OQO 02 Ultra Mobile PC: First in the World With Integrated Mobile Broadband Service Powered by Sprint

OQO has officially announced their latest ultra mobile PC: OQO 02 Model. The device weighs little more than one pound, and is the smallest Windows Vista capable PC. Two years ago, OQO introduced the world to the first model of the UMPC, the Model 01+. While two years is a bit of a wait in the tech world, it seems to have been worth it.

OQO Model 02 is up to four times faster and six times brighter than its predecessor. It also features a new ergonomic backlit keyboard and capacitive TouchScrollers for easy input and navigation. For complete wireless connectivity, the OQO 2 UMPC also features EV-DO wireless WAN, WiFi, and Bluetooth.

The base model OQO 02 starts at $1,499, but the device can be customized to suit any organization or individual user, which could bring the price up higher. The base model 02 comes with a 1.5GHz processor, 60GB hard drive, 1GB RAM, and integrated mobile broadband capability.

The OQO 02 is the first computer in the UMPC Pro category, which was attained by incorporating enterprise class features and functionality into this pocketable ultra mobile device. This is a great device for casual users, but is made with professional business users in mind.

The device can be ordered immediately at OQO's online store, or by calling 877-676-6688. They expect to begin shipping by the end of Q1 2007.

    Sprint Treo 750w Mobile Phone?

Ah, rumors. Who can separate the truth from the fiction? And who wants to?

Take this recent tidbit over heard on Treocentral forums. Apparently, Sprint plans to offer the new Treo 750w for about $499.99, but with a $200.00 rebate. At least, that’s what it says on this ad from CompUSA.

Apparently, this ad has created quite a stir because it specifies that it uses EDGE/EVDO technology. However, Sprint has all their phones available on the EDGE network. Unless they made some EVDO switch we don’t know about, then it might be a mistake.

Well, hopefully the other features aren’t a misprint, like the 1.3 megapixel camera and Windows Mobile OS 5.

Time will tell if these rumors will be true.

    WiMAX Mobile Phones

    wimax-diagram.gif
Nokia today announced, at the WiMAX conference in Boston, that they are beginning their work on WiMAX ((802.16e) enabled mobile devices. Joining other hardware makers in the decision, Nokia plans to have super high speed base stations starting at 2.5 GHz band by 2007 and up to 3.5 GHz bandwidth by 2008. Nokia mobile devices are also expected to be available in 2008.

Nokia Flexi WiMAX Base Stations will be compact in size, power consumption, and physical effort as far as installing and running the WiMAX networks. Modularity will allow for easy capacity upgrades with traffic increase, rolling in; the 4G era.

Nokia’s announcement comes right on time, as Intel also just introduced their system-on-a-chip (SoC) WiMAX Connection 2250. Installed in a mobile radio that includes a broadband modem, the SoC enables high-speed broadband handsets to connect to both fixed WiMAX networks, and mobile ones like those enabled by Nokia's new Flexi base station model. Intel says its 2250 SoC is capable of handling a discrete WiMAX channel of up to 10 MHz bandwidth. With spectral efficiency at 1.9 bps per hertz, and you have a the theoretical maximum throughput approaches a whopping 19 Mbps. Intel SoC chips will very likely be powering Nokia WiMAX handsets.

Sprint will be using the same frequency for its WiMax deployment, by late 2007, which leads to the conclusion- that partnership is inevitable-between the two already amicable companies. The WiMAX IEEE 802.16e version is expected to be standardized later this year.

    Sprint Offers Users Pay-Per-View movies

    buk_entry_logo.gif

In December 2005, Sprint introduced mSpot Movies, and became the first wireless carrier in the United States to offer full-length movies on mobile devices like cell phones. Now, they have taken the next step in mobile movie entertainment and offer Sprint Movies, the very first “pay-per-view” service in the United States.

Sprint Movies cost about $3.99-5.99, and work like a rental DVD. That is, you can only watch them for a certain period from 24 hours to a week. Another similar DVD feature is the ability to pause and chapter selection. It is also possible to stop and continue at a later time, at the exact place where the film was stopped.

Sprint will still offer mSpot, a continuous service with a monthly subscription fee of $6.95. Unlike Sprint Movies, which offers a pay-per-view service, mSpot offers access to unlimited movies, television shows, and concerts. MSpot was a huge seller and increased Sprint’s service.

If you’re like me, you may not like seeing something that was meant for the big screen played on something less than a thousand times its size. Maybe I would be willing to watch some romance, but some big action film I would insist on at least a 19 inch screen. However, the benefits of downloading onto your phone are obvious, especially if you have kids. Putting in the latest Disney movie might be the only way to keep them quiet on a long trip.

Disney and Buena Vista have many titles to choose from including Herbie: Fully Loaded, National Treasure, and Glory Road. Sony also has a few, including the blockbuster Spider-Man 2. Universal has the most titles available, including classics like Babe, The Fast and the Furious, Jaws, Meet The Parents, even Scarface. Keep in mind that watching these movies will be like being on an airplane, because they are often edited for TV14 content.

I’m sort of wondering why Sprint offered this new pay-per-view service. It seems it would be cheaper to have mSpot, with unlimited viewings for $6.95. Continual “rentals” from Sprint Movies could get really expensive in a hurry.

Sprint PPC 6700 Pocket PC Phone Reviewed

    sprint-6700-westfall.jpg
Get this Phone Now for the
    Best Price on the Internet!

Pocket PC Thoughts have just reviewed Sprint' PPC 6700 Pocket PC Phone Edition and was quite taken aback by the design and the compact size. To them the Sprint phone is a winner as it packs a whole lot of features without compromising on the design. Some of the features appreciated include a usable keyboard, user friendly key layout, and a very readable and clear screen.

The 6700 like all phones is not perfect and comes with its baggage. According to some users, it is prone to freezing up and consumes a lot of battery especially when the radio is used. However, the sleek design, intuitive interface and the CDMA support, more than make up for its flaws.

The Sprint PPC6700 Pocket PC Phone Edition may be small in design but is extremely big in features. It runs on Windows Mobile 5.0 Software and has EV-DO built in, thus it can support Sprint Mobile Broadband. It features a 416 MHz Intel® processor and includes a mega pixel camera and camcorder. Some other features found on the phone include; Bluetooth® and Wi-Fi data capabilities, a sliding QWERTY keyboard, Action Info™ for access to your favorite brands: eBay®, Amazon.com®,etc, Built in speakers and E-mail.
