Samsung Q30It's pretty clear by now that Samsung is betting on NAND flash based solid state disks (SSD) as a replacement for hard drives in portable PCs. The new Samsung Q30-SSD, a 12.1" notebook PC (pictured below), is the latest device from Samsung to undergo a transplant from traditional hard drives to the newer SSDs. Oh, and the other device the model is showing off is the Samsung Q1 UMPC.

Ideal for anyone on the move, the Samsung Q30-SSD provides additional mental peace in case of a fall or liquid spilled on the notebook PC: thanks to the SSD, data can be more easily recovered from the flash memory. In addition, the speed advantage of SSD cannot be ignored. With a 53 MB/s read speeds (that's 300 percent faster than hard drives) and 28 MB/s write speeds (150 percent faster), Windows XP boots up 25-50% faster on the Samsung Q30-SSD.

Take your average notebook. Do you know that it generates as much as 30dB of noise during operation? With the SSD, Samsung aims for a quieter workplace. What's more, battery life is enhanced because of the lower power requirements of the NAND flash-based disk.

A bit on the higher side. Wait, did I say just a bit? It's a whole lot more than that. Be ready to set yourself back by US $3,700 for the Samsung NT-Q30-SSD . Details from Samsung. Available in Korea starting June 2006. Woot!
