Sony Ericsson Announces the Sony Ericsson P990 Smartphone
Sony Ericsson announced their next generation smartphone, the Sony Ericsson P990, which succeeds their hugely popular P800, P900 and P910 smartphones. Slated to use the latest Symbian OS version 9.1 and UIQ 3, this UMTS smartphone is Wi-Fi enabled as well. UIQ 3 has been one of the most anticipated upgrades in the growing smartphone world. Offering a range of productivity features, the new P990 will also be sporting a 2 megapixel camera with autofocus and full-fledged keyboard.
Of course, you will have to wait until Q1 of 2006 to get your hands on this baby.
The usual 2.8" QVGA touch screen provides for quick input, and the underlying Symbian OS allows the user to seamlessly switch between multiple applications. The added bonus of a full keyboard simplifies typing out e-mails. Interesting new features like automatic time zone change to the included Calendar app are definitely appreciated.
The P990 will now have 80MB of user memory, and will support Memory Stick PRO Duo up to 4GB in capacity, although the phone itself will ship with a paltry 64MB mem stick (it will, however, be pre-loaded with a VPN client and yet-to-be-named anti-virus software). UMTS and WLAN capabilities ensure that users can be in touch with their e-mail constantly. My only worry would be how fast the battery would lose power.
The Sony Ericsson P990 will be available in the following variants:
