NAVTEQ and Delphi team up for the NAV200
NAVTEQ, a leading global provider of digital maps, is teaming up with Delphi to create the NAV 200, a portable navigation device.
NAVTEQ provides the map data for the preloaded 1.5 GB SD card, which contains maps of the United States and Canada. The preloaded map is also programmed with over 1.5 million Points of Interest (POIs) including restaurants, gas stations, and ATMs. It is also loaded with over two hundred attributes, such as access restrictions, one-way streets, and speed limits.
The Delphi NAV200 is ready to go, out of the box, without any computer downloading or synchronization required. High Sensitivity SiRF and GPS antenna insure that it knows where you are, and the powerful processor will calculate the fastest route there. It will even tell you where to go with the voice-guided instructions from the built-in speakers, which means you don’t even have to look at the device once it’s on. You just go where it tells you to. Of course, this can be a good thing and a bad thing.
The device has a 3.5 inch touchscreen, and is capable of more than just navigation. It features an MP3 player for downloaded music, so you can sing as you are driving. It also has a world clock for timing needs, and a calculator for those times where you can’t do all the math in your head (for example, in a drive-thru).
It also has a number of excellent features for the passenger as well. For example, it is set with a movie player, which is an excellent distraction for the younger passengers. It is also handy for viewing photos, and playing games.
Another feature is the subscription-based Traffic Monitoring Channel (TMC) that provides navigation system with traffic information. With an optional adaptor, you can receive immediate traffic information so you can adjust your route accordingly.
All of this comes from a device that is hardly bigger than your hand, and includes a built-in rechargeable battery. The Delphi NAV200 is available to preorder at an MSRP of about $400 USD.
