc., are starting to become more common on desktop PCs, especially those in business. Unfortunately, laptops and notebooks are a different story. According to Curt Chandler, Vice President of Technical Marketing at Validity, “the implementation of fingerprint technology into notebook computers has been hindered by frail silicon sensorsâ€. Silicon is vulnerable to Electrostatic Discharge (ESD), and a human’s finger can carry enough volts to cripple the sensors in an ordinary electronic notebook.
Synaptics Incorporated, a leading developer of interface solutions for mobile computing, communications, and entertainment industries, has solved this notebook touchpad problem with the creation of the SecurePad. The SecurePad, created in a joint-partnership with Validity Sensors, Inc., uses a LiveFlex sensor that is completely separate from the silicon. The SecurePad also is resistant to chemicals, liquids, as well as the general grime encountered in a real working environment.
All a user has to do is simply swipe their finger over a durable plastic surface, and his or her identification, data security, and authentication will be ascertained. The SecurePad comes with compatible software including Softex Incorporated’s OmniPass, Phoenix Technologies’ Biotrust Windows application TrustedCore PreBoot Authentication software.
Information on the SecurePad has not quite been made public. It should be available soon, but there is no mention of a set retail price as yet.
