nokia_5500_1.jpgThe powers of be at Nokia have just announced a new phone the Nokia 5500, which has been tagged as a “sports phone with a six-pack”. So basically the phone is all set to overshadow the competition with its highly stylized form factor and its rugged sporty looks. The phone also boasts of a highly intuitive interface and a unique three mode system including, a phone mode to chit chat , a music mode to groove, and a sports mode to keep you fit and healthy. The inimitable sport mode lets you flex those muscles and keeps a check on your workouts (or lack of workouts in my case). The Nokia 5500 has been designed for the today generation who work hard and party harder. Thus if you want to be the talk of the time just check this baby out. The phone would be available during the summer (3rd quarter) of 2006 with a suggested price of 300 Euros.

  • "The Nokia 5500 Sport combines the passion and spirit of sports with the latest in mobile communications. It's an ideal companion for an active, urban lifestyle," says Heikki Norta, Senior Vice President, Mobile Phones, Nokia. "There is a very sizeable audience of consumers who demand sport-inspired products, even if they are not professional athletes themselves. The Nokia 5500 Sport offers these consumers a mobile phone suited to their specific needs - during a jog in the park, a day at the beach and even that dress-to-impress first date."

I don't go to the gym and I don't jog, run, power-walk, or play racquetball. But I know someone who does. We all know someone like that, and God, they are annoying. They get up earlier than we do, carry around bottles of sports drink with them, and wear special types of clothing. Every single thing they purchase has to do with enhancing their physical fitness. If you are one of those people, I have just the thing for you.

Nokia just announced their Nokia 5500 Sport, a cell phone for fitness buffs that is scheduled to be released during the summer of 2006. Expected to retail for around 300 Euros (or about US$385), it's certainly a lot more feature-rich than my nine year old Nokia that I paid $19.95 for. The 5500 Sport is packed with technology designed especially for active people unlike myself, and is durable enough to hold up under a serious workout. The phone has one button that activates three modes: phone mode, music mode, and sports mode. Also included is text-to-speech technology, so messages can be read out loud to you while you keep jogging down that track. In sports mode, it features a pedometer which helps you monitor how long you have walked and how many calories you have burned. In music mode, the 5500 Sport supports multiple music formats, and can hold memory cards of up to 1Gb, so it can hold up to about 750 songs.

The design is sleek and well, sporty looking, and it's built to take rough treatment. It has a stainless steel casing, splash- and dust-resistant shell, and rubber grips. Nokia reports that some of the materials used in engineering the 5500 Sport are the same materials used in high-performance running shoes. This one is designed to hold up under the rigors of a harsh workout--a one of a kind offering, and no doubt the beginning of a new trend.
