A/V Dock for iPod A/V Remote for iPod

KeySpan, a maker of remote controls for the PC and the Mac, ventures into iPod territory with two new products: the A/V Dock for iPod and the A/V Remote for iPod. Both products can be found on display at the Macworld Expo. The feature-packed dock and remote for the iPod provide a simple and convenient way to enjoy iPod music, photos, or videos on a stereo or TV.

With the A/V Dock, you can:

  • Connect the iPod to a PC or Mac in order to sync or charge the iPod

  • Connect the iPod to a stereo or powered speakers using the line out jack

  • Connect the iPod to a TV using the S-Video jack

  • Charge the iPod from an AC outlet using the USB Power Adapter

  • Control the iPod from around the house with the optional A/V Remote
  • The A/V Dock is Apple's "universal dock" compliant. What this means is, you can use the dock with any iPod - regular, click-wheel, mini, nano, and yet to be launched ones. It makes a lot of sense to go in for such a design.

The A/V Remote is to be used in conjunction with the A/V Dock to wirelessly control the iPod. A significant design consideration has been the use of Radio Frequency (RF) instead of the usual Infra-Red (IR). That's good news because you no longer have walls coming in between you and your iPod. The remote has 16 functions programmed into it - a big leap over competing products. The A/V Dock for iPod has a MSRP of $49, while the A/V Remote for iPod has a MSRP of $29. At this price it's competing with other solutions such as the DLO Home Dock (lesser features but priced at $99). Both products will be available in two colors - black and white and are expected to be released sometime in February. Because the remote is useless without the dock, it would be great if KeySpan offers the two in a specially priced bundle.
