Hitachi Global Storage Technologies announced today the industry's first terabyte (TB) harddrive, which will revolutionize consumers' ability to store videos, music, photos and other valuable data. Hitachi is releasing two versions of the terabyte harddrives - the Deskstar 7K1000 and the CinemaStar 7K1000.

The Deskstar 7K1000 is suitable for gaming and high-performance PC's, external storage devices, and upgrade applications. Features include:

  • SATA 3.0Gb/s and PATA-133 interfaces
  • Ramp load design for increased shock protection
  • Three low-power idle modes to boost power efficiency

The CinemaStar 7K1000 is designed for use with DVR applications, and features:

  • Adaptive error recovery and SMART command transport for optimized video streaming and picture quality
  • Smooth Stream Technology to optimize the drive for audio/video applications requiring reliable storage
  • "Bedroom quiet" acoustics

Think a terabyte harddrive is out of your price range? Think again, both the Deskstar and CinemaStar will be available at the consumer-friendly price of $399 USD. The Deskstar will be available in a 750GB version, as well as the terabyte version, and will be released in Q1 of 2007. The CinemaStar will be available only in the terabyte size, and will be released in the second quarter of 2007. An enterprise of the terabyte harddrive designed for lower duty-cycle, high capacity enterprice environments is presently being evaluated by at major OEM customers and is expected to be available in Q2.

Hitachi has released detailed specifications for the Deskstar, as seen below. Specs for the CinemaStar will be revealed in Q2 when the product is releases.
