Olympus E-400 DSLR Digital Camera

olympus_e400_4j.jpgOlympus has gone ahead and released the “World’s Smallest and Lightest DSLR”! Personally I belong to the old school of thinking when it comes to photography and do believe that a camera body should offer a good grip! The Canon 350D has always been criticized for its small body and thus wonder if Olympus made the right decision. While the ‘world’s smallest tag may be dismissed as a gimmick, however that doesn’t mean the E-400 is a turkey. In fact the DSLR has some great features to offer!

For starters the new Olympus E-400 has a 10 megapixel resolution which means that it can hold its own against the Nikon D80 and Canon 400D. The DSLR is based on the 4/3rds Standard and in Olympus in conjunction has also released two new lenses; Zuiko Digital 14-42mm 1:3.5-5.6 ED (pictured above) and a Zuiko Digital 40-150mm 1:4-5.6 ED . One think I like about the DSLR is the inclusion of a Supersonic Wave Filter which protects the CCD and keeps dust particles at bay.

The Olympus E-400 is equipped with a 2.5 inch LCD monitor and includes 31 special shooting modes like Fireworks, Landscapes, Macro, and Sunsets. It has the TruePic TURBO image processor under its hood which is known for producing superior and vibrant images. Thanks to the Four Thirds Standard one is able to choose from a wide range of digital lenses and accessories and not worry about compatibility issues.

The DSLR also includes some nifty features like with up to five images in RAW buffer, Depth of field preview function, JPEG & RAW recording, AF-lock functionality, Exposure Bracketing function and One touch white balance. For now the DSLR should be available onto to our European friends and pricing hasn’t been announced as of now. For more details Visit Olympus.

Olympus Stylus 740 Digital Camera

740.jpgThe Olympus Stylus 740 Digital camera is sleek, smooth, and it’s rounded edges make it...dare I say it? Sexy. It is also skinny, with a one-inch thickness that takes up little space, yet it does so much.

The Olympus Stylus 740 has a powerful zoom lens that can magnify up to five times. The camera uses Dual Image Stabilization in order to boost ISO sensitivity so that you have the clearest shots possible without the blurring. Its TruePic TURBO Image Processor enhances the image quality and color. With an LCD of 7.1 Megapixels and 2.5 inches, you can see with your own eyes how good your pictures will turn out. You can also use the in-camera editing feature for color saturation, removing red-eye, resizing, even adding text to turn a snapshot into a memory.

Anyone who is into any “extreme” hobby will appreciate this camera’s ability to survive no matter what the climate. Its all-weather durability makes it possible to operate in rain, sleet or snow. Not only that, this camera has a special transparent polycarbonate that locks out water, so you can take the camera 40 meters underwater.

The camera can adjust quickly to match particular bright or dark settings, and can even shoot in the dark with a Bright Capture Movie setting. There are also 27 shooting modes, so that you can select various types of images for whatever the lighting.

Not only is it a camera, but it shoots VGA quality video. Simply insert an xD-Picture Card and film as much as your particular card will allow.

Even though many of these features sounds difficult to work, Olympus promises that any user can do anything with the camera’s user-friendly, easy-to-use help option.

The camera should retail at about $349.99. it comes with a wrist strap, WIN/Mac USB cable, audio/video cable, LI-42 rechargeable battery, and CD-Rom software.

Olympus Stylus 730 Digital Camera

olympus-stylus-730.JPGOlympus have announced three new digital cameras today, all of them are Stylus models - we will start with the Olympus Stylus 730 that has a huge (?) 3.0-inch LCD screen which is more than enough to see all the photos clearly and you will probably see little details that weren’t notable if the camera had a 2.5-inch screen, the best thing is that even with a big size screen the camera is able to have small dimensions – 3.8 inches wide x 2.4 inches high x 0.83 inches deep – and in terms of slimness it stays below the 1.0-inch mark.

To deliver a higher-ranking image quality it comes with a 7.1-megapixel CCD image sensor, if you decide to print a poster size photo the final result will still be pretty good. A useful feature on the Stylus 730 that makes it easier to use is the Digital Image Stabilization mode, it can prevent blurry scenarios even before taking the photo and if that is not possible, it will retouch the photo afterwards using the edit mode, all done automatically with the help of sensors. There are 24 selectable shooting modes, in which 20 of them are pre-programmed scene modes like Sports, Candle Light, Sunset and others; for the not-so-advanced users there is the simple mode. To record videos with VGA quality with sound there is the QuickTime Movie mode. Another new feature is the Perfect Fix, besides including the DISE* it also has a lightning fix and a red-eye fix too.

If printing photos is one of your favorite things you will be delighted with the included PictBridge technology because it can print directly from the source (camera) to a PictBridge printer - no need for a computer. It is a one-touch task, you will only need to press the “Print” button and its done. The Bright Capture Technology is another plus if you like to photograph with low light conditions.

The Olympus Stylus 790 will become available in September and cost $400, comes with a wrist strap, Win or Mac USB cable and all the other normal equipment.

Olympus E-330 Now With Six Different Kits

Bought an Olympus E-330 digital SLR recently? Well, the company is offering as many as six add-on kits targeted at specific applications including travel, macro and underwater photography.

While the preview LCD leaves us a bit wanting (it's a 2.5" LCD - I'd prefer a 3.0" on an SLR camera), the screen is good with a 90° up-tilting and 45° down-tilting possible making it easy to frame your pictures. All kits come with the E-330 body, and some additional goodies.

Olympus E-330 Architecture Pro Kit
Architecture Pro KitIf photographing buildings and architectural wonders is your thing, the Olympus E-330 Architecture Pro Kit is made for you. Starting with Zuiko Digital ED 7-14mm (1:4.0) and Zuiko Digital 14-54mm (1:2.8-3.5) lenses, you get all you need for taking superb photographs. The 7-14mm lens has a huge 114° angle of view and you can capture images at 1:4.0 fixed aperture. This kit also includes an FL-50 flash, a professional grade flash with Guide Number of 50. The second zoom lens provides a greater shooting range.

Olympus E-330 Medical & Macro Pro Kit
Medical and Macro Pro KitWith a Zuiko Digital 50mm 1:2.0 macro lens, and another 14-54mm 1:2.8-3.5 lens, this kit is a dentist's dream. The 50mm lens, an equivalent of 100mm on a 35mm camera, offers true-to-life macro shots at a 1:2 magnification. This kit also includes SRF-11 Ring Flash with FR-1 flash adapter, which ensures a uniform illumination at close range. This is essentially useful for taking shots of teeth, skin or other close-range subjects.

Olympus E-330 Travelling Pro Kit
Travelling Pro KitThis one's meant for me. I'm sure of it. With two Zuiko lenses (a 11-22mm splash-proof lens and another 18-180mm), Olympus has also thrown in an FL-36 external flash. The kit also includes an SBC-1 E-System Bag Compact - an ideal travel partner. Combining the two lenses gives you a huge 11-180mm focal range (which turns out to be 22-360mm on a 35mm camera). Is that yummy or what?

Olympus E-330 Nature Pro Kit
Nature Pro KitEnvy National Geographic photographers? Wondering how you can take such breath-taking photographs when you're out in a jungle? Check out the Nature Pro Kit. Olympus EVOLT E-500 Digital Camera

Olympus EVOLT E-500Olympus has launched the new EVOLT E-500, claimed to be the most full-featured DSLR camera in its class (sub-$1,000.00 SLR cameras). At 8 million pixels of detail, you can well be on your way to professional quality photography, and at the same time be able to blow up prints to large sizes which was previously not possible. Just to give you an idea: a 3264 x 2448 RAW image can occupy about 13.6 MB.

Kudos to Olympus for including their Dust Reduction System in the E-500, so you can now take pictures without worrying about microdust that can potentially ruin them. The cool technology uses a Supersonic Wave Filter that shakes at 35,000 vibrations per second to remove any dust in front of the camera sensor each time you turn on the camera.

The E-500 comes with a 2.5" LCD as well, so you can preview your images with great detail as well. It's always good to have a bigger display (both for preview and the menus), but I am not sure of the implications of battery usage. If you are an amateur or new to digital photography, don't worry; the E-500 comes with an easy-to-use menu system and also adds automatic settings for any situation. It also has 25 exposure modes.

TruePic TURBO Image Processor guarantees fast camera response and processing speed. Of course, you will have to use extreme speed CF cards to take advantage of this feature.

Frankly, it's hard to believe you are getting all this under $1,000.00.

The EVOLT E-500 is priced at $799.99 (with a bundled 14-45mm f3.5/5.6 Zuiko Digital Zoom Lens). A two-lens combo (with 14-45mm f3.5/5.6 and 40-150mm f3.5/4.5 Zuiko Digital Zoom Lens) is available for $899.99. More info available on Olympus' website.
