Garmin GMR 41 & Garmin GMR 21: Marine Radar Units
Own a boat? Well, who doesn't nowadays? But then, without a powerful navigation system that's not really useful. Which is why Garmin has just launched two new marine radars in its popular GMR series: the Garmin GMR 21 and Garmin GMR 41.
Both the Garmin GMR 21 and Garmin GMR 41 are 24" diameter digital marine radar scanners compatible with the Garmin Marine Network. The advantage of these devices is that captured radar data is processed digitally within the radome itself (thanks to a DSP). This information can then be set up for presentation on a Garmin GPSMAP 3000 chartplotter.
Utilizing DSP significantly enhances radar echoes while filtering out unwanted extraneous data. The Garmin GMR21 and GMR41 are clearly successors to the GMR 20 and 40 radar scanners.
Both scanners employ a convex antenna design to give the radome a narrower beam width, and lower physical profile. Horizontal beamwidth is rated at 3.6° and 25° vertical. The 'Garmin 21 is a 2 kilowatt radome with 24 nm (nautical mile) range, while the 'Garmin 41 is the big one - a 4kW radome and 36 nm range.
Available controls on the devices include sensitivity, tuning, gain, sea/rain clutter among others. As many as 10 targets can be tracked, with reference to their bearing, course and speed. Check out the extended entry for detailed specs.
Targeted for a May 2006 release, the Garmin GMR 21 has a retail price of US $1,799.99, while the Garmin GMR 41 costs $2,199.99. Access Garmin's website for details.
