Honda ASIMO Humanoid Robot Sprints to Its North American Debut at Consumer Electronics Show
This year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas has been attended by both humans and robots. Honda brought with them their famous humanoid robot ASIMO, which made made its North American debut at the show.
The newest model of Honda's ASIMO robot is even more human-like than its predecessors.
The lastest ASIMO Humanoid Robot incorporates a few new technological advancements, including a new streamlined design, more fluid and quick movements, and the ability to actually run at about 4mph. It also has some new mobility and artificial intelligence capabilities for enhanced human interaction.
The primary advancements of the latest Honda ASIMO Humanoid Robot includes: enhanced human interaction, carrying objects using a cart, and running. The ASIMO now has the ability to recognize surrounding environments through the use of visual sensors, a floor surface sensor, ultrasonic sensor, and an IC Tele-interaction Communication Card. The ASIMO can give and receive objects (such as a tray) with the use of its eye cameras and force sensors on its wrists. The robot can also hold a person's hand, and move in sync with them. Another new task that the robot can successfully complete is handling a cart. The robot can easily move the cart, slow down, and change directions.
The most talked about new feature of the ASIMO robot is its ability to run. Up until now, robots have only been able to walk. Previous versions of Honda's ASIMO robot were able to walk forwards and backwards, climb stairs, turn smoothly without pausing, and maintain their balance even on uneven surfaces and slopes.
Honda first began developing a humanoid robot in 1986 with the purpose of it someday helping people in need. Finally, in 2002, the ASIMO robot made its North American debut, after years of research and development. Since then, Honda has been continuing their research and development to further perfect and advance the humanoid robot.
