Quanta Taiwan To Manufacture $100 Laptop
News about the $100 dollar laptop has been around for a couple of months. Initially developed at the Massachsets Institute of Technology (MIT) the product was developed to bring this computers to children in poor countries around the world.
Recently the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) board of directors announced that Quanta Computer of Taiwan was chosen as the official manufacturer for the project. The $100 dollar laptop is expected to hit the market in Q4 2006 and will initially be brought to China, India, Brazil, Argentina, Egypt, Nigeria and Thailand.
The $100 dollar laptop is a Linux-based device capable of running DVDs and running on a 500MHz processor, 128MB of RAM and 500MB of Flash Memory. It also will have WiFi abilities for surfing the internet. All these functions will run on what they call innovative power (including wind-up technology).
